Wrestling Video Games (WWE '13)

BELIEVE
I'm guessing I'm not the only one having an absolute nightmare with the online WWE '12 servers?

I'm not even overly fussed about playing online to be honest - but I do want to download other people's Superstar and Arena creations. The trouble is, I can't seem to search for more than 10 seconds without being kicked from online, simply because the WWE '12 server can't remain connected. The search function 'never' seems to work when I input a Superstar's name. I would love to be able to find good CAWs of Jinder Mahal, the Hart Foundation, the Rockers, among others, yet I can't even use the search function correctly.

As truly great as the gameplay is for WWE '12, the online server absolutely fucking sucks.

Warzone was shit. I couldn't wait for it to come (another US import) but when I got it I quickly realized it was inferior to World Tour, and then Revenge came out later in the year and just confirmed my preference.

Bishop I'm disappointed in you playing this wad. We shouldn't have to settle for less.

The server has been shite since release. Even before general release there were problems meaning the amount of traffic isn't an excuse. The patch is expected in a few weeks so hopefully it'll all be fixed but knowing them I don't hold much confidence.

Hunter, if you want to have longer match you'll have to go to each wrestlers attributes (mainly strike and grapple power) and lower them quite significantly, as well as finisher/weapon damage. You can leave stuff like speed, charisma, strike/grapple defence alone I would think. It should make a big difference. Of course you'd need Fan Axxess for that.

Barn, I know it isn't great but I just want to have a decent wrestling game available to me on ps3, not having to hook up my n64 everytime I want to play. If I wasn't able to use/download old school wrestlers and rings I wouldn't have bought this.

Just placed the disc in the PS3 for the first time looking forward to seeing the gameplay but I've been hit with an update of 249MB! Bloody hell. Even on my broadband speed this is taking fooking ages. What the hell did they include in the update?!

What. The. Fuck. Did. They. Do. To. The. Grappling. System. It makes no bleedin' sense, you end up moving through chains of nothing. It won't execute a move.

Also, what the bloody hell has happened to the blocking?! I'm hammering R2 and L2 and nothing.

Pah.

BELIEVE
The gameplay is WWE '12's best asset. It's just excellent - and addictive.

I've only been playing Singles matches, and a Tables match (just a few minutes ago) since I got the game, and I've been having a blast. It's still early doors, but I'd consider WWE '12 possibly the best sports games I've played in years. The only rival is the NBA 2K series.

Can't block attacks and I can't work out why I'm not able to execute grapple moves. The controls listed in the manual do not appear to work correctly.

Oh man, the manual, and even controls tutorial in the pause menu are pretty poor.

Reversing attacks is honestly not too tricky. You'll get the hang of it. It's solely down to timing - quite like real life in a way. It's all about hitting RT (R2) at the precise and correct time - aided by the on-screen prompt.

It's a matter of just playing the game more and forcing yourself to adapt to the controls. I hadn't played a WWE video game since the days of PS2, and even though the controls manual was a little vague - I jumped into playing, testing things out. I lost the first few matches, but it's a learning curve - albeit not a massively tough one to succeed with, but a tough one to master as far as memorising moves of a particular wrestler, and which grapple buttons are associated with their moveset.

Have you tried looking on YouTube for hints and tips? I imagine there's some videos online to look through that will be of use. I watched WWE '12 matches using YouTube in the weeks leading up to receive the game. I watched purely for entertainment purposes mind, but I also got a feel for the game I think, without actually holding a controller.

I've started reversing moves but the timing has to be razor sharp, almost to the point of pressing the buttons before the they appear on the screen.

I'm finding the grappling bizarre, I press X + left analogue stick in a direction and sometimes I break into a submission. I've looked up the controls online to make sure the manual isn't telling me cobblers.

I think as you said it comes down to practise, I'd really like a tutorial mode on the game. The last WWE game I played grapples were executed via the right analogue stick. I've not used the targeting system yet, still getting to grips with everything else, but suffice to say I find it frustrating how if I fail to block an early attack by the CPU I'm fucked, they hit me with move after move. I don't understand the point of holding X during a pin, it doesn't do anything, I fill the meter and still lose

They got rid of the analogue stick grappling to change it back to the preferred face buttons. Anyway, you have your four types of lock up grapples - I don't really know the difference between up and x, left and x and right and x, but down and x makes you go for a back move. Once you're in these grapple states, you then choose up, down, left, right and x to execute a move.

Eventually, you'll be reversing near to everything and will wish the reversal window was shorter to give you more of a challenege ;)

You can fiddle with the reversal settings can't you in the Options. I've not really had a good look at it yet, but I may do so soon enough. It's nice that there's more to alter than just 'Easy, Normal. Hard, Legendary'.

I had my first Tag Team match last night. It was so much damn fun. I was the team of Dolph Ziggler and Jack Swagger, with Vickie Guerrero in my corner - facing off against Zack Ryder and Sheamus. The match lasted longer than a usual Singles match of course given there's a fresher man usually available to tag. The dynamics of the match were just great to play around with, and the corner double teams are great too.

I think I'm going to have a match now with Air Boom. I'm not sure who I'll face off against - I need to download Hunico, Epico, Primo and Rosa Mendes. :D

I'm guessing this Road To Wrestlemania mode will see me playing as an in-game character throughout? It's a bit of a shame that we can't adjust the Superstar's settings to keep things current. For example, I'm Sheamus (I guess everyone starts off as Sheamus anyway), and my first match is against Daniel Bryan. Except being Sheamus, I'm booed, whilst Bryan is cheered. If it was up to date, that would of course now be the other way around. It makes the story feel even less real when the Superstars themselves are dated.

I guess Kane's new look may be a possibility for WWE '12 then. Hopefully they can make a Jericho character, but I doubt it.

From what I've heard, it's the classic Kane look, which is a better choice anyway. Won't be any Jericho.

I'm hoping this WWE Showdown game they've got lined up is a legends game, though wouldn't be that excited because it is THQ/Yukes afterall.

I doubt it. Had it been classic Kane he'd have been added from the beginning, just like last year and the previous years before that.

I'm not expecting Jericho, but if this Kane rumour is true, then you never know.

Is this the big news in January they were talking about?

They ruled out the new masked Kane so I reckon it is the old school look.

They did mention something 'old school', and this is an upcoming game. They can't be talking about that piece of shit WWE Brawl game as being old school, just a mess of a beat 'em up, as it has current wrestlers in it.

Well that's changed then, because it previously just said The Rock.

A little unfair if you ask me, given the whole idea of Fan Axxess is to be given access to all DLC - the omission of The Rock and Miz's attire is completely understandable given they were pre-order exclusives in most areas.
