Very cool.

I just bought my own copy there on steam for €20 rather than bumming the freebee and that was for the bundle package of ArmaII and ArmaII operation arrow head. You need both of them to play the DayZ mod.

Serious game, for serious people. :folarm:

Fuck it. Decided to go for it.

Been watching some youtube videos and it looks fairly good, could be awesome if we could get loads on at once.

Good lad.

Make sure you download the DayZ mod free on steam and also a program called DayZ Commander, you'll need that to play on the best servers.

http://www.dayzcommander.com/

Found an unreal PVP server last night, cars and choppers everywhere!!! Extremely good for a lot of peeps wanting to me up in the same place quickly on top of that if you get killed you can recover a lot quicker, better for shorter session games like we'd be looking for on here.

We managed to pick up a hitchhiker last night who brought us to a Hili graveyard, I swear there must of been 20 of them smoking in a field, the best of sniper rifles and ghillie suits but the place is swamped with snipers so you'd need a good plan of action to get in around them. On top of that the graveyard is mobbed with zombies.

We'll be playing tonight if anyone is around.

You won't regret it; as long as you can look past some of the glitches (it is a mod, after all). I promise you will shit yourself if you play the game at night for the first time.

You'll probably have it downloaded and installed about this time next year so let us know when you're ready.

I would really recommend having someone online with you when you first play it. The learning curve and all the buttons etc is quite steep and it is frustrating to work it all out yourself. I'll be online this evening, post-barbecue, so happy to guide you through it all if you like.

A little heads-up - download and install Arma II and once it is done, run it once.

Then do the same for Arma II: Operation Arrowhead, running it once.

If you don't run the game it doesn't finalise the installation and it can be a pain to work-around getting the second one to correctly install.

Only then should you download the DayZ mod and install it.

For anyone wanting to add me on Steam, my ID is: maconnolly.

My in-game name is Polski.

This game, when played with a group, is all about being wily and resourceful and, in my opinion, above all - quiet. Unseen.

The other alternative is to find yourself a chopper and get someone in the gunner seat and just shoot the shit out of everything you come across. Me and my mate deal with helicopter crash sites by hovering the chopper nearby and taking out all zombies with the gun, before landing and clearing out whatever loot there may be. Of course this doesn't eliminate human player involvement, but I think if we had a bigger group we could ensure we had our own snipers trained and on the look-out to counter-snipe. If a sniper fires a shot and misses, it is game over for them.

We got a camp site going last night near a little town that has a hospital, fire station and shopping center. On top of that then there's 8 military barracks!!! So a least from now on we know where to meet up and where to stash our better gear if we manage to double up on items. It also provides us with a good spot to head when we die and want regroup and load up on guns.

Next plan of action is to sort out a good spot for where choppers spawn and set up another tent near by, then we're going to do some proper missions.

I'm going to be online for much of this evening. Would be good if someone could join as certainly more fun in a group. I will try and scope out a good server and get some sort of PESGaming base going.

Apps, if you've downloaded/installed but not played yet, find me on Steam and I'll give you a lesson. I'm not being patronising, by the way - some of the controls and keyboard shortcuts take some getting used to. And there's fucking loads of them!

I will have to find or get a mic from somewhere to play. Loaded it up last night confused as fuck. Joined a random server with no other players and I was spawned in pitch black thought fuck this and exited.

I've been watching those videos of the guy who Dundon's has posted and he makes it look epic. If I can't get online at the same time as you the rest of you I might just fuck about on Arma II to get a hang of the controls, some control changes will need to happen though...I mean double tap W to sprint? Seems silly to me.

Edit:

My steam name is: Vanish69

You do need to be on a headset of some kind playing this game, especially with other folks if you're wanting to meet up and plan things out anyways. Otherwise it's too much a pain in the ballz trying to type while the game is running.

We tried hooking up with Phatts and Nifty the other night but it was a mission and a half, then if you get killed in the meantime you're back to square one dealing with where to meet up. That's why I had suggested the GITS server, at least on that server we can get a chopper handy enough and collect all the party members.

Aside from that then there's plenty of cars about making it a lot easier to get around the map. Might not be the total Dayz experience but then again when you're only online for a limited amount of time and want to join a group this is the way forward.

Here's a video for the new stand alone version, looks epic but still no sign of a release date, Nifty will be in his element, plenty of scavenging.

Would just like to point out that I stayed alive on our original server whilst you all dropped like flies.

I'm in central Cherno with a sniper rifle and had full control of that city's traffic. If you decided to give it another go I am sure a meet would be easier. We were unlucky in that you boys were pinned down by an aggressive sniper that night (and Phats kept closing doors on himself!).

I have ordered a headset with a mic. Had another quick blast running round unstealthy haha just trying to work out how the game plays. It feels...weird but I'm sure I'll get use to it. Give me a shout when your on and I'll join you.

Just a warning, I'm gunna be extremely shit.

