The eureka moment

So I've had WE9I for a week and a half or so, and for the first week I hated it as much as anyone here. All the players seemed mildly retarded at best, the constant fouls drove me crazy, and I couldn't score a goal to save my life.

I don't think many "professional" reviews of the game have really noticed how drastically different this game is from WE8. My last five or six ML seasons with that one, I'd play ****** and finish the year with a goal differential of +150 or so, never losing a match in any competitions. Streak down the wings with Solskjaer or Miunel, blow past the defense, cross, header, goal. One-two pass with Shearer and Zola, blow past the defense, opposite-side top corner. Lather, rinse, repeat.

But you can't do that anymore - you can't do a lot of things anymore. A couple days ago I made a real effort to stop R1 running almost entirely, pay close attention to the way I made and received passes, and concentrated on slowly building up my attacks. Now, instead of bursting forward the second I win possession, I'll play the ball back to a DMF, defender, or even the keeper if necessary, and really try to piece together an intelligent attack. In other words, I'm playing football the way it's really played.

Now, instead of struggling for a point against crap sides, I can compete against any of them. In one "game" week ('07 season) I beat Chelsea 4-1 and Liverpool 2-0 in the D1 cup match - and this was only days after getting thumped by West Brom. (This is with the base Newcastle side, plus Torres and Mathieu and minus Robbie Elliott and Lee Clark.) Now that I've figured out the game mechanics and what does and doesn't work, I'm enjoying it more and any other version. I've played them all faithfully, almost daily, since WE6 was released in the States, and this really is the best. My fouls have been cut in half (patience is key - stop pressuring so much and don't barge into players from behind!), and I'm regularly getting 15-20 shots per game.

For all the haters, know that I was once one of you but have seen the light. It's not too late for you, either. You owe it to yourself to experience this game the right way. I got tired of destroying every team in WE8; winning 10-0 gets old after a while. It's infinitely more satisfying to squeak out a hard-fought 2-1 win in WE9 and know that you've earned it.

A nice little review/helper there mate. I felt exactly the same way, couldn't find a good opening when I first got the game and if I did it would lead to an incredibly poor shot. I found it difficult to shoot and blamed it on Konami's new shitty shooting system. However the more time you put into it, you not only improve on these parts, you improve as an all-round player. Thats the satisfaction you get out of PES5, you could win a game 1-0 but it would be so hard fought. Once you will hear that final whistle go it really is like music to your ears. If you also score a belter or even a nicely team-worked goal you get excited about it, sometimes to the point of standing celebrations I find. Overall this game becomes better the more you play on it...

Im gonna say... you're all liars. or maybe I got stuck with a bunk copy of the game because my AI teammates dont so shit except stand there and look at me. Occasionally they'll follow me around when Im on the ball. They never run onto my through passes... I use manual passing, which was my trademark in we8. But now since super cancel doesnt work for beans because of the sheer slowness (rather lack of agility) of the players, trying to use manual passing is futile. So, a better conclusion would be...

only some playing styles are catered to in we9, not all of them. AND THAT SUCKS ASS... my copy = sold already. FIFA STREET HERE I COME!!!

There is no such thing as a "playing style" in WE8, so I don't understand what you're talking about. Perfect passing and smaller body / ball physics means that formations don't matter, longballs don't matter, all that matters is the cynical 1-2 dribble dribble turn backward, turn forward, turn backward, pass, etc etc until you're in the box and shoot. If you can't see just how huge of an upgrade this version is then I doubt you've ever played against anybody who got any good at WE8.

WE9 is all about getting a creative feel for the flow of the game. WE8 had very little of this feel; it was, for the most part, just watch and pass, watch and pass.

Pick up WE9 again and try to learn some patience. When your move doesn't work, cut your losses and do the smart play. Or send a computer guy to cover and you cover the angles (another thing that didn't mean jack in WE8 , since passes were all but unblockable). Or hell... do the risky play and run into some space, assuming you'll get the ball back right away. There are *so* many new options now in WE9 for creative football, and once you forget about being able to 100% 'do the thing and score' and start to be able to play smart football, knowing your risks and getting a mind for the space and feel of the pitch and flow of the game, you will be able to pull off some really *really* satisfying wins.

Great post, nyctoon..

yea i have to constantly tell myself that inorder to clean up the touches i have to let go of R1. its a good thing to have but you can no longer depend on it.

Yeah, same here... I can actually see where frustration comes from, because even after playing the game for months I often accidently do the old R1 push or even the R1+R2 super push out in front when I receive a pass in the box, ruining the play.

Holding R2 works wonders in the box though.

Something I've been experimenting with is the ground-cross (triple O while in play or hold down and press O from a set piece), with an instant L1 switch and a super cancel run-on-and-shoot. If you are really quick at knowing where to go, you can score some crafty goals like this. Or high crosses with a receiver with good balance, holding R2 and pressing right up against your mark, and then at the last second super cancelling around him. Sometimes you push him far enough off that he still can't get in on it and you can control it or kick it in. I'm pretty pleased with the seemingly endless levels of play that the cancelling/super cancelling seems to open up now..

Yep, you'd think people would learn, every time a new WE is released you get countless complaints that Konami ruined the game/it's to hard/the computer cheats/the AI sucks etc. from people who are frustrated that they can't use the same exact tactic they used to win 8-0 in the previous one. But then eventually they realize the finer nuances of the game and figure out they were just pants at it.

Patience??? Ive been playing this crap from the release date 2 weeks ago and have made no progress whatsoever. I play RL soccer too, so I do have a pretty fair understanding of the 'on the field' action/fundamentals/mechanics/whatever the hell you want to call them.

