Question about heading direction - shooting

Heading towards the goal seems to be only main thing I'm struggling to come to terms with and work out exactly what's going on.

I have shooting set to manual and all, but it always seems to be that from crosses around the box at all, my header generally goes straight or back in the diagonally towards the same direction the cross came from.

I realise that aiming for the far post with a near post header is a pretty difficult technique, but I can't seem to ever get it to go anywhere else than straight out by that near post?

I figured that maybe using the right stick might help body positioning when going for a header, and I thought it worked once in the skills training as I did seem to get it to go where I wanted it to, but that's a really rare occasion.

So, am I doing something wrong or is attempting a header on goal from anywhere other than in front of the goal or at the far post pointless? I mean, my manual shots are just fine. To the point that I keep getting accusations of using assisted shooting now, so it feels weird that I can't get headers to go in any real direction at all?

Playing on PS4, btw.

I play with basic shooting, as I prefer to adjust height through power. I'm just used to it. Using this method to placed headers you just need to point to here you want the ball. If I recall correctly manual shooting, to go near the ground, has to be pointed towards your own goal. What technique are you using?

Going to the ground on manual I think is with pressing the shoot button early in the cross. I tried pressing towards my own goal and the header went towards my own goal, so at least I know the direction is working that way.

Seeing as heading into the ground is about timing, I take it heading across goal is similar too. I successfully got another decent header across goal in training after about 20 tries and my player opened up his body for a change. So it's probably a mixture of positioning, body movement and timing. That and probably heading skill of the player too...

I'll keep at it until I get it right and notice the pattern. I've been doing manual controls for shooting for so long now I don't think I could pick anything else.

Nope.

That pointing towards your own goal is [ADVANCED SHOOTING] not manual.

Racket89 Would pressing R2 before powering the shot make any difference?

It hasn't seemed to make a difference at all, no.

I've been messing about with the headers and volleys skill training and while I see a pattern, you're more likely to head it across goal if you wait until the ball is almost on your head right near when your player would attempt a chest trap, but even timing it at that point it still seems random and just as likely to not go near that direction.

I guess it's fair enough you can't do it too easily, but just found it strange in the first place to be struggling with something when directional shooting and passing seems pretty free otherwise.

I think you need to have your direction set before you take your finger off the shoot button, no matter how early you press shoot whether you want to header it into the ground or what not. They usually go the direction I want when I do this. I use basic shooting.

Yes, that's true. You must direct the passes/shots/headers WHILE building the power gauge. Every change to the L stick after that does nothing. At least it seems so to me.

I have tested it as far as pressing it from just before pressing to shoot right through until after it has left my head and gone out, thought it might have been my problem in the first place but it never was for manual.
