Top 10: Things that will make PES 2009 great.

Got this from Video Gamer

This might be old to some but anyway

10. Get rid of the invisible barriers for throw-ins. This has been a bug-bear of mine throughout the series. When taking throw-ins, your player seems to have this magical bubble around him that prevents receiving and defending players from getting too close. This isn't how they do it in real life, and so this isn't how it should be in PES, the most realistic football simulation ever. Get rid Konami.

9. Sort the music out.

PES has always had cheesy music, but PES 2008 has possibly the worst, cheesiest, cringe-worthy music ever heard in a video game. What you get is a small box in the top-right corner which details the song name and the genre, from salsa to drum and bass. Some of the tracks are so mind-numbingly bad, that we've had to turn the background music off entirely just to end the pain. Let me give you some sample lyrics from a piece of original music in the game (you have to imagine this with a Status Quo-type punk rock riff): "Football, soccer, football, soccer, football, soccer, all around the world. Football, soccer, football, soccer, football, soccer, Greatest game of all!" This isn't licensed music, this is god-awful music. Konami, please, do something.

8. Tweak the keepers.

Some players criticised Pro Evolution Soccer 6 for the way keepers seemed to suffer from Paul Robinson syndrome - spilling the ball at strikers' feet whenever a shot comes in. While they've tweaked the keepers in PES 2008 so that it happens less often, it's still heart in the mouth time whenever the opposition let fly from mid to close range. Whatever happened to Dave 'Safe Hands' Seaman?

7. Don't break play up with changes in camera angles.

One of the great improvements in PES 2008 is the ability to take quick free kicks and for refs to be able to dish out cards without the game cutting to a different camera angle. If you have the game set to wide view (of course you do), and you hack Cristiano Ronaldo from behind the ref will trotter over and dish out a card without the camera leaving that view. It's so great that we want it extended to non-shooting free kicks and goal kicks. There's no need for the 'behind the player' camera angle in these circumstances, so keeping the wide view while the keeper trots off to get the ball from a ball boy or a player passing the ball to another so he can take a free-kick in his own half would be fine. Not just fine, it would be fantastic.

6. Skill-based penalties.

As far as we can tell, there's no skill to penalties in PES at all. If you're the keeper you guess the direction and hope for the best. If you're shooting, you press the direction and hope it doesn't hit the post or go wide. While real life penalties are somewhat of a lottery, there's obviously skill involved. We'd love to see Konami introduce a penalty system that somehow took skill to master. How about a return to the way it was in ISS 64 with the boxes?. Oh, and Konami, get rid of those dodgy new keeper camera angles please.

5. Make and share videos of your matches.

Halo 3 has taken game editing to a whole new level with the ability to save videos of matches and share them with friends. How great would it be if you could do that with PES? You could win a seven-goal thriller with your mate then watch it from the perspective of a floating camera that you were in total control of. Then you could share your films with your friends through Xbox Live or PlayStation Network. You could even save your favourite goals or funny moments, edit it together so it looks really cool and then submit it for consideration on Konami's Goal of the Month competition, which everyone can check out through XBL or PSN. How great would that be? Come on Konami, we know you can do it.

4. Overhaul the online offering.

PES 2008 only allows 1 vs 1 matches online, which is disappointing. We'd love to see that increased for the next game, even if it is only 2 vs 2. We'd also love the opportunity to create private leagues with your friends, a bit like The Sun's Fantasy Football. And how about PlayStation Eye and Xbox LIVE Vision support so that you can see your opponent's reaction when you score a last minute winner, and they can see you jumping around the room and screaming your head off? And what about the lag? Playing PES 2008 online is nowhere as smooth an experience as it is offline. While this situation may improve with patches and updates, and we know that completely lag free play is impossible, we'd love Konami to improve the situation for PES 2009.

