Playing PES for the first time in my life - have a bunch of questions

Hey all, figured you guys might be able to help me as I seem to be doing really badly.

I'm playing ML, using the default ML team as Real Madrid on Regular difficulty. I cannot for the life of me score properly. If I do score it always seem to be an accident (bounce of a defender, or a lucky position of another forward to get the rebound on a deflection). I feel like there are some basics I'm missing, and the tutorial isnt very good.

1. I've had this happen to me a few times already, the opposite forward scores a goal from like 5 meters outside the box. If I ever try shooting from that far away it never gets anywhere close to the goal area.

2. I've seen people talking about "Marking" and the R2 button (which doesnt seem to be doing anything over here). What is this marking thing, and what is R2 used for?

3. Are there any video tutorials that explain how the game should be played to some success?

4. I manage to do ok on Amateur difficulty by constantly using through balls and running right in front of the goalie to score (they rarely go out of the goal area on Amateur difficulty). Is there a trick to using through balls? on Regular difficulty I never manage to get them in properly.

5. Looking at my Game Plan I can see colorful arrows next to each of my players, what does that mean?

6. When going for headers, the AI sometimes pushes my player, how do I do that?

7. At top levels, do feints actually help? I never bothered learning them up until now.

Thanks a bunch for all the help.

Go into the training mode and touch up on your shooting skills there, you can even play full practice matches hope that helps..

I've tried playing some training mode, and since I picked up pes I've got like 50+ games done. I feel theres something basic I'm missing.

1.)Happens to mee to . It just needs timing and a bit of skill. By timing I mean when you are running and you strike the ball, it will usually be more powerful but when you are standing still less powerfull.(Tap very gently for low shots)
When you are running hold down RT for xbox or R2 for ps3. I really dont know the controlled shot button for PC...
2.) R2 is used for Changing the view to where the ball is so maybe you dont have to go that far or see if your teammates need help for defending . But for attacking it is the controlled shot...
3.) Maybe check youtube ? Im sure you will find something there...
4.) Try 1-2 passing to lure out the defenders to you and when there is space play the through ball.
5.) I think the arrows are where they will move to according to the formation . Or It could be their form Im not quite sure !.
6.) Im not quite sure but you can dive by cLicking the two anaLog stick down :D..
7.) Feints do help I like the roll over and quickly turn the other way its great when there is like 2 players around you...
I hope I helped!

Thanks for the help!

Could you elaborate on the controlled shot you mentioned? how does it work exactly?

Make sure you press R2 after pressing the shot button to produce a finesse shot. R2 can also be used for close control, this helps when controlling a ball and in many other instances. here is a thread I made which should help for dribbling, holding off defenders and controlling the ball.

http://forums.evo-web.co.uk/showthread.php?t=61162

The arrows are form arrows, red up being the highest and pale blue down the lowest, these have an effect on stats and performances. Shooting is dictated by body position and other variables such as angle of approach, distance from ball etc, not just a case of pointing analog in desired direction. You have to time tackles don't just hold down the pressure button, use the analog to get in front of players and muscle them of the ball,, R2 close control also help when pushing players off the ball. This game takes a long time to get used to, lots of controls to learn but worth it in the end.

I'm sorry I'm still unsure as to what you mean.

You can select what players you want to mark on the opposing team when you are at the game plan menu, not hard to find. For example if you are Manchester United and your playing Chelsea, you could select vidic to man mark Drogba, have a play around with the settings you will figure it out.

Oh, marking players on the OTHER team. Yeah, that makes a lot more sense. :)

One final question I had, I noticed you can link feints but I cant seem to find out how to perform them in-game. I've chosen feints for each of the R stick directions but using those directions on the R stick while playing doesnt do anything. Is there anything else I should be doing for it to work?

Dont really use the feints and skills very often still not looked at it in much depth. On another similar topic you can do a nice looking and effective feint by pressing the shot button and then the pass button very quickly, your player will go to shoot and then knock the ball to the side which throws the defender of balance, this move has been in the game for ages buts its sill an effective way of getting past defenders in tight spaces. Not really looked at the tricks but sure someone in here will know.

Hold L1 and press up, down, left, or right on the right analog stick to do the link feint. I found the preset ones are especially useful, and I love using preset #2 because it has a neat flip flap link feint.

Sorry but im randomly promoting my videos, despite them being played on top player they might give you an idea on how to play, Heres the link to the first then theres a few games ive played in ML on my channel.

My only other real advice is pass and learn how to do it well not even through balls just passing and keeping the ball then move forward and keep passing looking for space using R1 for the player to run on after the pass and look to thread through balls, be careful pressing R1 with defenders.

I wouldn't worry about marking so much just learn how to tackle and you'll be fine. Defending, just try and get behind the ball and keep an eye out for players moving ahead of the ai player with the ball look to cut them out in the even of a pass.

Link fients are a bit more advance but only use basic ones that get you past one player like running stepovers or elasticos for example again its about timing just like shooting.

here the link to the first video, the rest are on my channel hope it helps: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gJ9Rrqfsy_Q

Nice, that video sure helps a lot. I noticed that while attacking you often use a 'high through ball', that jumps over the heads of the defense and lands at your attackers feet. My through balls are always flat, how do you knock them up (I'm sorry, I'm not sure what the word I'm looking for is)?

Hold R1 + Triangle is for over the top through balls, you can do long ones but the longer your hit them the harder they are to connect, however in a built up box providing your player is already running (after you passed and pressed r1) you can just 'dink' it thro by holding R1 and Tap triangle - once you try you'll see what i mean.

I think high through balls are really good too gravy but what about 1-2 passing and luring some defenders and playing the through ball through the open space?

Something else I've noticed is that when the player you're controlling is right outside the penalty area you've always got 2-3 players running further in to receive the pass. My players dont really do that, any idea why that is?
