Sports games in general not up to scratch

Does anyone think that the dearth in good footie games is really just part of a wider problem, that is a lack of good sports games.

I'm sure a lot of you are pure football fans but I love lots of different sports and at least this latest PES is playable, have you tried playing Brian Lara Cricket - oh my God, is that bad or is that bad?!! The new basketball games are hopelessly boring and soulless, they used to be so good on the SNES! The rugby is OK but really I would trade all the Alien shoot-em-ups in the world to have good, fun, playable versions of rugby, basketball and cricket.

I've seen videos of NHL 2008 today, and the animations are crap. Players look like they're having a seizure, the transition between animations is horrible. In that respect, FIFA or PES are way better, and I see no reason why such a high-budget, modern game should look that bad.

agreed... here in the states Madden rules the scene, but its gotten worse and worse every year now for at least 5 years...instead of getting more real, its gotten more arcadey.

at least PES keeps the gameplay realistic.

The NHL series are horrible, the FIFA equivalent. What do you expect from EA . They seem to have serious problems getting stats right as well. I hear the NHL2k series are good, never tried myself.

Have you played Wii Sports or Mario and Sonic Olympics? Great fun. The Wii is where you'll see creativity in sports titles.

There arent enough rival sports games to EA. PES is one example but unless more companies make their own sports games then of course EA will make a crappy game.

yeah i think thats true, but in the uk and most of europe football is the dominant sport so if games makers are going to try hit the market with anything it would be footy, i recently emailed capcom asking why they dont join the competition with a football game, as expected they dismissed my idea:laugh:

in terms of licensing etc, nobody can touch FIFA (or EA) which is probably why FIFA still sells as much as it does, if it had the 'Man Red' of PES in it then FIFA would just be 100% dismissed as a serious title..
