Strategies

Does anybody have a good understanding of what the strategies do? What I'm getting at is that you have strategy options such as 'centre attack' and 'counter attack' which you can use with L2 + (button), but you also have a 'quick strategy' centre & counter attack, which alters the attack/defence arrows of your players. What is the difference? Anyone know/care?

And you have 'zone press' strategy with L2 + button, but also in the formation bit you have 'team strategy' where you can alter the zone press to A B or C. Are these connected? Are the latter settings only effective if I implement a zone press strategy with L2?

I guess no-one will know, but maybe the seasoned pros among us have some ideas?

Yeah, yeah.

The [Manual] strategy options can be switched on and off as suits during the game. (There is also the Automatic option). Same with the overall Team Attack/Defence level - the colour bar from Blue to Red underneath the power bar.

Quick Settings, seem to effect the Team Strategies and Attack directions of players and the Attack/Defence level of the Team as a whole. They will be active throughout the game.

They deal with most of the same aspects of the Team's set-up, but Quick Settings is not so subtle.

Still, if you have to change things around with 5 minutes left in a match, is your opponent going to wait patiently while you tinker around in five different parts of your team set-up? No.

The best use for Quick Settings that I can see is to get your team do what's required, especially late on in a game.

Likewise, the 'zone press' strategy with L2 + button is controllable manually so you can switch it on or off, the formation bit will influence the team's approach throughout the game. A to hammer whatever tactic (e.g. Line Defence and Off-side) or C to not waste the energy (e.g. Zone Press).

They are connected, they overlap. So you can vary them for the team and individual players for a whole match, or only at your command, triggered by using the manual options.

Thanks for your coherent reply Cellini - yeah, I see what you're saying and it makes sense. Using L2+button allows you to change strategy 'secretly' from human opponent, while using quick settings is in full view of your mate and pauses the game which is a pain. But I wouldn't waste assigning a manual (L2) strategy button to (say) centre attack, when I can do that via quick settings and keep an L2 button assignment for (say) offside trap, which isn't duplicated in quick settings.

I rarely pay much attention to my opponent's strategy. I suspect the same goes in reverse. Rare exceptions are when I know the opposition will be very dependent on an individual, e.g. Aimar at Valencia, or Van Nistlerooy at Man Utd.

The major difference between these ways of applying strategies is that the Manual ones (L2 + assigned button) can be applied or stopped instantly depending on the way the game is going.

Personally I tend to assign X to Counter-Attack, [] to Offside trap, O to Opposite side and /\ to Centre Attack.

The Formation (Attack, Defence system and Mark settings) and the Quick settings like 'Side Attack' apply to the team, or individual players throughout a match.

I now use Attack to set each of my DMF's to cover a side of the pitch and another arrow for their forward runs. SMF one arrow down the wing and the other inside and forward. OMF forward to goal and back to drop deep and receive the ball. CF's like DMF's cover a side each, and their other arrows point back towards MF so they may drop deep to receive the ball to feet.

For Defence System I use Line, and set Line Control and Offside trap to A (ugly but effective at breaking down opposition attacks at the first stage), and Zone Press to C to avoid ball-chasing.

In Mark Setting I generally just set the deeper DMF to CV so that my defence won't often be unprotected. If the opposition are dependent on a superstar CF or OMF I might occaisionally set someone to Man Mark them out of the game. A CBT for a star striker, or a DMF for an outstanding playmaker.

Do all of you guys use this strategy stuff?
Hey Cellini - what do u mean u assign offside trap to A, zone press to C? I thought u could choose 1 defense system. can u rotate during the match?

Cellini - when you are deciding to go with a Man-marking system, are you given the option to choose which striker or OMF (by name) you want to cover, or is it more vague, i.e. you just choose a defender or DMF to cover the left/right side CF/OMF??
Cheers.

rebus mate, have you managed to chat while you play yet? I like a bit of a chat while playing but you weren't too keen on that as I recall. Kept pausing the game! And no, that wasn't a cheeky tactic by me to put you off either.......

Flattery will get you.... dunno! :)

What's your team these days? I have a nice formation which I can use with any team (I prefer nationals though) and I seem to do well. Playing with all players on red arrows though - a la national league stylee.

I like to use the Counter-Attack strategy a bit.

CMF Vieira
RMF Henry
LCF Dunant (pp)
RCF RVN

Good team and squad. I'll start by playing with China and after you thrash me I'll change it to Ecuador or something... Then it'll get tough!! :)

These setting are under Formation -> List Team Settings.

There it lists your Attack/Defence level; the Defence System; and there are 4 general intstructions you can use to influence the attitude of your players to...
1. Back Line
2. Zone Press
3. Counter-Attack
4. Offside trap.

You can set these from A to C, where A will hammer that style and C will make it a low priority - e.g. set 'Back Line' to A means holding that Back line will be a top priority, while Zone press at C will mean players hold to their positions more, rather than always pressing the ball. Setting it as B would be normal/default.

There are various ways to get implement similar tactics like holding the back line. Some tactics/strategies will work will together, others will conflict. Just have to try them out with a team your comfortable with, varying them slightly to see how they work out. Some, like Mark settings, will over-ride others.

Yes, under Formation -> Individual -> Mark Settings.

For any of your players (usually a DF or DMF), you can choose:
CV - covering
ZN - zonal
MK (?) - Man-marking. When this is selected, the opposition line-up is displayed, you pick who your player will mark. Then how aggressively, which I guess means just how tight they're going to be about following their target around compared to other defensive duties.

As an aside, the game suggests a Sweeper system will try to combine man-marking of attackers while holding the selected sweeper free as a covering defender. Good against some teams, or certain playing styles, but it would likely conflict with a Back Line set as priority 'A'.

Cellini, thanks for all the info. Any advice for how to use the Formation A and Formation B properly? For me it seems to keep going back to default after I saved the settings.

Sounds whenever we next meet up! I would also appreciate some training on using the tricks too.

Best way to practice tricks is in training mode or against teams on 1* or 2*.
I'll be playing you soon so be prepared!

I've never got the hang of that one. I originally hoped it meant you could stock two formations (e.g. a 3-5-2 and a 4-4-2) on the same block, but when you go through all the trouble of setting up an alternative formation, you can't exit without reverting to whatever the main formation has been set as.

I think they're aimed at use during a game, with the Manual strategys ( :L2: + :circle: , :triangle: , :x: etc)

So, say you start of as a 3-5-2 but find you lost 2 goals in the first half from crosses. If you've set up a manual strategy you can instantly change to a 4-4-2 formation with 2 full backs.

The annoying bit is, you have to take care that the players who move position can play in both.

The only time I ever used it, I set up :L2: + :triangle: as 'Formation A'. Having created that as a 4-4-2, where I had a left footed DMF (Penbe I think) who could slot into LB. The CBT on the right side also had to be capable of playing RB.

Maybe useful late in a game if your chasing a goal if you have SMF players capable of joining the attack as RWF and LWF. Or a DMF who can step up and play as an OMF.

There are a few real teams that actually switch formation depending on whether they're in possession or not. I'd have to find Don Howe and him who though. Valencia, Argentina and Roma maybe.

There are a lot of full-backs in the game who can play as SMF too, so they could push up to play there while any player already in that position moved to OMF or RWF.

same happens to me as well. also cheers cellini - but if I leave all of the def. strategies at B priority, does it mean my team is going to do all of them in the same priority? also, what kind of level do you set to your cursor-change system? I use manual.
