I have been playing PES for years and I know it takes time getting used to a version. Last year it took some weeks to get used to the gameplay, but this is just dumb. I concede dumb goals due to the defense crumbling apart and the goalkeeper making silly slides on his side in hope to save the ball. I know the defense is supposed to be better, but I do not notice anything. Defending a cross is near impossible due to the speed the wingers have. I use X and R2. What to do about this?

don't use r2 and x, that is pressure abusing resukting in sloppy opposition goals. use r2 and square which always works.it takes like only 30 mins to master. also a hint is when using r2 and square, try using x at the same time so another player of your team will come to try help you out.
also note that pressing r2 and square will make the cpu take control of your defender's positioning so all oyu have to do is press the buttons. if you concede a lot of one on ones resullting from thorugh balls, use a low defensive line.

Anyway remember in pes 2011 when players always ran away from the ball or never cleared it. now there is zonal marking so they don't run away, they just have a slower acceleration than the attackers which is why they always play off the shoulder of your cb. make sure your defensive line is deep

Just stick at it i know its kind of a vague answer but i felt the same frustration for a good few games when conceding cheap goals! The more games i played i picked up little tips on how to defend certain situations and it really makes it an enjoyable experience......thats not to say i dont concede cheap goals anymore but for the most part the cpu have to work for there goals! AS for the cpu crossing i find if you apply teammate pressure it cuts down the space and angles for the coou to get accurate crosses in!!

It seriously is hard to defend. I mean, after a while, you notice that the best way to defend is to hardly use the x button. Hell, i hardly hold on to the R2 button at all, just a few presses here and there. Its all about positioning this year. Its difficult because, every little move the dribbler moves, you have to position yourself. If you move too much or get to close when he is in preburst mode, he just turns around and bursts pass you, or make a front pass. The key is to literally match the opposition move to move; if he slows down, use R2 to open your body up; if he starts moving, let go of R2 and match his movement; and lastly if he starts to try sprinting or a burst move, match his movement by pressing the sprint button. So in the end, you have to 1. match his movements. 2. At the same time cover passing options.
Like Abu says try using the square button for support. Only do it on the wings, because doing it in the middle will only create space for the opposition to pass.

Oh yeah one more thing, Dont trust your teammates, they back away like an idiot, and have difficulty responding to any of the opposition's off ball movement. The only solution, i recommend mastering the right stick to pick the players. The L1 change player button sometimes picks the wrong player, which kinda sucks, though much easier. Also, toning the pace down to -1 or -2 really helps. 0 is too frantic, and because of that harder to defend. Try using super cancel sometimes to defend through passes. If the ball is far away and im side by side by the defender, i push my player against his, causing him to slow down alot. Using R2 when the ball is in the air helps you modify your position, and win alot more headers too. The problem with this is it can only be effectively used if your player is relatively close to the attacker. So if some idiotic defender fails to mark a striker, your gone. Deflections, rebounds, long screamers plus a clearance that conveniently places the ball to the attacker are impossible to defend though.

Konami, why do you have to make defending so hard? Though i do admit once it clicks, it really is fun and challenging.

it's not about positioning his year because if the opposition have the ball andyo press r2 and square, the computer gets your defender into a better position which annoys the attcker and he is forced to dispossess or pass back. before all you lot complain about defending - try it!!!!!!

Defending is awesome. I find it fun and realistic. I honestly don't see the problems with it. Even on the hardest levels I don't leak goals, but I do struggle to score goals myself. Now if you wanna talk about shocking defending play FIFA 12, the defending is appauling, it makes PES defending seem amazing and makes you apprieciate it.

^^^ definitely they can be pants...what's infuriating is at times the AI will pull off an amazing save and then at others it's like an u8 keeper.

What gets me at times are some of the shit OG's I score (I've taken clear assist off) due to my player not getting the command to kick the ball out and will do a retarded run intO the net, just have to laugh

Stick with it, duder. You'll quickly realize the lanes that the CPU uses on counters, etc. They'll still score on some stupid sh*t from time to time, but nothing like your first 10 or so games.

Drop a level to regular my friend and learn the game. If you base your conclusions on playing weak ML team (which does stupid things at times indeed) switch to something less frustrating like MU or Barca and learn.
