The Pound For Pound Best Football Games Ever Made

Emlyn Hughes International Soccer (1988) is by far the best footy game ever made for its time. It's a C64 game where you could edit names, run a club league, international cup and it included player statistics like Top Scorers.

You could dribble, head and do bicycle kicks.

I fired up my old C64 a few months ago, and tried playing this baby. It was fun, but only because it brought back memories, I would not recommend it over PES2011 in any way :p

Top 5:

5) Pes 2

4) Pes 5

3) Fifa 09

2) Pes 4

1) Pes 6

Next gen pes would barely get in top 7

We are talking about best games EVER made for their time.

PES 6 is not what I would call a genre defining game, like Sensible Soccer was, The most recent genre defining PES is ISS PRO Evolution soccer on PS1, that's what started PES, the button configurations, power meters, player specific appearances and player individuality for its time was superb and the game graphically was insanely good for its time, it was cutting edge gaming and it was a hardcore gamers game too.

--------------------------------------------------
Anyways im gonna throw something else in here as well. Virtual Striker, what did you guys think of that, yes obviously it was arcade, but it had some crazy shit in it, the graphics were brilliant, you could score great goals and the one thing I miss about the game was, the game looked at all the goals you scored and rated them, and then organized them into a sort of goal of the day compilation which it would play if you left the game at the opening menu screen.

That shit was wicked.

Hmmm. Of all the Fifa games, I would say that Fifa 99 is my favourite. EA used to put a lot more care into their games back then, not chruning out the identical looking games of recent years, with their boring spreadsheet type menus.
Then of course you have the likes of ISS Pro Evo 2 on the PS1, PES 4,5,6.
Someone before mentioned This is Football. That game was good for all the wrong reasons. Me and my bro used to play against each other a little bit. We had one rule - that I was ONLY allowed to score with my keeper. All you need to do was to sidestep/stepover your way up the pitch. I used to win like 4-0 every time.

Does anyone remember Actua Soccer? It was well liked by lots but I thought it was terrible.

How about David Beckham Soccer? Bolton had a player called Akinori Nishizowa. Now, you may be able to tell that he is Japanese. But in the game he was bald and black.... hmmmm.

That reminds me, in one of the old games (I think a Fifa one), Arnar Gunnlaugsson, another bolton player had long flowing blond hair (think Emmanuel Petit), however in real life he was bald!

Had fifa 99, not genre defining imo.

FIFA INTERNATIONAL SOCCER in 1994 is what I would call a genre defining game. Cutting edge graphics, proper 3d pitch, superb crowd sound, that game moved football games into a new era and away from the bird's eye view, tabletop football games of old like Kick off and Sensible soccer.

Hey, I'd like to chime in in this interesting subject. SWOS 96/97 was "once" considered to be the Godfather of football (soccer) games. Even to this day some folks still believe this theory. Now, back then people really didn't have much to choose from and the gaming technology was obviously limited. Retro gaming which SWOS provides is indeed fun and at that time it included things that current PES/FIFA don't even have yet. But again we are talking about retro gaming here. Same can be said about Dino Dini's titles.

I personally started playing International Superstar Soccer 64, 98 on N64. Those two games will always hold a special place in my heart. Hours and hours spent playing on cold long winters and they never got boring. This is when I fell in live with Konami.

Now to end this subject, Winning Eleven 7:INTERNATIONAL (PS2) with Italian WEndetta patch is the best football (soccer) game ever released by Konami, even to this date. I remember the old Forum vets and PES gurus on PESinsight, EvoWeb and SoccerGaming will probably agree. This game was FLAWLESS. PICTURE PERFECT. I highly doubt we will ever see another gameplay like that game had to offer. I seriously am considering buying PS2 again and getting WE7:I and patching it with WEndetta which is still by the way available for download on their website.

As for PES11, the game is BRILLIANT. You have to learn how to play this game and unfortunately its not a "pick up" game like FIFA11 would be. I've seen a lot of people complain about PES11 but I can tell right of the bat, these are the new gen people who don't remember PES/WE roots.

So #1 heavyweight, undisputed p4p champion: WE7:I
As far as whats the best on next gen nowdays: I must say its PES11 and it beats FIFA11 by miles away.

Cheers

wrong, I was a PES fanatic until the next gen came out & destroyed it...but I won't get into it in this thread as we should remember the genuinely era defining games :)

ISS, that game made me a gamer because it did to me what no other game could do.
Before that i always asked myself what is it with these guys, they are playing video games?.
WINNING ELEVEN 6 final evolution, MADE ME AN ADDICT.
don't think anything has come close yet of giving me the same feeling those 2 did, but then again i don't really have the time i used to.

The pound for pound champ has to be WE 7, also called Pes 3, for the PS2. One hell of an amazing game. Just the way every player behaved was incredible, including goalies! Some of the animations looked even more organic than the PS3 era. Everything just felt right in that game and the only thing holding it back is the small amount of teams and licenses.

Fifa 98 RTWC for the PC gets my vote for #2. You can try and guide any country you want to a World Cup! Was challenging and frustrating trying to qualify with a minnow like Vietnam. The gameplay was also really good at the time and the controls were excellent and very responsive except for the whole 1 button tricks concept. Definitely the last good Fifa until the PS3 came along.

Then we have WE 9, also called Pes 5, on the PS2. One of the most complete football games ever made. Good amount of teams and licenses. Fun and challenging gameplay. Cool new features like snow and the fairplay rule which disappeared for no fucking reason in later versions. Also introduced a bunch of new special abilities to take player individuality to a whole new level. The last great Pes game.

That's my top 3 football games ever created. I'm liking Pes 2011 the more I play it but I don't think it'll ever replace 1 of those 3 in that list. It's weird but they just don't make games like they used to.

What was the PES/WE on PS2 that had the Adidas Predator Mania boots in it? (licensed)

I remember my PS2 was chipped so I had both the WE/PES version of the same game and WE was a lot better - also remember scoring a 45 yarder with Maldini & Rui Costa was a BEAST in that game!

Just posting in Tech, watch your language, otherwise a banning will be on the way. You already know you need to cut a lot of it out, yet you're still doing it, last warning. I'm not saying you can't swear, but the amount you do though is just embarrassing quite frankly and if you talk like you do type then you must be a terrible conversationalist. Sort it out.

Best football game ever made? Tough choice. ISS Pro 98 was the one that brought me to the dance. I can't really remember what I'd class as my favourite though, I remember there was a Winning Eleven a few years back that was epic with a patch I had on it for PS2. Might have been called a Livewire patch or something. I just remember the PES and WE United teams had fire-like kits, one being yellow and red and the other grey and blue. I think they had the random selection match choice in as well where you could choose certain regions and then randomly mix them up to form a super team. 'Twas brilliant. Apart from that, they all tend to blend into one in my memory unfortunately. I do happen to remember PES2 though with the white cover I believe, and the excellent training challenges, happy days when that was released.

For me it was SWOS back in 1995, I was seriously addicted to that. Loved the managment aspect of that game. A defining moment in Football sim history.

There was a bit of a glitch in it though, my mate exploited it to its fullest extent, he sold Les Ferdinand for some absurd amount (must have been around 9m, which was alot then) and then bought him back at his original value of £750k because CPU only sold players at there default values!

Also, who remembers on the spectrum in the 80s Championship manager (or something like that)? It was essentially what evolved into Championship manager on the PC. You had a team that went into matches and the info bar flashed up the action and screamed GOAL! when you scored. Despite it being basic beyond belief it was quite a lark.
