Anyone want me to type out the review of Fifa 07?

Well, I thought I wouldn't put the whole review in, but a summary.

Is this the campaign where Fifa finally comes good. We hate keeping people in suspense, so we'll tell you the answer now: It's a resounding "yes" Fifa 07 is a brilliant football game. While most of the changes contained within are evolutionary on paper, the end result is a revolution for tjis much-maligned series.

Starting with a physics change
In previous Fifa's the ball's movement was set by the animation. If the keeper dived to the left to save a shot, for example, the ball would always spin out of his hands in the same direction - the one the animation dictated. Now it' entirely context sensitive, so the flight of the ball is prompted by more complex variables like a bounce friction and topspin. For the most part thismeans the ball responds in a far more realistic manner. We're not just talking about spinning through the air when you hit a 30-yard humdinger-we mean moments of beautiful randomness.
Case in point, late in the Merseyside derby, Tim Cahill belts a long range effort past Reina and against the post. The ball comes back into play, hits Reina's knee, loops up into the air, and falls perfectly for the onrushing andy johnston to happily nod into an empty net.

The cleverest thing is these freak moments of drama don't happen in every other game- they're as irregular as in real-life football. In the 60 matches we played we saw three free kicks awarded for hand balls two goals scored from longe range shots deflecting from long range shots deflecting off a defenders backside and one-beautiful in swinging corner that dipped over the keeper and crashed agains tthe bar. You'll occasionally spot sneaky shirt pulls and not-so-subtle shoves in the back, keepers over stretchingand failing to hold crosses and desperate goal-line clearances, small details that not only underline how context senstitive everythign now is, but also that the sweetspot goals that hampered previous Fifa's has gone.

Simple passing is effortless, and the pace is such you can retain possession easily in defence and midfield.

Shooting is now context sensitive, depending on the timing, angle. Long range peaches are still possible but they now require some skill.

There are also first touch features left in, but you don't need them to beat a player, a turn of pace can be as effective.

Sure there are flaws if you look hard enough, for example keeper charge, regularly leaves your man from the nets at the edge of his box watching the ball flying past him, and the old problem of players feeling generic in comparison to the brilliantly individual casting of Pro Evolution remains, but not as pronounced as previous versions.

However, none of these minor issues can detract from the fundemental changes to the gameplay which has had an entriely positive effect.

There's still scope for improvementbut Fifa is now a serious contender for the footie crown Exactly how uch ground it's made on PES this year will only become clear in next months review of PES6

GRAPHICS 8 - Looks great, but some animations are still off
SOUND 9 - Clive tyldeslay and Andy Gray in top form
GAMEPLAY 9 - EA nails footy at long long last
LIFESPAN 9 - PLenty of game against both AI and your mates
OVERALL 9/10

I've also read lots of previews for FIFA 07, and the amazing thing is "all" of them have rated the game very highly and some even saying that it may even tople PES as king of soccer.

I will defo be picking up both FIFA 07 & PES6 for the 360. Roll on October!

What game where you watching on saturday? Thats wasn't the same incident that i was watching. Carsley had the shot, Reina palmed it up in the air (at no point did it hit the post), he then caught the ball but his momentum was taking him into the goal so he threw it up into the incoming Andy Johnson who headed it into the roof of the net. Thats how it happened.

Anyway, the review. The Pro Evo series has had all these features for the past few years so it doesn't really strike me as evolutionary in the football gaming world. FIFA '07, by the sounds of it, has improved from the last installment but it won't take away the crown of the great PES series, nor will i be purchasing it either.

maybe I read it wrong but i assumed that they were describing something that happened in fifa 2007 when they were playing that game....

Im sure that the exact thing that happened when liverpool played everton didnt happen in therr game, it was just an example of how much more realistic it is

I seriously question that review... or it just confirms that people that actually review the game have no idea what they are talking about. They just look at the Key Features on EAs website, play few games and start making conlcusions.

The context sensitive stuff with the new physics engine, where the ball is separate entity and not animation driven is exclusive to 360 only at the moment, or should I say Next-Gen consoles...

PS2, Xbox, GCN, PSP, PC versions of the game have still old engine where everything is animation driven... I have a PS2 demo and the ball IS still animation driven as well as everything else...

PSM can only dream on seeing all these new features in the PS2... Hughes Ricour (FIFA producer) has already confirmed that new engine is next-gen exclusive and that this gen consoles are simply not powerful enough to handle it...

My 2 cents...

Minor issues? Did the reviewer ever play football himself, so he may know how it feels like to play a real football game?

My already very low stand on Official magazines has dropped down.

I appreciate EA for the effort they did to make Fifa07 better. And they did well in every part of the game except the game play i.e. the pitch. And i think the thing that makes the difference is the last point. Fifa07 has the same engine as Fifa 06.

Olodude is absolutely right. PRO EVOLUTION SOCCER IS FOR MEN, FIFA IS FOR BOYS!!!

Thats never the case for me. I always get to the box, pass it in and their defender intercepts it. Which is good. Fifa? gameplay? 9? Don't make me choke on my weetabix!
