OK, I am late with this - but have just been introduced to it in the last week or so.

What is it? It's a free mod for a fairly unsuccessful game in its own right, called ArmA 2: Operation Arrowhead (which in itself is an add-on for ArmA 2). The bundle of the two stand-alone games weigh in at £25 on Steam at the moment. You then download and install the mod over the top.
DayZ places you, the player, in a 225 km² sandbox environment in Russia, which has been hit with an unknown infection that has turned the place into a zombie apocalypse.
Food, drink, weapons and objects are in short supply and the goal is simply to survive.
The zombies are not the only enemy, however; watch out for other players. Many have become bandits after days of isolation, unwilling to trust other humans. Others still will look to strength in numbers to team up.
Frankly, it is excellent fun. The average life expectancy, according to the mod's site, is just over an hour.
I'm so far about 6 hours in and it feels a real achievement. If you die, you lose any equipment and gear you've gathered on your travels.
Ammo is precious. This isn't a run-and-gun, player-versus-player game.
I would recommend it to anyone. The concept is fantastic and the way the community is shaping it is really cool, too. There are servers where banditry is high. There are others that discourage it but ultimately let you do what you do. There are others still that outlaw player killing.
All get yourselves on the case and go searching for a hunting knife, an axe and some matches. Then, track down a sheep, kill it, then skin it and cook it on a campfire.
If you don't, you might just die of hunger.
