This may have been raised before (and if so, I apologise, but I couldn't see it), but i think it's a pity that PES has still not managed to make the move to HD, even though it's been officially a next gen game now for the last two versions.

If my memory serves me correctly, I believe FIFA has managed it for the last two games. Given that a significant number (if not the majority) of people now have next gen consoles and HD TVs, this really should be rectified ASAP if the series wants to be seen as representing the cutting edge of football gaming (as it should)...

i'm sure both PES 09 and Fifa 09 are 720p. It's the graphics that were the difference.

I'm no wizard on HD though :S

zanger is right Fifa is also 720p. Only like a handful of games are true 1080p and I don't think that'll ever change. I think cuz 1080p uses about triple the size of 720p. Would be sweet if 2010 was 1080p with no lag though :)

^1080P is usually referred to console owners and hdtv's. For PC's they say 1920*1080 usually. ;)

1080p is very hard work, you have alot of texture rendering, pixel shading is hard especially for a game that comes out every year, to achieve 60fps in 1080p is very hard, fifa is 720p as well as pes is 720p,

1080 or even 1080i at least!

^ But I agree with 'theman', for a game that comes out every year and always tries to improve, it would be very difficult to get 1080p or 1080i!

HD really means the quality of picture not the resolution but it has been synonimous to the resolution since HD TV's have been in place.

The main reason for most X360 and PS3 games being stuck at 720p is due to them both using 4 year old Graphics card technology although with a few tweaks.

One of the reasons I always get the PC version.

not necessarily true about the four year old graphics card technology making an impact on 1080p, its about the sdk used by konami, in all honesty it is years old and needs revamping, but the problem is that they have only got 1 year to make a whole new game, so then konami have to port players from previous iterations of pes. Look at gran turismo 5 prologue, its in 1080p but it took 3-4 years to make it as well as the proper gran turismo 5 which will take longer,
another problem is the frame rate, konami have always messed up with frame rates especially in pes 2008, so it will be hard for them to create 1080p with a smooth 60fps.

I agree its not all down to the graphics card and you're totally right about Konami's sdk especially in PES2008 but FIFA 2009 and the majority of next gen console games run at 720p simply because the graphics horsepower isn't there to get playable framerates at 1080p with the majority of demanding games. As a PC onwer I have seen both problems in games. The difference in framerates between an nVidia 7800 and an ATi Radeon 4870 is huge at 1920 x 1200 but have also seen bad programming effect framerates as in Deadspace and GTA IV which force you to turn down graphics detail or switch to 1280 x 800.

720p is better for sports and games than 1080i. For everything else they're practically the same.

It's not all about framerate either. 1080p would require a lot more disc space than 720p. I think we'll see more in a few years, when it'll be common to sell multi disc games, but I don't think sports games will ever wanna go multi disc which means 1080p footy on PS3 is prolly never gonna happen.

Agree with all that. Most of the time in PES you're viewing it from wide or broadcast which negates the advantage of 1080i/p anyway plus, with consoles you're not close up to the screen either.