3. More official licenses and more teams.

It's a question of taste as to whether you like to play in real kits, in real stadiums, with players that aren't named Gills and teams that aren't named North London FC. Personally, I'm a big fan of official licenses in football games. It's one of the best features about FIFA 08 and something that I've always felt adds authenticity to the match experience. It seems like Konami has taken a sideways step with the English Premier League rather than a forward one. Official licenses for Manchester United and Arsenal have been replaced with Newcastle and Tottenham. We know it's very difficult, given EA Sports' exclusive deal, but we can only hope that the situation will improve with PES 2009. We'd also like to see more teams, both national and club. How about the German, Scottish and Portuguese leagues?

2. Improve the graphics.

Now that we're well into next-gen gaming, there's no real excuse why PES' visuals aren't top notch. While player animations and faces (some) are great, playing the game in the main wide angle simply looks terrible when compared with FIFA 08. We're not asking for much, since it's gameplay that really counts, but we'd like to see the crowd receive a lick of paint, the menus re-thought, player kits more real looking and the overall presentation dragged into the next generation. We love the classic PES animation, but a few tweaks here and there wouldn't go amiss.

1. Don't overhaul the game engine. We love PES.

We love it like a fine vintage wine that gets better with age while keeping the essence of what makes it taste so good. All we're really asking for is subtle changes, changes that will give that awe-inspiring gameplay a next-generation, high definition sheen. For years PES has been one of the greatest multiplayer games in the world. The feeling of satisfaction you get from scoring a goal in PES, be it a tap-in at the end of an Arsenal-esque 20-pass move or a Frank Lampard scorcher, is unlike anything in gaming. It's about as close as us mortals are going to get to that uncontrollable burst of emotion professional footballers experience week in, week out. We've been enjoying those feelings on a virtual basis for years, and we want to keep enjoying them for many years to come.

What would you like to see in PES 2009? Let us know in the comments section below.

I'd add a couple of things to that list such as:

1. More/real stadiums with realistic atmospheres
By this i mean stadiums for at least all main club and inernational teams with their relevant atmospheres. For example, when AC Milan would be playing Inter Milan you'd sense the tension in the atmosphere and have a 'real' type of atmosphere such as flares etc all happening in the San Siro. And when Bolton are playing Portsmouth, there'd be a less tense atmosphere etc. I know this is a bit adventurous but I think this would add loads to the game as it would create a kind of pressure on the player.

2. Tweak the passing system
The passing system seems to be 75% of the way there. I'd like to see some adjustments though. The main adjustment being that the game detects who you're obviously trying to pass to. I hate when I try to pass to a team mate and cos he's slightly distanced it end up being a weak pass in a general direction to no-one which goes from a throw in. Maybe a more intelligent passing system would be better as these 'passes' to nobody don't happen in real life.

3. Add skillsets
Each player should have skillsets. There could be general ones for most players but could have added specific sets for players with high and individual skill levels like C.Ronaldo, Messi, Ronaldinho, Kaka etc. This is possible as wrestling games are notorious for allocating special skillsets to each individual differing from everyone else. It'd make the game more realistic too. I think this would add to the attacking part of the game as different players would attack in different ways and it'd add variety to the game and keep the 'player' on their toes and would need to actually learn the skills and attacking style of teams.

4. Tweak the AI system
Have the AI of the game take 'true' managerial decisions. For example, if the computer is losing 3-1 and it's late in the second half, they would sub a defender for a forward and change formation to a more attacking style, or whatever would be appropriate to push for goals for that specific team. This is what happens in real football and would keep the leading team guessing and challenge them til the final whistle.

5. Tweak the defending system
Where I actually like a lot of the defending aspect of PES 2008 as it challenges the player, it still needs tweaking. I think it is vital to add more defending varieties. At the moment, there is a sliding tackle option, a press X to wrestle the ball option or hold R2 to stand off. I think real life defending has more variety and perhaps more intelligent sutomatic interceptions and covering defenders for a 'player' should be employed.

6. Get rid of generic scoring methods
These make the game unrealistic at the moment. By generic scoring methods, I mean things like the annoying cut back and the ease of dribbling the keeper etc. These should me more sporadic and random and happen on rare occasions not 99% of the time.

