It seriously is hard to defend. I mean, after a while, you notice that the best way to defend is to hardly use the x button. Hell, i hardly hold on to the R2 button at all, just a few presses here and there. Its all about positioning this year. Its difficult because, every little move the dribbler moves, you have to position yourself. If you move too much or get to close when he is in preburst mode, he just turns around and bursts pass you, or make a front pass. The key is to literally match the opposition move to move; if he slows down, use R2 to open your body up; if he starts moving, let go of R2 and match his movement; and lastly if he starts to try sprinting or a burst move, match his movement by pressing the sprint button. So in the end, you have to 1. match his movements. 2. At the same time cover passing options.
Like Abu says try using the square button for support. Only do it on the wings, because doing it in the middle will only create space for the opposition to pass.
Oh yeah one more thing, Dont trust your teammates, they back away like an idiot, and have difficulty responding to any of the opposition's off ball movement. The only solution, i recommend mastering the right stick to pick the players. The L1 change player button sometimes picks the wrong player, which kinda sucks, though much easier. Also, toning the pace down to -1 or -2 really helps. 0 is too frantic, and because of that harder to defend. Try using super cancel sometimes to defend through passes. If the ball is far away and im side by side by the defender, i push my player against his, causing him to slow down alot. Using R2 when the ball is in the air helps you modify your position, and win alot more headers too. The problem with this is it can only be effectively used if your player is relatively close to the attacker. So if some idiotic defender fails to mark a striker, your gone. Deflections, rebounds, long screamers plus a clearance that conveniently places the ball to the attacker are impossible to defend though.
Konami, why do you have to make defending so hard? Though i do admit once it clicks, it really is fun and challenging.
