I am looking for some tips on defence, inparticuarly in the central midfield area, as when playing against good opponents online of the 550 and over standard, I find it difficult to get my midfielders in the right position, and don't know how to defend against the opposition midfield.
At the moment when I am playing against good opposition, I find they can far to easily pass or run through my midfield. For example they can often pass to the feet of a striker from a deep position, and these quick counter attacks often lead to me conceeding a goal, especially if the striker is someone like adrianno, who I find it impossible to defend against
In general defending near my own goal is not to much of a problem. My philosophy is to try and push the striker, or winger who has the ball outside as much as possible, never let them come inside, and always be on the backfoot, as it were, so if they get in behind I can make a recovery tackle. Then once they are pushed wide I can hopefully block the cross or short pass which I have forced them into playing, and if they do take a shot it is unlikely to be a goal from the wide position.
So what I want to know is, in terms of the formation what should be the position/attacking arrows/defence level etc... I should set, and when I get this right how can I move the midfielder to get tight/intercept the ball when my opponent passes to one of their midfielders or strikers? and how do I know when to tackle, and when to just mark, and block the pass? when do I run out to the player taking the pass, and when do I hold my position?
Should I employ manmarking? and if so who should I set to manmark who, and should it be agressive or normal?
At the moment I generally play a 4-4-2 with one dmf, and one cmf or amf, and two wing forwards. But I do occasionally play 4-3-3, and even more rarely a 3-5-2 depending on what team I pick.
In short, what is your defensive philosophy on these matters?
Thanks.
