OK, I am late with this - but have just been introduced to it in the last week or so.

http://dayzmod.com/

What is it? It's a free mod for a fairly unsuccessful game in its own right, called ArmA 2: Operation Arrowhead (which in itself is an add-on for ArmA 2). The bundle of the two stand-alone games weigh in at £25 on Steam at the moment. You then download and install the mod over the top.

DayZ places you, the player, in a 225 km² sandbox environment in Russia, which has been hit with an unknown infection that has turned the place into a zombie apocalypse.

Food, drink, weapons and objects are in short supply and the goal is simply to survive.

The zombies are not the only enemy, however; watch out for other players. Many have become bandits after days of isolation, unwilling to trust other humans. Others still will look to strength in numbers to team up.

Frankly, it is excellent fun. The average life expectancy, according to the mod's site, is just over an hour.

I'm so far about 6 hours in and it feels a real achievement. If you die, you lose any equipment and gear you've gathered on your travels.

Ammo is precious. This isn't a run-and-gun, player-versus-player game.

I would recommend it to anyone. The concept is fantastic and the way the community is shaping it is really cool, too. There are servers where banditry is high. There are others that discourage it but ultimately let you do what you do. There are others still that outlaw player killing.

All get yourselves on the case and go searching for a hunting knife, an axe and some matches. Then, track down a sheep, kill it, then skin it and cook it on a campfire.

If you don't, you might just die of hunger.

Video here - won't embed for some reason.

It sounds cool. Too bad it's an addon for an addon for a game. The asking price is going to deter me from this game.

I'm wide to this game a good while now, there's always Tunngle if you really want to play it.

Surely Barn/Jonno and their lil crew know about this game already? I aslo heard rumors that DayZ (The hacker) got employed by the game makers to work on a new console version of the game, they've even went as far as re naming it after him.

For people that don't know the game isn't actually called DayZ, that's just the hack that put it on the map. Originally when the game (ArmaII) was released it peaked in the top 30 or something like that but a few months/years later Dayz hacked the fuck out of it and it went viral which seen it re surface straight to number 1 in the PC gaming charts just on the strength of the mod. Great game though Nifty.

I heard they were going to release a retail version, that was quite a few months ago though.

They have recently confirmed that a stand-alone version will be released, with talks ongoing about a console version specifically.

I've just had my legs broken by a sniper whilst on my way to meet two friends. He then came up to me, rifled through my bag, realised there was nothing in there of value (a couple of bandages and a wood pile) and walked off, leaving me there for dead.

Thankfully I had my morphine shot to take.

If I ever work out who he is, I will be seeking my revenge. I feel like I just made my first enemy - quite an exhilarating turn of events.

There are zombies, who are NPCs/AI-controlled. They roam about the place everywhere, basically.

But then you have other players, too. These players' first goal is to survive, just like you. But many go player-hunting.

Evidently, I fell foul to a player-hunter. Hunting players of course means you're more likely to pick up supplies from them, so it has its benefits. Also, you're eliminating threats to you. I guess for all he knew, I was a player-hunter so he took me out given the chance.

Got back into this there with a few lads over the past week, tis something else really. I stashed a banger of a car in the woods last night just before logging off, as bad as it is she's driving and gets me from A to B.

Hoping some bastard didn't nick it on me.

Is anyone playing this?

I would but there's way too much hacking going on.

You can say that again. The worst part about the game though is the spawn points. If you want to play with a friend you'll often start off at opposite ends of the map which means you'll spend the next couple of hours running full pelt just to meet up with them. Once you get there it can be fun but as you say the hacking ends up ruining it.

How can you say that any ArmA game is unsuccessful?!
The series has a very loyal fan base. A community that is following the series since the original OFP (Operation Flash Point). Yes, it is a military simulator that may not appeal to most CoD style gamers, but the game is very successful on what it wants to be.

We're using a pretty well administrated sever through Dayz commander at the moment but after 3-4 am the hacking does start to play a bit.

As for what phatts is saying, yeah it can be a bit of a drag meeting up but only if one person is way up North and doesn't want to re spawn. All the spawning down the south coast and if you ever find yourself over 2000m apart just die and take another spawn.

It's a truly magical game in it's concept though and the stand alone should pimped. I personally hate the FPS games where you're getting killed every 3-4 minutes so sneaking around for hours trying to survive is right down my alley.

I'll love to get a good gang from on here online though for the criac and see if we could hold down one of the towns.

What's your steam name? I'll add you on there and will see if we can get something going at some point.

It's happening alright I do no that much, but when I searched for a release date I couldn't find one. I think what happened was at the start they just planned on releasing it as is but then they got into re writing the game completely so that lil things like items not just spawning on the ground but on shelves and on tables etc and zombie glitching through walls.

By the end of it they went for a complete overhaul.

I've just logged off having had a quick session on a server with Dundon's and laughin man.

To confirm - both of them are as Irish as they claim.

Me and Dundon's managed to meet up in one of the cities and I managed to snag an SUV but during our quest to find a toolbox to fix it up, I got myself shot. Too much attention being drawn.

For any others who wish to join in, I think we've found a server we're all happy with. It's a bit mental in terms of number of players at peak times, but seems decent enough.

Server details:

DayZChernarus - (1.7.6.1/103419) [REGULAR NP:OFF] dayzsurvival.eu | UK London Survival | 400+ Vehicles | Extra Loot | Crash Sites | Full Moon | Lights & More! | DayZ.ST 7 DayZ Chernarus on chernarus

IP address: 185.2.139.156:3187

Ping is decent and connectivity stable enough. Starts you with basics rather than all-singing, all-dancing loot pack which is decent. You do have a map to help you with orientation, though.

If we can get a few of us on I will start screen-capturing and try and put together a PESGaming highlight reel.

Just to clear it up Nift, that was my youngest brother Cris using Lauighinman's account. Was a good craic for what was in it, I've a feeling I'll be playing this game for a long time to come.

Someday I dream to roll like this guy, he's a proper boss.
