xbox and ps2

hi people.
i got a ps2 and my friends got xbox and i wanna play online with my friend, can we both each other, even thougt he has an xbox.
also i bought a ps2 to xbox controller converter, it works fine, but i cannot change all the button on xbox, anyone know of this problems plz help.
i wanted to buy a xbox, but i hate the controller, dats why i wanna play ps2 with xbox, as i cannot afford to buy a xbox 360.
plz plz plz help.

You cannot play each other if you are on different consoles.

If I remember correctly, I'm pretty sure the only button you can't change is L1 and L2.
