Not meant as bragging but I think I've now owned nearly all of the 50 - 100 top players for at least some matches to get known to them (with the cost of about 25 mio transfer fees by now) and I went back to buy only just 1 player on a position with a rating between 80 to 90. The rest is just talents or solid players.
Midfield-wise I can recommend Ireland very much, so versatile in midfield with free roaming and several other cards - price tag around 2,5 mio currently.
My defence currently consists of Lahm, Chivu, De Jong and Wright Philips as offensive rightback. I had Pique, Lucio, Dani Alves and Maicon once together but I found it all a bit too easy to play tbh, as a allround sub I can recommend Ibrahim Toraman, can play all positions @ the back + def midfield -> 2 mio
Attacking... well attack is hard to judge what one needs as there are so many nice and cheap ways to play attack. Generally I tend to get me more versatile players with high technique and good passing too. Accuracy of 70 to 80 is just enough for me skillz. Don't wanna give any specific names but the ones with a Joker card which improves the subs stats are always in my closer choice when I rearrange my roster.

Depends all on your play style... Cole is a professional LB with attacking qualities too, had him at least 200 games and were never disappointed, seldom injuries because of B... Vargas is more midfield/attack. Both are restricted to the left... minus...
Bosingwa has no cards but good stats, yeah... but sold him quite quickly again, wanted sth else. J. Zanetti was rock solid, especially in defence as man marking is no problem for him, very robust in close encounters. He also has the big plus of being able of CMF!
So I recommend Cole and Zanetti. But expect Cole to take any chance to go forward but as Vargas is at least equally offensive without the defence aspect, go with Cole

Depends what your budget is.
I mean there's the obvious names like Gerrard but they will probably be too expensive.
I had Bouba Diop for about 100 games and he was pretty decent at long shots. Very hard shot power and 75 & 80 for shot accuracy and technique.