As Nifty alluded to in his post, I am also extremely shit. If the controls were a bit better then I would be fine but I end up spending a minute trying to pick up a hatchet. I hadn't played the game for a while so was still a bit rusty and couldn't work out how to use the hatchet once I got it. Turns out "remove from toolbelt" is what I needed. For ages I was confused as I assumed that would mean to discard the item. Now that I am familiar again with the game I shouldn't die as much.

Listen up, we stumbled upon this server last night and I think it meets the requirements a few of you are looking for. For starters I asked if it was often targeted by hackers/cheaters and was told by this one helpful lad that as long as he's been using it he hasn't had one incident. Then I asked him if it was busy and he said it's mostly anywhere between 20-40 people at any one time.

There's heli crash sites and vehicles are rare enough, so scavenging is a big thing when looking for parts. They've also added weather change and other custom buildings. All in all it looks great so we're going to try and settle down on this server as the other one was a bit action packed.

You start with a few supplies and a crossbow. If any of you are logging in tonight we're heading towards the NEAF and the server is called "Zombies go home".

I'm going to put together a Nifty Survival Guide, which has some basic dos-and-don'ts for those new to the game.

There will be no spoilers (other than tagged ones) - just good, wholesome advice. It will cover the workings of the game, things related to orientation (without spoiling the discovery aspect) and other things I've picked up along the way.

I am not a very gung-ho player but I pride myself on not dying so hopefully it will help a few of you out.

Appswah Phatmann - don't worry about dying a lot early. I read somewhere that the average lifespan in the game was something like 37 minutes. If you consider lots of people know how to survive beyond that easily enough, that means newbies are dying like every 5 minutes. You're not alone.

New Starter Tip #1: Avoidance is the best policy

As soon as you spawn, press Z (to go prone).

Spawns are always along the coastline and you are notoriously exposed, especially to cruel 'bambi killer' players (as well as zombies). Unless you go prone, you are likely to die given you will either get shot by a sniper or attract zombie attention.

If you attract zombie attention, you will either be killed by them (because you will have no means of defending yourselves) or attract attention from players who see the line of zombies tailing you.

Just had an hour long session which is the longest I've survived lol but I've only played just short of 3hrs I'd say.

When I spawned I remembered the name of the town I spawned at then used hills, trees, bridges, roads and rails to find exactly where I was on the map. Instead of an ingame map I use THIS. Extremely helpful especially for me as I'm new to the game. I spawned west of Kamenka in the south and headed north east to the first deer stand then went north to the second deer stand and then north west to the third. All I got was ammo but I was hoping to get a nice weapon. My next move is to head north into Pavlovo as I need food and water and hopefully I come across other supplies. I'm playing on a fairly empty server (max so far of 9 players) as I really want to learn to avoid zombies and survive without having to worry too much about other players.

Thanks Nifty1Pound50 on the avoidance tip. It really is the only way to survive early on. I find that if you do aggravate a zombie and it starts to chase you, run and weave through tree's and bushes using number 1 and 3 on your keypad to check behind you. Then hide at the first opportunity you get, usually does the trick for me.

Good stuff Apps it looks like you're getting into the swing of things. I've managed to survive 2 days now on this new server despite it been busy. Some servers are user friendly, not saying this one is totally like that but there's a 50/50 chance if you meet someone they won't try to kill and rob you.

Getting back to the game, we've managed to get a Hmmv up and running, found it in an old town and all it needed was a new hull and a couple of wheels. Once we got it running we took the scenic route to both air fields up north, when we saved it up last night we logged off near another Hmmv that's in need of repair but we reckon we'll get that up and running too.

Really like the weather changes in this server it's very natural and adds a lot to the experience. Again, the server is called "Zombie go home" and we should be on later if anyone wants us to pick them up down south.

One more thing, still no sign of any hackers which is making the difference considering we're going about looting stuff we plan on keeping long term.

Cheating!

But I appreciate it is a necessity early on.

The reason I mentioned nothing relating to a map in my previous post was because I found learning to navigate without it one of the best aspects of the game. But I'm a purist with stuff like that.

Appswah Phatmann Dundon's - I'm determined to get you guys non-cheating and scavenging and surviving like me, so check the below:

Little tip: there is a constant wind that blows east in-game. ;)

Expanded navigation tip:

It is possible to find north without a compass, using little more than a watch and some common sense. The watch's functions go beyond just showing time, as you can use it as a makeshift compass.

The following method works only during the day, when objects cast shadows. Find a tall tree, a lamppost or a pole of any kind and set the watch so that the hour hand points at the sun (and the shadow casting object). The imaginary line between the hour hand and noon on the watch represents a line going north and south.

I will definitely be online tonight and will be staying later than usual as no work tomorrow! I plan to scare the shit out of Appswah.

I should be on tonight and will probably have a look for that "Zombie Go Home" server that Dundon's is using. If you don't play the game for a while it can take a bit of time to familiarise yourself with the controls so I feel more comfortable now after playing the other night.

Do any of you use headsets at all and if so how does it work in terms of in game i.e. do you only talk on specific channels or do you use an external application? I noticed that Apps mentioned something about a headset and I have a PS3 headset that is supposedly PC compatible so I might try it out.
