Yelp - Expert Level too hard to beat

I have been playing Master league for the last 6 month and 1 won the English league with Man Blue Team. Top scorer Tevez. Started second season and it was becoming very easy and slight boring as i won most of games easily (beating Man United, Barca etc). So i changed the settings from regular to expert and i started to loose each and every game i played.

I play 4-4-2 with Tevez and Trezequet as CF. Most of the other players in team have 82+ avg ratings as well.
Tactics , i use opp side + counter.
I use 85 for

Defend, i use X and R1 to pressure and [] sometimes to get second player support + support range + switch = 80
pressure 75
compact 60
defense line 25

Does not work well, as the other teams keep passing swiftly and i just keep running after ball. Most of times, player are too fast for my defenders and keep running behind them or with them. Use 'O' to slide but get cards too soon and too many.

Question 1: HOW TO DEFEND ????

When i get the ball, i try to keep passing (X or O or L1+X) and it does not work well either. Other team player get the ball while passing. Also I use R1 for fast runs but CF/SS get our run very easily.

Question 2: What am i missing ????

I can't really tell what is wrong or missing because the settings differ based on how you play. I play at Expert level and I'm thrashing the CPU so let me see if my advice will be helpful for you.

I've been playing PES/WE since forever so i guess i'm used to the style of the game. Which is fast. Very fast. So I place a lot of emphasis on making sure players have good teamwork and that my strikers and attacking midfielders are fast with good passing abilities.

My style (for PES10) is to pass the ball as quickly as possible to my CF/SS (Vucinic/Totti) and get them to turn and face the defenders. Once my SMFs (Hazard/Taddei) catch up with the play, I work the ball out to them to swing a get into a crossing position and swing it in. I also have a CMF(De Rossi) and a DMF (Rodwell) to pick up any loose balls or clearances and have a pot at goal.

1) Try not to always use R1 to run cos you'll move too fast across the pitch and either run out os space or can't find a team mate to pass to. Use it in bursts to get clear of defenders then pass and move again until there's an opening.

2) Settings:
Attacking style 100 (moves ahead of the man with the ball). This will ensure your players pour foward whenever you attack.
Support 90 - close but not so close that if the ball is cleared far away you are not in position to retrieve it.
Pressure 65 - Not too high because then your players will be all pulled out of position.
Defence line 60 - Keep a higher line to catch the cpu offside more easily without you doing anything. Make sure you have a CB who is a DF Leader and good teamwork amongst your DEFs to pull this off automatically.

3) Players
GK - Absolutely essential you get a good GK: With Man City, Given should be one of the best but if not, try buying Joe Hart/ Cristiano/ Ospina. My GK is Doni and I cannot remember how many point blank saves he's pulled off to save my skin. Play him as Balanced not Defence-minded. This will make him stand a bit further from the goal line and enables him to come out faster to gather the ball.

CF - Make sure you get someone who has
a) good heading abilities to make the most of crosses
b) high Aggression + Reaction skill card to ensure he gets into the box often
c) high response to get to loose balls
Tevez and Trezeguet seem pretty good but neither is a target man. You still have Adebayor? Make sure you play him, heard he will become a fantastic player after a few seasons. If not, try buying Lukaku/ Bendtner/ Hulk/ Acquafresca. I play with a Dribbler (Totti/ Menez) as SS and an out and out striker (Vucinic/ Lukaku) as CF. My SS usually has high Dribbling speed(accuracy not neccessary but can be helpful) and will bring the ball upfield towards the opposing 18-yard box then pass to a player in better positions. My CF will attack anything that comes into the box OR take long range shots.

4) Defending
Never commit too many players on 1 opposition player. Try using SQUARE to send a CPU player to pressure the opposition while your controlled player keeps up with the play just a little distance away, moving in only when there is a clear chance of taking the ball or clearing it (if they are going to cross, don't try to block the cross, instead use your controlled player to move into the penalty box to head the ball away). I guess the most important thing is anticipating what the CPU will do. They almost always only have a few moves that they will employ so watch for it. There's no substitute for experience here.

Tip: Buying young players that can grow usually works better then buying established players cos if you ignore the stats, the young players will play BETTER than what their stats show. I.e.: They perform to potential, NOT to the stats. Which is how I like it. Only trouble is the Form of most of them is pretty low, meaning you are never sure if they can perform in every game.

That's all I can say for now. WIll keep you updated if I remember more. Best of luck mate! Let me know how it works out for you! =)

In reply to iammark.

I did all tactics changes as per your comment, and it did help. But i am still having problem.

Attack:
When i have the ball, i try to run and pass it to another player if someone approaches, but the pass most of times goes to opposite teams player and they have a free run.
When i run slow & controlled (R2) opposite team take the ball and run .
When i run fast, they anyway get the ball.
Dribble, when dribbling , they easily attack with 2 player and get the ball.
Let me know some good way to attack please.

Some good dribbling techniques for PS3. Some good way to pass in way towards opposite goal from my side ( X does not work great at all).

Hi, if you were playing against your mates, do you also use this setup ?, if so do you get some good wins from it.

Thanks. :)

1) Defend by THINKING more and slide tackling less. Stay on your feet and learn how to nip in and steal the ball or shadow an attacker to guide him away from dangerous areas.

When I first started on expert I hated it. Thought the game was rigged against me, but it aint. You just have to perserver for a bit.
