RONNIE MOORE is set for a sensational return as manager of League Two Rotherham United.

Moore, surprisingly sacked by Tranmere in June after three seasons years in charge at Prenton Park, has beaten off keen competition from rivals such as Steve Staunton and Steve Cotterill to secure a second spell with the Millers.

The 56-year-old was the manager who drove Rotherham’s dramatic rise from League Two to the Championship with back to back promotions at the start of the decade.

The Millers then enjoyed four years in the football's second tier before relegation sparked the financial upheaval the club has endured in recent seasons.

He takes over at Rotherham from 39-year old Mark Robins, who for his great work at Rotherham - keeping Rotherham up through 2 recent administrations - was wanted by Championship club Barnsley and so opted to leave and manage in a higher division.

Millers chairman Tony Stewart interviewed eight candidates for the job. Former Rotherham captain Jimmy Mullin will be his assistant.

Ronnie will be unveiled at a press conference at 10.30am on Friday.

New Rotherham manager Ronnie Moore says the club has a three-year plan to make it into the Championship.

Moore is back as Millers boss for the second time having guided them from the old Division Three to Division One during his first spell.

And that is a feat the club's board expect him to repeat.

He told BBC Look North: "The ambitions of the board and chairman are unbelievable. They want us to be in the Championship in three years."

Moore, sacked as Tranmere boss in June, replaces Mark Robins who took over at Barnsley earlier this month.

During his first period as Rotherham manager between 1997 and 2005 the 56-year-old masterminded back-to-back promotions.

He said he was delighted to be given the chance to mirror that achievement.

"It's fantastic to be back," he said.

"When the chairman said to me 'send your CV in and we'll take a look,' I thought there was no way I was going to get the job.

"So there's a lot of satisfaction knowing that I've gone through the selection process with 50 other applicants and got the job.

"There will be supporters saying this is just a sentimental appointment but it's not sentimental for the chairman. He's given me the job because I'm the best man for the job and I hope to show the supporters I'm the man to take Rotherham back where they should be."
