PES4.exe crashes to desktop (plus weird things happening in game)

Hi everyone. First of all:

Athlon XP 2800+
Asus A7V8X-X Mobo
1024MB RAM
nVidia GeForce 5600FX
100GB Maxtor IDE HD
Microsoft Sidewinder USB Game Pad (may be an important factor)
XP Pro SP2
Most recent updates for XP, most recent drivers for graphics card and DirectX 9.0c.

Right, I had been playing Pro Evo (1.1 with Wolf patches) using my pad with no problems for a few months when in one match after about 30 mins (on the clock) some strange things started happening, which then started happening all the time - difficult to describe, appeared to be a graphics card problem - the ball jerking forwards repeatedly like a graphics loop, tackles and shots causing instant corners, goal kicks, goals and most frequently own goals from anywhere on the pitch, with the ball just disappearing and the camera focussing on the unfortunate own goal scorer, sometimes the net bulging way into the stands and staying like that, all replays show the ball spinning in the air, miles away from the players, with black sky, sometimes there are no players at all (in the replays). Other times the game would just crash to the desktop with "PES4.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close.".
I have tried many, many reinstalls of PES, using the 1.0 version of the exe, using the 1.0 no-cd crack, the same for 1.1, using the Wolf patch, not using the Wolf patch....
I have read in this forum that PES "doesn't like joysticks/gamepads" but it was working for quite a while with my pad. Also, I didn't change anything (that I know of) between the game working perfectly and it not working at all really (sometimes I will get a full match played, sometimes it goes weird or crashes after 15 mins on the clock (10 minute matches). Sorry for the loooooooooong post, trying to give you as much information as possible.
Any suggestions much appreciated.
Thanks
Tom

hmm, since you did reinstall the game, i think the problem lies elsewhere...
did you install anything new? new drivers? new hardware... maybe just before the crashing started you changed some settings?...

do you have problems with other games? gfx glitches?

you might wonna clean the registry after a uninstall and delete everything that has to do with PES4, and then reinstall.

Hi guys, thanks for your replies. I don't have any other problems with anything, including other games, the gfx card is only about 3 months old as well so I hope there's nothing wrong with it. I played a full game using the keyboard with no controller plugged in today, but I also played a full game with the controller a bit later! It's just so random! One other thing about PES is that there seems to be a sound delay, sometimes very slight, sometimes quite large, I've seen threads related to that around here so I'll check them out now. Could the gfx (or the sound) probs be related to hardware acceleration?

Maybe I could upload some weird replays. How do you convert the "FILES" (no extension) to a playable video file??

you save the replay using a software program named taksi. with another software program named virtualdub you compress the vid. and you can upload it the rapidshare.de or softlab. in case of problems with compressing you can private message me

Cheers Soliloquay. A development on the graphics prob: When I run dxdiag it loads for a while then says:
"DXDiag has detected that there may have been a problem accessing DirectShow the last time the program was used. Would you like to bypass DirectShow this time?"
If I click "No", I get:
dxdiag.exe - Application error
The instruction at "0x014c3397" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not be "written". (OK to terminate, Cancel to debug.)
This happens every time I run dxdiag. Any ideas what it means?
I tried reinstalling DirectX 9.0c using the redistributable download, but it when you click next to start the installation it instantly says all components have been installed successfully without doing anything.
