Voted 22nd in the 250 greatest european players of all time, John Charles at 6ft 2in and 14st, used his stature to great advantage in aerial battles, but he also had a remarkably delicate touch and was never booked or sent off. He plied his trade at centre-half & centre-forward, and in 1957 was the first successful export to Italy's Serie A, where he starred for Juventus for five years. They named him "il Buon Gigante", the Gentile Giant. Many players described him as the best header of the ball they ever saw.
