Appreciate if someone could advise under the player setting there is this sign, not sure what it is for.

The is a a manual sign on the left and S-Auto on the right and a lot of white lines in between.

I was given to understand that it helps to control the player movement. I have tried both extremes and I could not detect any difference in the player movement.

Could anyone advise?

The bars represent how the switching between players is done (L1). All on the right makes it more automatically done for you and all on the left makes it all manually done by yourself.
I use full manual.

Thanks for the replies however if these buttons are meant for switching of players, is there another button that I could use to improve the speed of my players' response. Eg. when I hurried to press the square button so that my defender can clear the ball quickly, the response somehow seems late and the ball was intercepted.

Nope nothing to improve speed.
Maybe press it before he gets to it.
Try Circle to clear it sometimes too.

I don't think anyone is immune to making that extra step mistake. Almost all of the defenders are capable of it in my experience.

Any suggestions for who won't?

I'm glad i read this thread, i never knew what that was for and i always have it a maximum auto setting, nice one Zyg i'll have to change it now. I'm kinda thinking it'll make it alot easier to change to a different player. Usually i'll press L1 hoping that it'll change to the player closest to the ball but instead changes to someone else miles away.

Samuel, Nesta, Cannavarro, etc

I used Babangida's Exel file from showusmiracle to find defenders with the highest response and defense figures, any of the top ten from that will be better, though as you say, none are immune.

i have tried it fully manual now and switching players seems a bit easier. I never really knew what is was for before i read this thread.

I have it in the middle (default)

It doesn't seem to make much of a difference.

I reckon it was a waste of time to have so many bars. There should just be Automatic, manual and in the middle.