7. Make keepers more intelligent
Keepers should be made more intelligent, in particular in one-on-ones where the striker always either dribbles past or gets the penalty. What happened to Schmeichel style goalkeeping? Keepers should also parry the ball less as the amount of parrying is unrealistic.

8. Include lower leagues
This would make PES dominate over FIFA as you could then have true ML careers going from the lower leagues up to the England League. This is what is the most appealign factor about FIFA and why it is still on the heels of PES. It's time Konami stopped being greedy and invested some money in gaining licenses to use these lower leagues as it make them money by the ton-load in future as this factor alone would convert huge number of FIFA players.

I don't know if konami would do that.

10. Get rid of the invisible barriers for throw-ins.
Yes. This is great, as it would mean 9/10 times you'll have to go for a long throw in, and it introduces SKILL!
9. Sort the music out.
Pro Evo's music has been psychedelic garbage. Always. But if you get FIFA, they have some alright tracks, but 70% ish is R n B stuff that is pain to the ears. BUT they show common sense. R3 and the track is changed. Pro Evo should do something similar - I suggest the Select button/XBox equivalent. But I'd rather Konami spend money on gameplay instead of licensed songs.
8. Tweak the keepers.
Keepers should be easier to beat in the air, the backpass rule should be enforced better, and if it's straight at the keeper, a non-catch should be very rare, unless the shot is absolutely blasted.
7. Don't break play up with changes in camera angles.
You need the camera behind the taker with free kicks and goal kicks if you plan to aim it a particular direction (instead of just Aladycing it up the pitch towards Big Man Up Front). I always play every single dead ball as a pass though, unless it's a corner or a shooting chance.
6. Skill-based penalties.
Definately. As it stands, it's just a lottery, which is awful really.
5. Make and share videos of your matches.
I'dlove to be able to make a highlights package of my games, or at least save the 6 highlight one Konami do at the end of the game.
4. Overhaul the online offering.
I don't have online.
3. More official licenses and more teams.
Pretty hard, The FA has contracted themselves to EA so Konami can only ever have 2 Premiership teams maximum. But at least have good teams, not Spurs and Newcastle!!! (Although it is good how even these two are on Pro Evo)
2. Improve the graphics.
The graphics are alright, it's the editing options that make no use whatsoever of the graphics.
1. Don't overhaul the game engine. We love PES.
Some aspects could be tweaked. Actually I'll rephrase that. Change the defending. It would be nice to have defending that kinda reflects real life, as opposed to Wild West saloon doors.

The AI does that already. They keep changing to three in the back when I'm up by two goals or more, then I wind up winning by five or six! :shocking:

yeh nevermind the no licenses for england but i would like a really comprehensive in game edit function. Surely will spark more activity around the forum PES related.

It also needs to bring back that pes 6 national thing were u select ur national team

some good ideas but i think it just needs minor things like -

- PES shop return
- scenario mode return
- full edit return
- more players online, so 4 v4
- online leagues
- master league - able to move clubs (like FM), multiplayer (like FM)
- Unl;imited saved goals (save online goals as well)
- career mode (ie. take one player and train and improve and move from club to club), this was in a previous version and was really good fun

It needs a lot more than 10 things sorted before I'll buy it.

Couldn't agree more. 10 things are not nearly enough to sort out Konami's PES. At the very least, there should be 20 things.

In short, Konami NEEDS to; completely change the crappy gameplay of PES 2008, graphics can be far better (although they are already good), Internet Play must be playable, REPLACE the OLD stats and special skills system - with a better NEXT GEN system of skills, greatly improve the commentary, and a few unimportant things such as licenses, etc, etc..

However, Does Konami haves anything up their sleeve?? By the looks of it - It seems that Konami cannot cope with what the PS3 can offer.

I think the throw-in bubble problem is annoying, but what's more annoying is the fact that each throw in has to take forever to happen. In real life, people can quickly throw the ball in as if it never went out in the first place. It's similar to how you can do a tap free kick now (though doesn't seem to allow it when we actually want it) so why not throw ins as well? Give us 2-3 seconds to decide if we want a quick throw in.
