Stupid question - football vs. soccer

I understand the history of the words, but calling a game where you kick a ball with a foot anything other than football is ridiculous. Even worse is when a game where padded men throw something closer to a sausage than a ball around is called football.

I've only called it soccer once in my life. Back when I used to go school, this kid from Canada came to out school for a week. I don't know why...
But yeah we told him 'You wanna game of football?' and he says 'Football? Now? I'm wearing a suit and have got shoes on..' then we said 'Just take of your blazer and tie, swap your shoes for a pair of trainers and lets get on with it' then he said 'WTF? I still can't play football like that'
It's then that we realised that he was thinking of American Football! So I used the term 'soccer' instead. The kid was actually retarted the way he ran...:)

I think Soccer AM is called it because it sounds betterthan Football AM? I don't know...But I know for a fact that no-one on the show calls it soccer...

And PES is called PES because do you think PEF would sound good?
Thats probably not the reason though lol.
It's because over in Japan I think they call it Soccer too. So if they make PES, they're going to use Soccer.

I wonder why they don't just keep the name Winning Eleven for all regions. They used to release it as Winning Eleven here in the States.
