They already have. They were released in American a few months back iIrc.

Don't think it's possible. Besides, I don't think that anyone would want to download a 40gb file

MGS 4 is the only PS3 game that comes close to 40GB. Most of the games will only take up double what the 360 versions do due to the lack of compressed audio. Oblivion on the 360 for example is 7GB, whereas the PS3 version is 13-ish.

Backups, aye right.

Actually, there are genuine reasons for making backups of your CD/DVD/Blu-Ray collection especially if you live with small children or pets or if you simply want to borrow your originals to your friends or relatives.

As long as you own the original and you have the hardware to read and write the discs then there is nothing stopping you from making a backup copy for yourself. As long as you keep the backup copy to yourself and you own the original then you are not breaking any law.

I only asked the question about modding because I want to be able to playback my backup discs without worrying about the originals.

I didn't mention anything about downloading - just is it possible to play backups on a PS3?

Its going really tricky modding the PS3.

I thought that maybe a 3rd party Firmware could allow the playback of BD-R and BD-RE discs for PS3 games?

Seeing as the Xbox 360 DVD drive can be flashed with a 3rd party Firmware and allow the playback of Xbox 360 backups and imports, I thought that maybe the PS3 could be modded in a similar way?

I know that the PS3 already plays imported games but I'm not too sure about PS3 backups on BD-R and BD-RE discs.

Also blank Blu-ray disks are at a ridiculous price and so to are recorders. It's not worth the hassle at the moment.

BD-RE drives and discs are going to become cheaper over the next 2 years as with most technology products so I would simply like to know if the PS3 modding possibility is there.

Sorry about that, I always assumed that playing backups = playing pirated games.

That's why they're called backups and not pirated games.

Like I said above, ideally you would want to make a backup just in case something happens to the original disc i.e. if the original disc becomes cracked, broken or severely scratched etc.

But if you make a backup for yourself, then obviously you need a modding method to allow playback of the backup disc.

Even if you could do backups, there is no way you'll be able to play online anymore.

They force you to download the official updates to play online.

That's probably true. My point is that you would want a backup anyway as an idiot-proof measure to protect your originals.

If playing offline is what it takes to play a backup then I would be willing to play offline.

That doesn't matter much to me though as online gaming is still a new concept to me and I don't think I would miss the online aspect of the game.

Uncharted gone Platinum. Might buy it, just for the trophies.

Although the yellow on the case cover just aint cool. What happened to the silver!

I got a question for those here who have got the 40 Gb PS3.

Has anyone here actually managed to play a PS2 game (original, import or backup) on a 40 Gb PS3?

I know they're not supposed to play them but I heard a rumour about the possibility of PS2 games being played on a 40 Gb PS3 by installing an Emulator on the Hard Drive.

Anyone wanna shed any light on this?
