PS3's galore!

Everybody knows the real reason for people not buying the first batches of PS3 on release.... they won't work in 2 years time!

Seriously though, the most units are shifted once the console is cemented in the market and a few games are released which people have to play (PES & GTA4 as jonno394 said). Plus also the little issue of a reduced price.

I think the end of year (especially Christmas) will see the real war beginning and will be an interesting insight into which console will seemingly 'win' in the coming years.

actually from what i've read sony did not sell as much as the 360 and the wii. But the management said the launch sales does not matter, long term do. and thats exactly right.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/6499841.stm

The PlayStation 3 console has broken UK sales records with more than 165,000 machines sold in the first two days of release, say analysts Chart Track.
More than a million consoles were shipped across Europe on launch day last week with 600,000 sold.

Sony is hoping to retake its title as the console market leader, as Microsoft and Nintendo head the next-gen race.

Meanwhile, games firm Namco Bandai has said it is to use the PS3's Cell chip in arcade machines.

Microsoft sold 71,000 Xbox 360 consoles during its UK launch weekend, while Nintendo sold 105,000 Wii machines.

But both companies offered limited stock to retailers, which led to shortages.

I only decided to get mine after an insurance claim and the fact I get decent discount at a shop that sells them but as a PS3 owner I'm happy if not overwhelmed by the games - there could do with being a few more, especially games that aren't ports of 360 games. Why use Blu-ray if you're just going to port games that fit on a DVD.

But I have a few other things to do this summer before I get stuck in to about 4/5 games coming out between September-December. And this way I get my PS3 now and can get a HD TV in January when they'll have come down in price by more than the cost of a PS3and I'll have had my £££'s out of the console by then too.

No matter what Next Gen console you have you can be quite happy cos lets face it, all the figting over who's better etc... PS3 has a bigger graphics card setup but can't utilise it all yet whereas 360 has a better processor. Either way you'll be happy. The games on each... 360 has a head start cos it's been out longer but I think it'll mainly be most of the same game's that get released on each with much the same graphics and HD glory. (HD really is in danger of destroying the games industry though) Ps3 will miss out on games like... Gears of War, Lost Planet, Halo 3, Crackdown, PGR, Dead Rising, Kameo. Xbox 360 will miss out on games like MGS4 and Motorstorm. So 360 and PS3 both have bright futures, who cares about the "console War" I'm sick of hearing about it, as far as I'm concerned the 360 is better purely due to the fact I work in the industry and they have some of the best dev programs i've ever worked with, very reliable, that doesn't mean i'm slating anyone who prefers PS3, just my insider view as is the view of most of my colleagues.

None of those games made me want to buy a 360 though - perhaps if Pro Evo had have been better things would have been different. I tend to have 1 or 2 games that I play regularly, Pro Evo being the only game that play all year, and dip in and out of a few other games.

There is talk at the moment of the 360's core system hampering the development GTA IV. On order to create a game for a system with no HDD and that will fit onto a DVD owners of full system 360's/360 Elite and PS3 are going to end up with game that no matter how good it is could have been better/bigger. I hope this doesn'tcontinue for cross platform games in the future and I'm sure owners of the the better 360's would feel the same.

If I could afford both (and had the time to play both) then I probably would. I'm already fed up with reading the constant bickering over whcih is better peopel jsut need to enjoy whatever they've got.

oh i was not looking at uk sales, but thanks for the info. Looks like europe and new zealand sales figures are record breaking.
I was actually refering to my country, where the wii has the biggest sales, then the 360.
In the states everyone is looking to get a wii but it has been sold out for months.

thats interesting.

i heard pal games uses up heaps of space so some games dont support HD (1080p) bcuz of all the languages put in the games. bummer

I doubt it, cos Crackdown, Saints Row and Just Cause for 360 all have massive maps and draw distances and they work out fine, specially Just Cause, its massive. So if GTA IV is gonna have similar sized environments and looks etc to those games then it should be fine. :)

That's not what I'm saying, previous GTA's have struggled to shoehorn everything onto the media (DVD) - now imagine how much more they could do if they used a 50Gb BR disc, HD DVD or even DVD + HDD storage to their full capacity. The talk is that the 360 Elite will have a Blue Ray drive so the 360 Core system is going to a be a weak link unless it has its own version of x-platform games. I'm a bit confused over what's going to happen there tbh, I suppose there will come a point where Core owners have to upgrade to be able to play some new games.

