PES4 online and fully licenced? Interview with Seabass

Shingo 'Seabass' Takatsuka is the eccentric producer of the legendary Pro Evolution Soccer series for Konami's TYO studio based in Tokyo. We gained exclusive access to the great man to ask about PES3 on PC, his plans for an online PES and the future of the definitive arcade footie franchise.

PCZone: How difficult was it to bring PES to the PC?

Takatsuka: It was quiet difficult to convert because Konami didnt have the PC technology background in the past- so to even reproduce the same game as the PS2 was tricky. We decided to bring it to PC because we wanted to go multi-platform. Also, there are a lot of merits to the PC platform- the network on the PC is more established and stronger, so we can experiment more to achieve our dream of being an online football title. Unfortunatly, this version doesnt have LAN or online play; were just trying to experiment. But since were thinking of having a game server and going online, this PC area is very much a key to our future plans.

PCZ: Can we expect PES4 to have online compatibility?

Takatsuka: Id love to announce online for next year- and its coming closer. In fact, PES could be online on the PC before the PS2 version.

PCZ: What was the thinking behind the new shooting system in PES3? It now seems harder to squeeze off a shot, particulary if your under pressure from a defender..

Takatsuka: The ball movement- the physical movement of the football- has been experimented with. This means that as in real football, when you shoot at the right time, you can have a very low and fast drive shot- similair to what Paul Scholes does for England.

PCZ: Finally, will PES4 have completely fully-licensed teams?

Takatsuka: Yes, were hoping. We can tell you that it wont get worse! Were already aquiring more licenses for this game and the teams personal dream is to have PES fully-licensed. Its not the R&D side, but the political company side. The future is bright for us in that area.

Sounds promising, pity they didn't ask if the commentary was being overhauled.

You'd think if they (konami) do look at forums like this one they'd get the hint

did they say anything about more teams? playin a full season with 20 licensed premiership teams would definately wipe the floor with fifa. And for christ sake get anybody else to do the commentary. Peter Twatley's voice is wreckin my head

I especially liked, in reference to licencing....

"it won't get worse".

Classic comedy....how could it get any worse.

Jasper, they haven't even started making the damn thing yet so how can they confirm anything??
Let them finish with WE7:I first and then we should be able to expect definite confirmations in the summertime.

Steady on Zyg ;)

Well the gamepaly is pretty much perfect apart from a few little tweeks that could be done here an their so i think Konami should concentrate fully on the look of the game

I'm with ya Giggsy!

Graphics needs to be improved (apart from licences), some rulings and to get bloody game ONLINE so we can jam and slam day and night in the tournaments.

I can't even imagine how much this game is going to be played online. CS doesn't have a chance :)

Good work Zyg.

Cheers Mates.

I'm sure you'll get the broadband 'til then. It's getting really cheap.

Well, I'm huge ManUtd fan so they better get those licenses soon so we can stop patching the game in regard to licensing.

Tiscali broadband is now available at the same price as I pay for my AOL... £15.99 a month.

its not the fastest broadband, only 3 times faster, but its still an improvement and certainly a price breakthrough. if instalation is free i may look into it, but im unsure about going with an unknown company. i like to stick with the big ones normally. (no jokes please)

great news about pes4 though. licencing will be great but i hope this doesnt mean the end of the player edit feature!! im sure it wont be, but the thought did cross my mind.

dunno where id be without it! i love putting myself on the game, usually one of the first things i do. its funny when me and my dad play, hes italy and im brazil, and he plays for italy :D fat man running round with a receeding hairline. v funny.

sorry, got a bit carried away here. :D looking forward to the first hints of whats going to be in the game.

peace :D

he did say he had hopes for a fully licenced pes4...

dont think he'd say that unless he was 95% sure. it would be a disaster for them if they said that and it didnt happen.
