Because of uni work i've not played the Playstation in what seems like months man. I guess about 2-3 months?

About 2-3 days now. Sony confirmed it is an "outside intrusion" within the network, so hackers are more than likely to blame.

Yeah, PSN being down hasn't bothered me all that much - I haven't paid for plus, and it's not like I've been playing any games online lately anyway.

The only time I thought "ugh" was when I was about to check my LOVEFiLM account and use VidZone yesterday, until I remembered you need to be signed in. Nothing Youtube/using LOVEFiLM on the PC doesn't fix though, so again, not a huge problem for me.

How is this going to affect new releases? There tends to be an upgrade of some sort over the first couple of days after release, right?

Maybe developers will actually have to take their time before releasing a game with loads of bugs now. It won't happen but it'd be a positive to come out of a bad situation.

IIRC I read yesterday that the PSN isn't connected to software patches server and PS3 update server, so software updates will still be available and released as normal.

Woah, this is getting crazy now.

So is that anonymous video at the top of this page actually from the hackers? I'm a little confused here. I'm also baffled as to how something as seemingly sophisticated as Sony's network can be hacked to the point of destruction, this is crazy. Does this also affect Blu-ray viewing as many Blu-rays now include the Movie IQ feature, so is this feature also compromised now?

No as it is only the PSN features that require an active connection with your PSN(online gaming, PSN games that require an PSN connection, and PSN store) that are affected, everything else such as blu-ray features just uses your internet connection (for example the internet browser on the ps3 still works as it doesn't need the psn, it just needs ur internet connection)

One of my games updated the other day, so I can confirm that you don't need PSN for updates.
