Im not really the best at this game, but i see alot of people on here and pesfan that says about how they win all the time on 6*, which i cant even do on 3/4. Would constantly playing on 5* (havent unlocked 6 yet) with an average team against chelsea/barca/milan etc would that make me better at the game?

Also i need some tips, if anyone has some general tips on starting to play on 5/6* i would be very greatful, any usefill skills? defending/attacking techniqies etc i would be very grateful.

thanks to anyone who helps.

When playing leagues I prefer 5* cuz on 6* the AI teams will score more against each other and the elite clubs like Chelsea, AC Milan, and Real Madrid will consistently go a season with only 1 loss and a 3 goal per game average, which is unrealistic. 5* is more realistic cuz crappy teams will often make mistakes like in real life, whereas on 6* they're incredibly sharp and know exactly what they want to do. Doesn't mean u can't beat them as I can go a 38 league match season with only 1 or 2 losses with a good team like Juventus, but its just more fun and realistic on 5* so just stick with it.

Ok I'll share the way I play against the AI and hope u'll improve.

1. Pick a style. Defensive? Attacking? Possession? English style?(long balls)

Defensive: Go to Formation->Team Settings->Auto Defend. This is how Liverpool plays under Benitez. Sit back and try to hit on the counter. Score 1 goal and your team will defend like mad throughout the match.

Attacking: Formation->Team Settings->Auto Attack. This is how I personally play with a good attacking team which also has confident defending. I play as ManU, Juve, and Barca. Puts all the pressure on the opponents half, not giving them a second to relax. If I'm up by 2-0 I might switch back to normal or Auto Defense if my opposition is strong, but this way is tough as you'll just sit back and absorb every attack they throw at you, so you'll be stuck in your own half if they decide to push.

Imo you should never play Normal Attack/Defend on 10min, cuz u won't put enough pressure on their defense, u won't have enough men to support u. So if you win it'll be something like 1-0 or 2-0 most of the times, even against crap teams.

Possession football: good for technically gifted teams with all short players (under 180cm). South American leagues play this way, as do many teams in La Liga. You'll rarely see long balls, trying to walk the ball up from the back. Keep passing it back and forth, all around the pitch and never make a pass that has a chance of being intercepted in midfield or your own half. In their goal area is ok.

English style: good for tall and strong teams, like most English teams. Throw in frequent long balls from the back aiming towards your tall CFs. Get the gauge close to the halfway line and your CF will get it most of the time. If you're on the flank in your own half , and you see your SMF/WF being only marked by 1 defender, wait til their radars become 1, then press :L1:+:triangle: then watch your fast SMF/WF take the ball and send in a nice cross or dribble in for goal.

Crossing: u shouldn't hold a direction if you want someone in the box to receive the cross. Always let go of direction b4 pressing :circle: and you'll send in a perfect cross (with a good crosser) to your CF. Aim towards outside the box and thats where it'll go, to an AMF or CMF for a volley. Aim across the pitch and thats where it'll go, to the other flank.

Dribbling: never ever use :R1: during attack unless you are behind the defence and the space between u and the closest defender is about 2cm on screen. Even then only use :R1: for 2 touches then slow down and smoke the keeper. Players with good dribbling+dribbling speed will push away from the defense automatically in close quarters. It doesn't seem like they will but trust me, use Ronaldinho or Eto'o, run up to defender without :R1: or :R2:, then when your close go down right or up right (if your playing left to right) and they'll suddenly have a big boost of speed and kick the ball further.
Only use :R1: for defense if you lost your man and he's racing towards goal, but this shouldn't happen if your defense is well organized.

Last but not least, don't take off star players if your losing or tied. You may think that they're crap cuz their stamina bar is in the red zone, but your subsitute won't have nearly as many stars or none at all, and even if he's 100% fresh, he might not be as consistent, he'll blow chances, and he defenitely will not run rings around a tired defense, unless the player ur subbing on is better than the player coming off. Check my other thread about fatigue for more info on this subject.

Hope that helps, enjoy the game. If u need any help in other areas just feel free to ask me.

Thanks. Just trying to help the newcomers fully enjoy the most realistic footy game

Here's my other thread on the truth about fatigue. Another long read but useful I hope

oops forgot the mention the importance of short through balls. Once you're outside the AI's box, u should mainly pass with :triangle: to split the defence. Very very effective with players who have Passing, Playmaking, or both. I generally just spray through balls into the area and sooner or later a striker will grab onto it, especially a fast striker like Eto'o or a quick striker (good response) like Van Nistelrooy or Trezeguet.

Anytime. So much information I keep leaving stuff out. I play on Semi-Automatic strategies cuz I believe the AI is better at fully utilizing this than a human is. They're quicker at changing it and more adept at picking the best situation to use them.

Also playing on wide camera is imortant and manual player switching.

Oh and let go of a direction and press :R2: to trap the ball. This makes the player face towards goal to make a better shot or pass. I use this most of the time in midfield when making a pass, or with a good dribbler in close quarters can get pass a defender.

Stormrider - You say that the AI is better in some occassions than controlling things manually, but Ive noticed when playing against people that your full backs can become very exposed. I find that my full backs will sneak up the field and most good players will exploite this by passing to their wingers who have got behind my defense.

I know what u mean I think its a bug. Its really annoying when ur full backs wonder into central park and more often than not on the opposite flank. Camoranesi loves to do this for Juventus even tho I don't have change sides as a strategy, leaving my right side quite exposed, but lucky Juve has so much quality that Emerson will fill the gap in time for Camoranesi to get back.
If they're on the flank then I'll usually take control of my full back, and let the AI defend in the center, pressing :square: when I have to or when I wanna be aggressive and steal the ball.

Here have some more tips

If u happen to find your player wide open on a flank, try to get level with him and press :triangle: in his direction, then hold :R1:. The receiving player will jump over the ball or move to the side and then run after it again. U can keep holding :R1: if no defenders ahead or let go if you're blocked.

If you're going for through balls and 50/50 balls, there's no need to hold :R1:. Newcomers will be tempted, but holding :R1: is actually very bad. There's a slight lag and the defender will start closing in on u really fast against a through ball or u'll end up losing the 50/50 or committing a foul. U'll also have less control if u happen to get the ball. Even if it seems like u wont' make it, try not to resist as u often will make it. A strong player will be able to hold up very well if u resist :R1:.

When defending, use :square: for quick clearances and powerful headers. :X: headers just won't make it far enough. If you have enough time for a good clearance, hold :L1:+:circle:. This will send in a long cross which ends up on your CFs chest or sometimes behind their defense.

Never underestimate the power of R2 if u wanna be good in PES5. I use R2 to win balls as well as dribble. Try chasing down the opposing attacker, get infornt or right beside him and tapur R2 to face the striker, he just runs into u and loses the ball. or when under loads of pressure in ur box just keep moving your players close to the attacker and tap R2 they just bag them off without conceeding penalties. I havent used X for a long long time since i discovered it. Needs alot ofpractise and concentration but when executed feels sweet watching your friends face as his player is just barged of the ball or he loses every 50-50 chance. Priceless

^ Yes R2 is a very vital tool when you are, defending for pro veterans. It allows you to hold up the striker so other defenders maybe able to get back and provide cover.
