For me the jury is still out. None of the team's I've controlled have played the set up that I go for and you can't edit the set-ups in the demo enough to tailor them. Consequently wing play is very frustrating. Also, I'm only playing on Superstar.
The improvements
Defending appears to be much better, as there are no easy dribbling routes to a shot from the edge of the box. It may be that the formation and play style I had in PES 2016 had runners drag defenders away nicely to open up gaps though in last year's game.
There are definitely more AI fouls and I usually get a couple of freekicks around the box each game.
Appropriate cards are dished out for those fouls as well. Also the odd yellow is given out for fouls caused by excessive pressuring, so a few more sendings off will be coming our way this year.
Goalkeepers are now good. Last year, I had to stop the opposition from shooting in the box to keep a clean sheet, and that was with my ML keeper Oblak on 99 keeper stats.
I haven't seen the AI try the silly short pass at freekicks that you can easily intercept yet. Hopefully, they've sorted that, though that's only an issue when playing the AI and it is easy enough just to choose not to exploit it.
Physicality between the players has been stepped up and is a good route to take in general. This also features in the annoying bits section below though, as they haven't got it completely right.
The addition of many more subtle animations is nice, not that this affects the all important gameplay.
The annoying bits :-
Good dribblers seem to jink a bit too lightning quick. They are much faster at jinking with the ball than they are at actually running without it. This also applies to getting your winger to flick the ball past a FB and chase after it. The number of times I completely wrong footed a FB and got a head start on them, with the aim of crossing the ball with my next touch, my player would slow to a walk and get overtaken. It's as if they are literally pulling you back, but you never get a freekick for it. I can understand nerfing wing play if it is considered overpowered, but this isn't the way to accomplish that. It just looks silly.
Passing feels really slow and deliberate with most teams. So I tried Barcelona and adopted the tiki taka style. I found I could pass the ball around with them nicely, but no real openings were made down the middle. However, if I tried the same thing out wide, I could easily work a crossing opportunity. Now that doesn't sound like Barcelona to me - LOL. I guess that could just have been the defences I was playing against.
The advantage rule seemed to work perfectly in PES 2016 and on those rare occasions that a foul was given a yellow card, the referee would hand one out after an elongated advantage being played. But in the demo, most of the time that the ref wants to give a yellow, he immediately stops play which is very annoying when you find that one of your other players is suddenly through on goal. This didn't happen in 2016. I've also had too many instances in the demo of the referee incorrectly working out when to play advantage. One example was out on the wing. My player had jinked past the FB and the FB hacked me down with a sliding tackle. One of my strikers had jogged over to try and continue the move, but the CB got their first and blocked my player's run and the ball ran out of play for a throw-in. The referee then showed their FB a yellow card and gave them the throw-in. How does that work? :realmad:
Hopefully the annoying bits will be sorted for the main release or in an update.