This definately won't be an issue now but wait until the next generation of next-gen games start evolving to make full use of the technology and media.

Where did you hear that?

Microsoft would never put a Blu-Ray drive in an Xbox 360 if the HD-DVD is a competing format, which it is at the moment.

Microsoft have backed the HD-DVD and will stick with it until it either succeeds or dies. If the HD-DVD dies, then Microsoft may think about defecting to Blu-Ray.

But that scenario is many, many years away from happening.

I'll believe it when I see it - many analysts have got things wrong before in the past.

I seriously doubt that Microsoft would give up so easily on the HD-DVD. Especially when you consider that they've poured so much money into developing it with Toshiba.

I personally can't see the HD-DVD dying. It is the cheaper format when compared to Blu-Ray. HD-DVD players and original HD-DVD films are cheaper than their Blu-Ray counterparts, that's a fact.

This is only going to attract more buyers.

As far as I can see, Blu-Ray has a tough battle on it's hands.

Crysis will rule yeah, but the price to upgrade your PC for best looks will kill, be worth it though :) Xbox exclusives though... I don't think your giving them enough credit, Gears of War is without doubt one of the best games i've ever played. The new footage of Progect Gotham 4 also... the cars when it rains all have INDIVIDUAL water droplets which run down the hood, windows etc and mesh into one little puddle and run off, now thats impressive, can't wait to see it in action. The reflections and car scraping and damaging barriers leaving a paint trail on them sounds nice too. It's good to see all of these graphical improvements in games but it just makes me worry that all games will become will be graphical displays rather than good playable games. I don't mind playing a game with below average graphics as long as it had great gameplay, Abes Oddysey for instance, one of my faves, wasn't exactly cutting edge, 2D and 3D mixed but only 3D in small areas of the game. I think we all just have to be careful that we don't all get to bogged down in the appearance side of things, it'll turn games into fashion shows :(

Agreed...Gears is different gravy and i have no issues with how PG4 looks...i mean i believe the vast majority of people will say Gran Tourismo has it in its pocket....but racing games (unless they are super fast and unrealistic e.g Wipeout) are not my cup of tea. besides it winds the fuck out of me when i smack into a wall on GT and nothing happens to the car:realmad:. as far as your worries on game fashion shows are concerned..well its the Classic Pro v Fifa debate. Pro gives us the most amazing realistic gameplay where as Fifa gives us the Graphics. which one sells more....your worries are warrented my friend:erm:

Consoles sold

Consoles Sold:
Xbox 360 = 10,615,169
Wii = 6,842,391
PS3 = 3,001,246

The numbers dont lie. Obviously Sony is getting there ass kicked by the competition. They just hit the 3million mark which is very sad. Things aren't looking good for Sony. Sorry playstation fans :/ Maybe they should drop the price so people can actually afford it. DEEDEEDEE!!!

It was a gamble to put in a Blu-Ray player, we'll see how it ends. You can't just drop the price though. It's a respectable amount considering the price. They did copy a couple of things off the 360, but of course that goes both (not counting Nintendo) ways. PS3's exclusive just don't do it for me ( such as MGS, Killzone and GT) whereas the 360 offers exactly what I like. Personal preference is what makes you buy one of them right?

As for racing games, Colin McRae looks stunning.

racing games are boring, dont mind rally but straight racing like gt or pgr3 are just plain dull to me.
il miss mgs even the series has gone down hill since its release on the ps1 which was awesome, but killzone is mediocre at best. the only thing i can think this "analyst" could be thinking is that they may put a blu ray player as an option like the hd dvd drive where it just plugs into usb,but this would only be to play blu ray movies and have nothing to do with gaming. for me thats the only logical explanation for this "analyst" saying that.

oh and what about RIVALDO for your list of unpunished divers???

hey you have to remember the 360 had a year headstart. AND sony has all these features which makes it as good as it is. a multimedia system all in one. just take a look at the psx/1 and ps2 sales.. stayed strong till now where their competion died ages ago.
oh and they are releasing a new PS3 model in 2008.

i agree that microsoft wont give up. yet blu ray competition? in the states blu ray sales has far surpassed hd dvd. sign of things to come?

if xbox ever does get the bluray drives, it will make a statement and sony would look good.

i think hd dvds will do better because of name association. everybodys getting a hdtv and i think theyl get a hd dvd player because they will associate with the tv whereas blu ray has no name association with the popular hdtvs. just what i think.
