My PS3 switched itself off halfway through a game of Nazi Zombies last night and I've tried to turn it on today and it's just flashing red, after going from green to yellow. :faceplm:

I've had this problem before and had to get a replacement PS3, it fucking sucks though - I thought this problem was 0.03% chance of happening. I can't be that unlucky..

Is it the new style model or the old fat job? I heard they fixed that for the streamline models, if thats not the case I won't be upgrading just yet.

After 3 years, my PS3 has had enough. It's got the infamous yellow light of death.

Was on PES last night and it crashed during a game, it's crashed before so at that moment I didn't think much of it. Went over to boot it back up and it wouldn't turn on, green light and then a yellow and then a blinking red light.

Does anyone know what causes this? Would you recommend me fixing it myself, or sending it off to Sony or even an independent PS3 repairer? How much will it cost to repair?

I'd get a new one but then I'd lose everything. My PES is still in the console, so I'd like to get that out at some point.

It's the 60GB Fat model, the very first one which came out :crymore:

I said it before when matt's PS3 went and my advice to anyone that has a bust PS3 is simply this;

Don't stinge and try and fix it yourself or get a cheaper one second hand, because that could also be close to breaking, theres no way to tell if a PS3 is close or not, so just get a brand new one. Try and get as much as you can for the broken one (some shops will still buy broken ones because they can sell the parts and shit) and just get a new one.

It'll also help to ease your mind about it all; buying a new PS3 is obviously a better bet than getting a used one in god knows what condition.

Thanks Dale.

Tomorrow I'm gonna ring a shop that does PS3 repairs and see how much they'd want to fix it for me. Hope they're reasonable and do it for a nice price.

I wanna get a new PS3 but £200 is a lot of money :\

Ok, I went to Game today to try and trade in Bioshock 2. But I couldn't, apparently it was an import version. Well, this can't be true, since I bought the regular copy off amazon uk. Do imported games even work on Uk ps3's? I'm thinking, it may just be the box. The box has one of the PEGI ratings on, and the disk has the uk 18 certificate on it.

Slim ones don't get YLOD do they? Or so I've heard. My plan was this -
GAME will trade in a fat for a slim, provided the old one's working, for about £100 I think. So, just do the botch repair to get it working then BAM!

Yeah same thing happened to me with a few games. Oblivion, Virtua Tennis 3 and one of the Virtua Fighter games. CEX wouldn't even take them so I just kept them.

Haha sounds like a good idea. Any PS3 can get it I think, it's just the fat ones are much more prone to it. Something about the old hardware and the way its set up not being able to handle the newer firmwares.

After ringing that shop today, they said £70 to repair it, with 28 day guarantee.

Here are my 3 options:

#1 Pay £70 and get it repaired by a man who fixes 15 PS3s a week that have yellow light of death.

#2 Splash out on a brand new 160gb slim - saw one on HMV for £210, if anywhere else does 'em cheaper I'd greatly appreciate it if you post a link on here :]

#3 Let my dad try and fix it himself and if it doesn't work out the ps3 is fucked, meaning I have to buy a new PS3. He knows about electronics and stuff.

Leaning more towards #3 then 2 at the moment.

It depends how much you're bothered about your saved data. If you are bothered, it will be worth trying to get it fixed. If you take it to your dad, make sure he has a look on the internet. I know of at least one YLOD fixing tutorial on youtube. Even if he does know a lot about electronics, it's still worth him checking.

Afraid to say it but your best bet is to buy from new. I know people who've had their PS3's repaired to only break again weeks later with the same issue. I know this doesn't make it the norm but better safe than sorry.