I didnt get 'good' enough to win 2343242-0 in the last damn game(8) because I didnt take the cheap ways out to score goals. You people assume too much. I like to play the soccer games for the soccer, thats the only damn reason I played WE's over FIFA's. But with this game I dont even have time to move when I trap the ball before Im swarmed by 3 defenders because the players move so damn slowly. It reminds me of a cartoon where you hear the screaching tire sound effect while they're sliding around. On higher difficulties the computer ALWAYS has EVERY man covered so you cant make a clean pass... hence my argument for shitty AI. THE PLAYERS DONT MOVE... not on my copy the didnt anyway. The AI didnt allow for smart footy because I couldnt rely on my teammates to find an opening... and the few times they did decide to walk away from a defender my through ball just whizzed past them like a shot because the player didnt react to the Super Cancel until it was too late.

Maybe you guys are just so goddamn good because you've put in countless hours of playing this rediculousness and tweaking every last detail of your players attacking patterns and what not. I for one, would rather have an out of the box, smooth game where my entire team is making itself useful without my saying how, unless I want it done in a certain way. FINDING ANY OPEN AREA on a field of what, ~7000 sq. feet, is not difficult. Thats all Ive ever asked from soccer games... and thats all I never got.

The AI is fine (well it isn't outstanding but nothing to do with these reasons) ... but it isn't there to babysit you. You need to add some attacking arrows in the formations in the right places, approach markers and pull them in different directions, play the ball back to open up the defenses, etc.

Murc you talk utter piles of shitty fecal waste, id love to play u online and show you me passing the ball to open players who have run in intelligent places because, and here is the science you have to tell them to! IE when you set up the formation actually use the arrows! and when u are playing use the radar! i mean just play it like its football and you will win. If you feel you aint getting passed anyone change your formation shape if they start to get all the posession once you win the ball pass it around the back line before playing it up field make the ai work. it sound like you try too hard i barely use super cancel and im pretty good at it and this version rarley needs manual pass. and btw FIFA IS AND ALWAYS WILL BE THE SHITTEST MOST UNREALISTIC PILE OF CRAP IN THE WORLD!!!!! ps before i go my flat mate just got fifa on 360 and its crap he shoots from 40 yards out and bends it into the top corner by simply pressing shoot if that is fun to use unsubscribe from this site and go talk to the brainless fifa fans cos im sick of reading about peeps winey reasons for not liking pes5.

Guys it's all you, you have to appreciate real football and know the basic moves of PES5 & WE9.

To play PES 5 you need to remember two important things; and two small tips*

1) Offense: after passing quickly tap :R2:;) That's covers half the game already!
* Before your first touch hold :R1:+:R2: (One finger!)And try to do a 180 or 135 degree turn for a head start in an unpredictable direction.

2) Defence: :R1: to run and push, :R2: to lock on and keep close, :R1:+:R2: with THE CORRECT DIRECTIONS (to move around opponent without fouling).
* :circle: slide makes more sense than :x: tackle when the ball is further away.

:R1: & :R2: are your power & accuracy. Slide your index finger up :R1: and down :R2: or keep it in between for fast maneuvering.

How would that help? It would just show him how stupid his AI defenders are to not mark your players, further compounding the problem. I love how your solution to his problem is for you to kick his ass in a game. No tips on how to set his arrows to get a desired result, just "I'd love to play u online".

Classic.

Why are you assuming that I play fifa? I'd rather play nothing that play that shite.

And why dont you play me online? Then you can doubly reassure yourself that your being "superior" when it comes to video gaming really matters for something.

WOSCO i really actually dont care ive just seen MURC moaning in so many rooms when ive been trying to find out info on the game instead of complaints that i thought id wind him up a bit. and MURC keep practicing and i bet you change your mind and if u want my xbox live tag is hardcorebashers (name wasn't chosen by me before you say its gay, i know its gay) so if u add me i will play you even though if u are american it wont work anyway without a shite load of lag. and no i dont have a superiority complex i just wanted to use this site to get the game patched and find out stuff i havent found out for myself but no its full of winey peeps who think they should just be good at it by default. i think its all rather sad i mean what do u want from people when youy moan about the game reassurance that it is shit dont you have any real friends to ask instad of posting on forums loads. and before you say it i have only posted on this forum about 3-4 times and never before in my life on any other forum so dont think im a saddo with nothing better to do.

peace and fucking!

Oh my god... what did you just say?

Only thing I got out of that was "Peace and Fucking"... Well, Happy peace and Fucking to you too, I guess... Fuck this game I mean.

Anyway, I've tried to find information about this shite as well. But all I get is PRACTICE YOU MOANY SOD!!! FACKING PWAKTISS!!! And to that I say... how? Practice what? Passing? I'll pass straight to where ever I wasnt aiming for practice, sure. Shooting? I'll shoot to the same exact spot 3 meters wide right of goal from every point on the field for practice. Dribbling? I'll practice dribbling then side stepping at an alarmingly slow pace for practice. Did I miss anything? Please, tell me what I missed.

--Maybe im just a bit at odds with everyone since lfc got done away with tonight.--

You can't pass or dribble or shoot. You obviously hate the game so just sell it and buy something you like better and quit whining. Amazing.

I, like everyone else, found that some things that worked well on WE8 don't work on WE9. So now I am adapting and playing differently. I don't have a lot of time to play but I love playing when I have time. I have had to lower the skill level a little because this game is initially (or maybe permanently) harder but that's cool. I'm getting better and having a great time learning. I think this game is much more fun and much more realistic than WE8. I have to master some of the more advanced controls but when I do I'm sure I'll play even better. GREAT GAME!!!
