Have you also tried Inzaghi instead of Crespo? His positioning rocks!!( and that's hard to admit due to the fact, I hate Pipo!)

About the manual bar, you really should give it a try, works for me.
Use the same defending tactic with your defenders as you do with the dmf's.
Hold him up and let the reinforcements arrive.

One-two's are defendable. Use R2 + running to walk along with the player who started the 1-2.
Use the pressure button to defend the other player.
Also, when somebody uses 1-2 near yoy goal area, let the keeper out early, to intercept.
And the offside trap, both manually and in tactics are useful against 1-2's, so keep the offside trap at A.

Off topic; You;re Dutch right,Han?
Are you gonna compete at proballer? It's a major tournament!

Can anyone help me? I play PES4 as Inter using JMZ's very first tactic in the thread for PES3! Its a 3-3-1-3! I play a very defensive game & hit my opponents with quick counter attacks! JMZ said he didnt feel this tactic was as useful in PES4 as it was in PES3 but I find it ok! Are there any changes I could make to make the formation better in PES4? I know it would be better using classic players but am just gonna stick to Inter! My mate plays such an ugly but effective style & I dont know how to defend against it! He runs with a player & I cant stop him, he runs to the side of my penalty box and does a dragback & plays the ball into someone running completely free through the middle for basically a tap in! Most of his goals come from cut backs on the edge of the area & then a pass to someone standing free in the middle of the box for a tap in & I cant defend against it! He used this same tactic since PES2 & me & my other mates cannot stop it! Do u think it might be better if I man mark or make my defenders attacking arrows go backwards towards my keeper? Hopefully I wont have this problem in WE8:LE & PES5 because of the defensive AI being made smarter! I always play the enitire match with my manual bar set at the most defensive & I pride myself on defending but the formation did use to be a hell of alot better in PES3! I want JMZ back asap & definately back for PES5! Help me if u can! Thankz!

At the moment i play 4-4-3 in the master league.

.........................Paglucia(sp)..................

G.Johnson.....Heitinga........Chivu.........Heinze...

........................Fabregas..........................
......Rosicky..........................kaka.........

..Rooney....................................Sneijder....
........................Farfan........................

I use a rotation system, but this is pretty close to my strongest eleven. With two quick, talented wide men, i get loads of chances for the lethal farfan.

1. What is your opponent's formation?
2. I was about to recommend another formation to you, but you seem hooked to this formation and you don't want to change it. I still have to go back to the thread to look at this 3 - 3- 1- 3 formation, maybe I can help with some modifications to the awareness and team strategy.

In general, 3 in the back is quite risky in WE8. after experimenting A LOT with this setting the arrows and defense type right, I managed to have a strong defense with 3 at the back. However, the problem still lies in crosses. If your opponent good at playing on the sides, it is quite a challenge to defend with only 3. I had a similar experience, my opponent used to conqure from the sides, and luanched a very fast miduim hieght cross ( tapping O twice). He curves the ball too strong, to be finished off easily with one of his strikers. I managed to stop that ONLY when I had 4 at the back, and setting them right.
I see man mark won't help you that much. I dunt use it at all, and never felt I need to actually.
The solution is never give your opponent the inside, meaning let him run along the side and always make your player 2 inches behind ready for any drag back. This way the maximum he will get is a corner, when he tried to cross the ball but your defender should be able intersect it.

I also have a problem with the double-tapped cross
it's very fast and seems kind of wild, uncontrolled, you never know what will happen when it comes in
a lot of times I have my two CB's in the center, and my oponnent is on the wing, he makes the cross, and a striker,a comes running from way back, dives in and scores a goal
what is the best way to defend against this?
I play 4-4-2 diamond and do very well with my friends, I manage to defend against everything they put on, except this, and it's just so frustrating when I conceed a goal like this
I think that this medium cross is unrealistic, as is the high cross...with the high cross it is very difficult to score, even when your striker is alone...and the medium cross is too effective
does enybody else have the same problem?
is there something I can do in the formation settings to make my CB's defend better against this?

I have to say it's one of the most amazing threads I ever saw. Very good job.

Can you please build formations for Inter and Real Madrid?

My mate doesn't cross it after a dragback! Its just a normal pass into the middle of the box to an unmarked player for a tap in or a close range shot! My mate uses the ac milan & liverpool default formations!

Firstly, if you don't know how to do it, here is an explanation of how to change formation in game without pausing.

01. Set up your default formation just as you normally would. Make sure every tiny detail is perfect. Set individual attack and defence arrows. Pick your best team, this may not be final until you have finished Formations A and B.

02. Go into STRATEGY, You will see

MANUAL
SEMIAUTO
FORMATION A
FORMATION B
COPY TO A
COPY TO B

select MANUAL, then assign Triangle to Formation A, and Square to Formation B. Assign X to Counter Attack and Circle to whatever you want.

03. Then select COPY TO A+B. This will give you a template to work on for your alternate formations.

04. Go into FORMATION A and move your players around to whatever you want. Alter attack and defence arrows as required. Try not to pull too many players out of their default positions, a couple of subtle changes can have as much impact as a full formation change. You need to take into account your players abilities and what other positions they can play. Do the same for FORMATION B.

05. Now you're ready to test it out. Use Exhibitions until you find the right balance, so you don't mess up your league if it isn't working for you. To activate the formation changes in game, you need to press L2 + Triangle or Square. When the symbol appears next to your status bar, it means it's active. Don't have both on at the same time though, they'll cancel each other out.

