Love to hate it !

I have been trying to beat it at 3* starting from Default Players and getting kicked in the teeth a lot of times... I know that from 2* to 3* is a huge difficulty jump in the gameplay but.. The computer just doesn't play fair.. A lot of times the fouls are awarded in favour of the comp player... REALLY FRUSTRATING..

Stupid way to increase the level of difficulty.. I've read somewhere else that this seems to be true of the higher * levels too.. The comp just cheats and plays unfair ..

See this tackle at the edge of the box.. No Free kick was awarded to me ..The comp just left me fuming.. http://in.geocities.com/kingsrook14/pes4/FoulPlaySmall.avi

Has anyone else felt the same ???

I am playing on PC.. PES4 is the first of the series for me... Was lost in the useless land of FIFA before.. Love everything else abt PES4 ... But using the keyboard and doing the R2, R1 tricks is getting my fingers tangled.. I've won the cup in 3* but with the help of one or two improved stats players or with match mode players.. Starting from Default team is tough so far.. Anyway, may move on to 4* soon..

No, and I find it strange that you have difficulties with 3*, since the game isn't that hard. Haven't you played other games in the PES series?

When you start on a higher difficulty level, play with a great team against weak teams and as you improve, you can make it harder.
Play as France or Brazil against China or Iran and see how you do.

lots of people here have been playing the PES series for ages, I only really got into it during the end of PES2 just before PES3 came out.

Yes the computer definitely does cheat at times, you can have the upper hand in a game have %60 possession, 10 shots on goal and in injury time of the second half they'll score the equaliser or win the match from the most rediculous of opportunities, it happens loads!

I alos used to be very confident in my skills on PES2, but moving to 3 humbled me, and 4 humbled me yet again, I appreciate the game has moved on and different tactics are needed, but when I first started with PES4 on ML, I couldn't win anything! frustrating 0-0 or 1-1 scorelines made me go crazy, but eventually Freddie Ljunberg came up on free transfer and all was good :)

Persevere, that's the key, and get a USB PS2 pad convertor!

Might be down to the ref being used. They all have differing values of strictness. Anyone know a good and fair ref?

The last minute equaliser thing

YEAH ! that last minute equaliser is what I dread most !! Happened to me loads of times.. Especially when the comp needs a goal and presses hard I find the refree is more biased.. Or this could be my cooked up imagination coz I am loosing :-D Several times my shots have hit the post while my defenders played stupid and ran away ! I have not yet caught this on fraps but will soon if I loose in the same manner..

By now have got the hang of it... Have to beat the silly-con at his own game ;-) So I attack very hard and get the goal ... Then on try not to loose possesion..
This maybe like actual soccer game.. But fairness should have been too like reality.
Another thing is that sliding tackle coming from front does not result in fouls most of the time..
Anyway, reached the Campions League on 3* ... So far so good

sometimes, when u are the away team, the ref seems to be more favour the home team...

i've been playing since the PES3.. i quite difficult at first but you'll notice the AI isn't that smart after all.. get the right tactics and the AI will be having a hard time.. i play at 6* / 5 minutes and sometimescan pull off a 4-0 win with man city ;>

The computer is just relentless, especially with 5/6 stars, but all you have to do is go easy with the dash (we all can't help it sometimes) and BECAREFUL of your own centre backs, they tend to run out and do the wing back's job and leave a massive hole in the defence. The computer likes to exersize it's arial through-balls too, so if the com disposseses your strikers/midfielders at their end of the pitch, they would normally through ball for a counter attack, so once again - what what your defenders are doing as they normally advance up the field to support the attack leaving the goalie exposed. Try to switch to a wing back or a near by midfielder to pressurise your possessing player, the COM should move your key defenders back to where they should be. You'll let in far less goals.

So far, I have found that it's much harder to score via set peices/crosses in PES 4. Headers would often go over the bar, even with a 1 on 1 with keeper. The first day of playing PES 4 I would have 5-6 set peices/crosses in a 10 minute game vs com and with a friend, and none of them could be converted to goals. While I could score 1-2 goals in PES 3. Occasionally, one of my players would drive the ball downwards at point-blank range with the goal ( I suppose the trick is to strike the ball at a lower trajectory).

I found that an organised centre-attack works best against the com. I can get plenty of goal attempts under 5/6 stars with rational short passing. Arial through-ball works if 1-2 of the com's defenders have moved far up the field.

All this stuff works at the hardest com levels, so it should work on 3 stars.

i just find the game frustrating at all levels.

* your centre half is in possession and you press to pass the nearest full back. For some reason, he will end attempting to pass it 50 yards up the field to your centre forward.

* the computer has posession of the ball, you chase him with one of your players, just as you are about to press O to tackle, your player changes and you don't make the tackle.

* the computer has posession. you are pressing L1 to change to the closest player to the ball. But no matter how many times you press L1 it doesn't change to the one you want it to be. - by the time it's changed to the one you want, the computer has already advanced 10 yards.

These are 3 i can think that i hate :D

The beautiful game
Life isn't fair .. Live with it ! i reckon the decisons even itself out the more you play the game, but thats wat makes the game better knowing the ref may/may not give you the decisons.
