FIFA 09 V PES 2009 From an Expert

Hi Guys,

Here we are, another year another release. It's that time of the year again.

Firstly why do I think I am an expert on the subject? Well I am a lawyer but I don't call myself an expert on law. However, I have played, I would dare say, every soccer game that has come out dating back to 1988. After 20 years of following and playing soccer simulations I think I have a right to call myself an expert on the subject. If you dont agree, you better have played every dame since 1988, otherwise please keep your opinions to yourself. And no you don;t have to be a programmer to be an expert, jsut love the game and be a fan of the genre.

In playing for so many years, I have continuously found myself wishing for added features and certain intricacies which have slowly been implemented. THe days of When Fifa International Soccer hit the shelves and the installment of the first Pro Evolution Soccer (or its cousin ISS) were major milestones for fans around the world.

But every year we visit the same question. How does PES and FIFA compare? And I am one who is very critical and take the question very seriously. Although the lines have become grey in certain aspects there is one aspect upon which these two titles can be contrasted.

Graphics, sound and animations of the crows and players aside, The distinction is on how the game 'feels' or plays out in your control. If you have paid close attention over the years, what makes a game seem more real is how smoothly and realistic the physics is perceived by your mind. Ever held your breath for a second as you shot the ball from a long distance, or slowly guided it past the keeper? And while it was travelling did you wonder if it was going to go in? And did it make you extra excited to see it hit the back of the net?

Did you say NO!? Then you must be generally a FIFA player. Now don't get mad at me, I love certain things about FIFA as well but those aspects are what we now expect in a soccer game, they should be standard, but not aspects of its realism. You see in FIFA the ball seems to behave like the game plays in two dimensions. It floats rather than flying and projecting. The gravity has very little impact on the flight of the ball. A quick tap and if you have not chosen a predefined path by using the analogue quickly as you shoot and the ball saiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiils over the bar as if you shot it out of a cannon rather then kicked it with a foot.

If FIFA is ever to take the crown from PES then it needs to work on teh ball physics. The realism that is felt when playing PES is due to the ball physics and the variations of power and control that can be achieved through the use of the various control methods. FIFA 09 is once again lagging behind from this perspective. Having said that, there is another aspect to realism.

Do you really feel part of the game in PES? Do you really feel like you are a player in the middle of stadium and the crowd are with or against you? Can you guess if its a final or a regular game? Maybe. This is the realism aspect which FIFA has concentrated on and left PES behind. The crowd and the camera angles that make you feel part of the action are more alive in FIFA.

Then a question occured to me. If we could take one aspect from either game and swap it with the other to make it perfect for the current series, what would it be? Take the ball physics of PES and place it into FIFA and you will almost have a perfect game. That's my personal view of course, but I think a valid one. Why did I not choose an aspect of FIFA and mend it with PES? PES has unfortuantely for me fallen behind in debth of game. Thus more than one feature would need to be imported from FIFA to make it Perfect.

Thats my two cents for another October fever. Till next time. Support both games if you want to see them improve.

all what talaash76 is saying is true.
i feel the same.

pes gameplay is good.konami has just to make it looking good from presentation's aspect and it will be the perfect game.

player models are good but when palying you don't feel in a real stadium.
i think that you agree with me that is still doesn't look next generation.
it is not a shame to learn from the competitors.

Yeah Konami certainly has a lot te learn with the presentation aspect, i think they are overlooking the small details of presentation. like for instance, at the beginning of a league match, they can show the WWDLW stuff of the last five matches. Let the commentators say different things in rivalry matches like "The history of these two sides go a long way back" etc. etc. They must just watch a couple of football games and look closely the way it's being broadcasted, and add that to their presentation!

I think the guy was spot on really, both games could learn a lot from each other & should have done by now.
In my honest opinion it all comes down to taste... what u want from a football game, for me PES always delivers what i look for in a football but i'm not saying that FIFA is shit or anything, it's simply just not my cup of tea.
If EA & Konami were to combine i think they could produce a near enough perfect game but i think we just need to accept that getting a perfect football game may simply just never happen.
I think PES 2009 will be a major leap from 2008 & things can only get better as Konami find new ways of using the power to it's full potential from the next gen consoles.

relax mate, jesus. the word 'thus' is so out of place in a footy game forum. such obvious points as well.

You have no idea how relaxed I am :). And that goddam technical word, like no one uses it man, like its not English man or something, so dude, like don't use hard french words like that, jesus man. I mean like Jeez.:fplm:

just having a little fun. Don't be mad. I do agree with you that there are certain words not designed for an informal forum. However, I work with people who throw legalese at me all day so its hard to change a daily habit. Though, then again its an English word and only four letters long. I should'nt be saying that though, it's such an obvious point as well. ;) I am glad, on the other hand, that you agree with everything else.

You're lucky in that, I almost stopped reading after I read that sentence. Just because you've played every football game since 1988, it doesn't mean someone can't have an opinion on the differences between the Fifa's and Pro's of this world these days. Football games have moved on a hell of a lot since then, so needing to play back in 1988 to have an opinion is a stupid point to make.

Still, in saying that, the rest of what you said mirrored my views on the two games. You never get that "feeling" of being proud of a goal you've scored in Fifa (at least up until 09, which I've yet to properly try), unlike in PES, when a 90th minute tap-in can feel as good as a 25 yard screamer.

Is it all to do with Fifa's ball physics? Maybe, maybe not. What I do know though is I definitely prefer the way the ball moves in PES.

A good summary though of the two games, and a good read, for the most part at least.

No that's not what I meant. I meant that because I used the word expert people will start to bag me, and thus I was trying to point out I based that amount of experience on actual practical experience. I didnt say that others should not have an opinion, just that I didnt want to be cornered for using the word 'expert'.

I think he's just on the wind up after playing only one match on the demo so far.

Cmon man, what is it with everyone, firstly the article clearly says FIFA is lagging in certain areas not that it's better. Secondly you guys need to be a little unbiased and practical. All you young new generation are wayyyyyyyyyyyy too impatient. You see people like me had to wait 20 years to see FIFA 09 and PES 2009. So I think its unfair for you to make that comment about me.