06. Practice and experiment. That is after all what gaming is all about.

OTHER NOTES.
Instead of having 3 formations, you could go for a simpler option of just 2. Instead of selecting MANUAL, select SEMIAUTO and assign L2 to FORMATION A. This way you only have to press L2 in game to activate your formation change. And it makes using the other strategies, like counter attack and zone press easier as all 3 will be automatic. Although the hardcore won't like the idea of the computer changing for them.
Player selection and positioning is key. You may need to edit some players to compensate for extra positions Konami didn't get right.
Your formation will only be saved in your master league if you have done it within the menu system, and not before a game. If you do it before a game, go to stock formation to save it.
Don't forget to save it.

All the details you could need are on the images.
HIGH NORMAL LOW (blue text) = individual defensive status (blue arrows). Accessed with Formation, Individual.

Earlier pictures were made for PES3, later you will see a new design, they are for PES4, but the idea carries through both games.
Enjoy.

Attacking Options

This is the formation I use in PES4 but it is designed for PES3! Can anyone tell me the best players for each of these positions in PES4? They can be normal & classic players but if u say classic would u plz be able to spell their defaults names plz! Thankz!

JMZ formation above is excellent & it has 3 at the back! It was designed for PES3 but it still works pretty good in PES4! I am just waiting o someone to tell me any modifications I could make to the formation to make it better in PES4! I was hoping observer could help me!

Pro,
I don't know exactly what problems are you facing with this formation. do you want to increase your offense or add more security to your defense? I assume you have some problems in the back, caus this is what I will have if I choose to play with this. and don't forget, your way of playing, players, pace and skills make a difference. Anyway, I tell you what I think:
I played with this jMz formation for a long time in PES4, and it worked well for me for quite sometime (almost 2 months). I tried many other formations as well. Everytime, I watch a football match, read a football magazine or drive my car, I have an idea for new formations. I think about this even before I sleep :) and to breif you more about myself. I play this game almost 3 times a week with my friends, and we do take it really serious (talking about 5/6 hours of hardcore WE straight sometimes). Some of mates play in some "national" competitions here, but I am not into that. I constantly play around with formations and tactics cause this what makes a difference and gives you an edge over your pals.
As my mates were getting better at the game, and meantime getting used to this above formation, I had to change it later. Cause sooner or later you have to change your formation. Every formation is suitable for a certain purpose and for a certain opponent.
Back to this formation, If your opponent doesn't play well on the sides, you have a good chance with this formation. The weak point with the default formation here is that it is not well covered on the sides, defense wise. I even had a discussion with jMz before about this, and he even thought that at a "professional" level in PES4, playing with 3 at the back could cause you a lot of trouble even with 2 DMFs. The regular one tap :circle: is not effectibe in PES4. However, The douple tapped crosses :circle: + :circle: is deadly. You have to cover the sides more. Your team can be voilated from the back, and as your defense try to cover the side, a deadly cross, or a low pass to the middle will find many to finish it off.
Here are more details on the above formation, based on MY EXPERIENCE WITH IT:
Default: 3*4*3:
Offensively: The 2 CM feilds work great offensively and overlap with 2 Wings. You get a good control on the mid feild and at the front. You need good WFs with good crosses, and always rely on :circle: + :circle:
Defensively, if your good at defense the team is hard to be conqured from the center. but SIDES SIDES....again this is what I see as a MAJOR problem here. I know the 2 CMF have defensive arrows to the sides. However, they go forward and participate in offense as well, and if your skillful opponent caught the ball then, you would have only you lonely DMF covering a huge space!
if you really like this formation, My advice here is to add two awareness arrows to your DMF. Two arrows one to the right back and another to the left back. Push the 2 wings more to the front and change one of the CMFs defense to HIGH instead of NORMAL.
Formation A: 3*1*2*4
I scored many goals and finished some good matches with it. however, This formation can not be taken seriously. I only switch to it, when my opponent gets a corner on me, and I want to risk and luanch a counter attack with 4 players ahead. But I must tell you, if I forgot to switch back to the default after my counter attack, I would conceive a goal in seconds. I am sayin this and I am known that I am so good at defense! My advice: only activate this in to get counter attacks. Very very effective otherwise it is Very risky formation.
Formation B: 3*2*1*4
it is basically the same as formation A: same risk with less effectiveness in offense. Don't let the 2 in the middle fool you. The CMF gets caught up in offense and you end up again defensing with 3 players., I would not choose this as any of my formations.

I don't prefer 3 at the back much now. Zygalski mentioned it before, always have 4 at the back and 2 defensive or CMFs, and shuffle the rest the way you want. The 2 players at the world championship for WE11 were having 4*4*2 formation. 4 at the back is more solid, and using arrows and strategies you can make them attack all over the place.

Changing formations is the best thing in this game that makes it standout more than any other game. Usually, I go for a balanced formation as a default (I will post you my current formation now when I have time). Inspired by our friend jMz and classic brazil, I have a slightly different formation now that works wonder. It is balanced and secured, but I do have miracles with it in offense as well. The second formation is a another balanced formation but with a little twist that makes a huge difference in the gameplay. The second formation switch my gameplay to make me focus more on the sides rather than from the center. The final formation should be an all out attack in which you feel really bored and want to finish it off on the spot. This happens when you are down and don't have enough time, or you just want it soo bad.

Cheers, :)

Thanks observer! Post them asap! Have you tested any formations in WE8:LE? Maybe 3 at the back would work better on it with the defensive AI being smarter?
