I cant master defending in PES5! I am constantly giving away fouls! the method that i have always used for the past couple of serie's is to hold :R1: and move the d-pad towards my own goal whilst holding :square: to make a computer controlled team mate to tackle and pressure the player on the ball while i control a player to try to cut out possible passes but in this game it just doesn't work! 9 times out of 10 my computer controlled player gets outpaced and he gives away free kicks and if the ball does get played through i just cant get it and most of the time my defenders take horrible touches that put the team into even more danger! Any advice or tips plz?

well theres ur problem..relying on the computer to do the hard work......my theiry is that the AI gets dumber as the stars get higher......what i do its hold :r1: to chase the bastard down...and when i get close tap :x: ...if i get ahead of him i try :circle: and 7/10 times i tackle him and succesfully stop the play and regain possesion

DO NOT I REPEAT DO NOT USE OLD DEFENDING TACTICS ON PES5
you cannot use that X tactic as it will cause a foul.
Be patient, chase him down, get in front, slide into the ball and you should have the ball in your possesion. holding square might help but i dont use it much

Wy manually run behind an opponent and leave the tackle part to the auto press??? It should be the other way around!

I assume you play on manual cursor, right? Press L1 again and try to at least stop the opponent from running and forcing him to pass or dribble. If your player running from behind reaches his target, press L1 again and tackle.

semi auto is the best, more manual then full auto
so if your not fully concentrating it helps you a bit

Defending on PES 5 totally sucks as in the past PES series. How the heck can you chase the guy without being passed and how can you rob the damn ball off his feet without crappy rebounds? I play against humans regularly...

That's how to do it. The only thing I would add is make sure you time your sliding tackles to perfection.

Damn, the game is sooooooooooooooo real!!! I was given those exact instructions when taking to the field as a kid...

Wasn't there a bad foul you could do awhile back on FIFA where you pressed 2 buttons together and go in groin high, do you think this would be handy to have whilst defending against tricky wingers??

Nice to see guys;)

Don't you think that everyone should approach this installment as they would a different title???

So many people keep comparing 5 to 4 which is thier downfall straight away.
Almost every aspect has changed on the pitch, the style movement of players etc.
People should approach PES5 with an open mind and stop comparing it to it's predecessors.;)

Yea it was the "Intentional Foul" button, think it may have been L1. I would love this button on Pro so I can just sythe someone down when I get annoyed...

I do get frustrated a wee bit on the game and I am generally quite conservative in the tackle but I would use this tackle quite a bit I think if it was added and if it was added it would make it more realistic surely this new show boating thing has been added we need some new defensive fouls added also.

I tend to slide-tackle a player off the ball if I'm ever that steamed up!!!

Hi all,
* Defending in PES5 requires aiming to the ball and avoiding body collision from behind or the sides. Pressing with x or [] is all about body contact and it should be a last resort. I use pressing to force opponents into changing directions or making passes. I let go of press [] & x just before there is body contact. If you're going to bump into someone, make sure you are pressing R1+R2, anticipate and aim to the direction of the ball.

* Sliding actualy works this time in PES5.

* If your opponent is dribbling towards your goal and your player is running behind him tap L1 and have someone from defence slow opponent down until your mate running from behind (by pressing [])catches up.
When your mate is close to body contact with the opponent tap L1 again and get infront of him. Now you have two players going for the tackle.

R1 is for speed but player becomes lighter and unable to make proper body contact and can be pushed away easily. If you are playing against someone holding x or [] then it will be a nasty match full of fouls and your running players might get an injury. However a simple tip to your opponent that a R1+R2 run towards the portion of the pitch that the ball is heading to makes for a legal tackle with stealing the ball will force you to stop running with R1 and start thinking about how this game is played.

example: My defender is running from top to bottom to tackle an opponent running from left to right. I pressesd down while holding R1 & R2 and my defender first barged with his shoulder and sent the opponent flying, and then took the ball. Have he pressed R2 at that moment then surely the foul will be on me. My friend hated me & the game after he wittnessed that! lol

R2 almost guarantees steeling the ball if it is between you and opponent and protects you from shoulder barges (shoulder barge R1+R2).

In essence, I'd just like to concur with the views expressed by several others already. Manually chasing down until you're in front enough for a slide or X tackle is the best way to deal with it, and placing less emphasis on ball-chasing.

However, sometimes using the square button to get a computer player to tackle the attacker (while you cover a failed tackle and/or the run) can sometimes work. Just don't hold it down continually. Be careful and make sure that the computer isn't going to run in from behind.
