The Pound For Pound Best Football Games Ever Made

All this Pes 2011 is the best game ever talk got me thinking........

1) No fucking way is PES 2011 the best game ever made

2) Pound for Pound, what games would you consider to be the best ever for their time.

By pound for pound, I mean how good the game was for its time, obviously PES 2011 is more advanced than sensible soccer, but sensible soccer for its time was a heavyweight game (i'm told, ive never played it, I actually used to prefer watching far better players than me play it).

This was the first game I ever played. International Football on Commodore 64, game was a beast back in the day, you could run with the ball on your head (kerlon like) and run it into the opponents goal. These days the game is the equivalent of Christopher reeve trying to break dance, but its still prolly got less bugs than fifa 11 (please no one put that shit game on your list)

Fucking hell, aint it odd how at the time when you played these old games they looked cutting edge, and now you think, how the fuck did i spend hours playing this shit?

Post youtube videos, explainations the lot.....your all time fav games the ones that defined generations, I dont wanna hear no "No one liked PES 2008 but I actually thought it was decent" talk, cos I'll be on the line to the admin trying to get them fuckers IP Banned.

Playstation 1.

ISS 98
FIFA: Road to World Cup 98

simples...

FIFA for its time was unreal, loads of teams - loads of stadiums - not to mention the indoor mini game.

I believe that was the very first game I got when I got my PS1 at Xmas, spent MANY MANY days on that game :)

ISS 98 was quality as well though, a story that's always stuck with me from the game; I was playing my bro (Yugoslavia v Scotland) can't remember who was who, but anyway last minute in the game I lob his keeper and just as it's about to bounce into the net, the ref blows for full time!!

NOTE: I also remember having a FIFA game for the SEGA Megadrive and if the ref was gonna book you, you could run away from him haha, classic!

(off topic a bit, but remember Street Fighter & Mario on the SNES! - they don't make em like that anymore :( )

Microprose soccer on Commodore 64!

Nah in truth I would say Pes 6 though it´s arcade as hell but very entertaining. However I´m in a love and hate relationship with Pes2011, with a good patch which fixes the switching players bug and many more it has the potential to become MY best ever football game, at least I hope so.

Winning Eleven 6 Final Evolution! (PS2)

That would be the equivalent of what, PES2 or 3 ?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jgjd2DQMpL0

if i remember things correctly i liked this game too, but i disliked that defending had become way too passive, not being able to play any other way. winning eleven 6 was too aggressive and the control was better in final evolution, but the extremely passive defending of final evolution ruined much for me, basically destroying the through ball.

i think winning eleven 6 j-league was even better than both winning eleven 6 and final evolution, but it also had passive defending. you could basically stand still with the ball and the cpu wouldnt challenge you at all. it didnt matter if you played human vs human either, because as you know pressing only with one or two players is still useless.

i don't enjoy aggressive football, quite the opposite, but the option of being able to press and challenge your opponent when the situation requires it must still be there or the game becomes completely unbalanced.

I remember back in the day being given a copy of Striker 96 - and let me tell ya I played the shit out of that game! had a sweet 6v6 indoor mode and I used to love putting a long pass into the wall above the goal then diving header the rebound for a sweet goal hahaha

Hey, I'd like to chime in in this interesting subject. SWOS 96/97 was "once" considered to be the Godfather of football (soccer) games. Even to this day some folks still believe this theory. Now, back then people really didn't have much to choose from and the gaming technology was obviously limited. Retro gaming which SWOS provides is indeed fun and at that time it included things that current PES/FIFA don't even have yet. But again we are talking about retro gaming here. Same can be said about Dino Dini's titles.

I personally started playing International Superstar Soccer 64, 98 on N64. Those two games will always hold a special place in my heart. Hours and hours spent playing on cold long winters and they never got boring. This is when I fell in live with Konami.

Now to end this subject, Winning Eleven 7:INTERNATIONAL (PS2) with Italian WEndetta patch is the best football (soccer) game ever released by Konami, even to this date. I remember the old Forum vets and PES gurus on PESinsight, EvoWeb and SoccerGaming will probably agree. This game was FLAWLESS. PICTURE PERFECT. I highly doubt we will ever see another gameplay like that game had to offer. I seriously am considering buying PS2 again and getting WE7:I and patching it with WEndetta which is still by the way available for download on their website.

As for PES11, the game is BRILLIANT. You have to learn how to play this game and unfortunately its not a "pick up" game like FIFA11 would be. I've seen a lot of people complain about PES11 but I can tell right of the bat, these are the new gen people who don't remember PES/WE roots.

So #1 heavyweight, undisputed p4p champion: WE7:I
As far as whats the best on next gen nowdays: I must say its PES11 and it beats FIFA11 by miles away.

Cheers

Fifa 98 road to world cup was indeed good. Very solid game back then, and I recall cool intros to games showing nicely the stadiums. Also of course Blur - Song2 theme was great as well as good menus :)

Also I don't remember which Fifa it was, MAYBE 2000 or 2002 etc. which I played a lot, in the end got just too good in it.. the funny thing about that fifa was that it had power bar for normal & through pass.
I mean in year 2002. You don't want to know how many years of Pes I was crying that god it can't be that difficult to do it to PES when it has been in very old fifa already. And by the way, it was working better in that Fifa than it's on new pes. I was easier back then to give "too short passes" for player to come forward and get.

Sensible soccer was fun game, played it with amiga. Not really a simulator but FUN. Also Goal! was great anyone remember this? A bit like Kick-Offs but newer.

Also then in my opinion Pes5,6 were great, played them completely "through" :D also I'm pretty sure their magic don't wear out no matter when you pick them up they are always FUN to play. Pes3,4 are a bit too arcade nowadays to me.
Also Pes2009, 2010 were excellent IMO (I'm not that picky it seems). PES2009 BAL I played so much that it almost makes me cry to think about it.. It was horrible, cursing to incredibly dumb AI for days in a row, breaking Pads, tables, monitors you name it they got a beating, but still the MODE idea itself was done well.

Pes 2010 heavyweight players was something I truly loved when I got used to it.. With a friend in same team Pes2010 has been one of the best, only thing to complain is a bit too passive COM attacking. I still feel that PES2010 was more solid package than 2011, as it feels a bit "betastaged".

Back to old memories, Fifa'96 the "first real fifa". We played it 3 guys in same team, and I was playing it with MOUSE xD. I remember it had a HUGE database of players, seriously. Like everyone even from Singapore league etc. We took "fouls off", and were playing it like hockey almost xD one of my friends would just make space to others by pressing the "ugly tackles" (punch, elbow etc). to opponent defenders.. Haha the memories xD

PES 3 is my fav, really really enjoyed that game!

Unfortunately football games have gone backwards the last couple of years. The more I play pes2011 the more I hate it.

To sum it up, my wife was out on a girls night last night...usually I can't wait for her to leave to start playing games...last night it was either pes2011 or watching tv...I chose watching tv.

I remember the early versions of pes you hated it at first, but after a while you couldn't put it down. These days it's the other way around. I have gone the fifa route the last 4 years, but won't this year...as fifa just bores me to death after a month as well.

It's sad really, as my favourite gaming times were with a good PES game, there is just nothing like it, nothing more fun...but today's football games are totally shit
