You need to make sure the midfield are in the "tick" shape though to ensure there is always someone looking for a pass. Also, you need to tinker with the the defending priorities and the attacking arrows to ensure optimum tactics from this formation. You also need to make sure that Henry / Ronaldinho / Messi all play quite wide behind Eto'o.

The formation that I've used for ages now (from about PES5) is 4-4-2 A1 which is basically a 4-4-2 diamond formation with and AMF then A LMF and RMF slightly behind AMF, in terms of position, then a DMF. The defense and strikers stay flat across.

Yeah sometimes i play it when im getting beat.4-3-3 is very good for wingers but 4-4-2 is very good playing in the middle

4-4-2 A-1 (Diamond) works like a charm in this PES edition.


When I started out my ML with the default players and things were tough I depended on 4-5-1. That way I definitely have more of the ball. You are not going to beat the cpu with lesser players(in terms of abilities) unless you see more of the ball and in turn they see less of it so they can't hurt you.



4-3-3 is another good one but what I don't like about it is that you tend to sacrifice so many good players. For example when playing a league, cup or ML. Most teams don't have that many good attacking players so if you use up all your forward players in a 4-3-3 and all your central midfielders or Attacking midfielders there will be no guys to play in the next game. The fatigue in PES2008 is a bit harsh so you have to be careful with the way you use your players. That's why I prefer 4-4-2 or 4-5-1.

Boltons standard 4-3-3 works well, especially with Diouf & Stelios out wide. Defence is iffy, but if you put Campo in & drop him to v.deep midfield it works better.

5+6) centre backs, high defence
2+3) full backs, attack forward only, high defence
4) defensive midfielder, attack backward only, high defence
7+8) central midfielders, attack forward and backward, normal defence
9+11) centre forwards, attack forward and forward/infield, normal defence
10) striker, attack forward only, low defence

I've found, before using this system, the AI would pull your players out of position (right winger on left flank) creating holes for the opposition to exploit. This formation crowds the midfield making it harder for players to stray out of position, also useful for counter attacking as well as closing down opposition.

Could also depend on squad. created my own as per my Sunderland team of FM'06, as follows.

Play 4-4-2, but play your wingers so far up the pitch they are classed as strikers so techniquely a 4-2-4 formation it may sound stupid but its fab you may concede a few goals but when u counter you will have 4 on 3 resulting in goals galore

Well this might sound stupid but in my ML I used Portsmouth and experimented with a 2-6-2 formation and it worked well. I'm not planning to use it again because it doesn't suit my game but if you love playing with width it's perfect.

i play with a 3-4-3 formation and it works really well if you have 3 fast and strong defenders that are good in the air and when faced by an opposing player.you can play with a dmf,2 cmfs, and amf with 2 wfs and a drogba type striker or you can play with a dmf, cmf, a l and r mf 2 ss and a striker. both options are good the first is better for building play and creating chances while the second is lethal on the couter attack.both are solid in defence and is a really good option
