Formation settings: the arrow attacks

Formation settings: the arrow attacks - badly developed?

This is the default Liverpool setup.

Am I right in thinking that these arrows indicate the runs that my players should make when I have possession of the ball? If yes, I have some question regarding this:-

1) Is there a way by which I can instigate these runs? I know one way is to pass to a player and then press RT, and the sender of the pass will start running. But can't I make a player, nearest to the one I'm controlling, just start running forward without?

2) Even though both my full backs have a forward arrow key selected, they don't seem like wanting to go past the half line. How can I force them to be more attacking generally?

3) My left winger often ends up running towards the middle, even though the arrows say he should be going towards or parallel to the sidelines. What am I doing wrong and how can I rectify that?

Thanks guys, player movements are really frustrating me in the game.

1) dno

2) Full backs are the worst thing about this game in my opinion, they never go where i want them to, its ridiculous sometimes... i think the answer to this question could be where you can select the players 'To go forward'... i know the option is there somewhere...maybe this is it...

3) is your left winger fight footed? maybe thats causing him to drift in all the time...

Yes! Didn't think about that...good one. That makes it rather interesting. Thanks.

Re: the full backs - I haven't played with some of the more attacking teams like United or Barcelona. Maybe their fullbacks are more willing to go forward than the liverpool ones. Still I feel the forward arrows should work, they seem pointless now.

Theyre not pointless...just really shit lol

an no. It still doesnt work, even when you play with ashley cole, patrice evra, or manny eboue, some of the most attacking full backs, they STILL dont go where you want them to!!

the best thing to do is make a standard formation with no arrows then make a 'strategy a' with the players in the position you want them to run in then set your controller tactics i.e. lb + a = 'strategy a' then when in game click lb + a when ever you want the players to run... you could even use 'strategy b' as a defensive set of runs

the answer to all 3 questions would be right and left side attack
or opposite side attack to maintain yor width

1. Sort of...there are players with the Playmaker ability. If that player has the ball, other players try to make runs so as to get into position for a good pass.

2. Use the left and right side attack strategies.

3. Point one of the arrows toward the opposition goal but towards the side also (at an angle). Also check and see if he doesn't have Center special ability, players with that ability tend to go to the center even if placed on the sides.

I think thats all, if i missed something ill post it

you see that dot in the middle with the defending arrow? That's me. Fuck the CMF position.

How do you edit the attacking arrows in PES2009? I found it all fine in PES2008 but I just can't find it in this years version, I've got the defensive arrows and everything just not attacking.

Press RT (R2) or LT (L2) in the formation mode when you edit positions. You can then choose attacking and defending arrows.

the fullback maybe because their defence is set to high, try puuting it to medium or low. although im not sure you can do this anymore, they are frsutarting when my winger has the ball and i hold it waiting for the overlap and they just stay stood around behind me!

btw i did notice these arrows on default formations/teams but can you put them into your own team like in ML. you use to be able to but ive checked everywhere and cant find away

EDIT nevermind just read the post above, cheers

yeah change the left and right backs to low defense but dont come back here moaning about getting counter attacked or the central defenders always getting pulled out wide to cover

Ok so I've spent some time trying out all the suggestions.

1) Firstly, those attacking arrows are utterly and absolutely useless!! I've tried all sorts of combinations on all sorts of players and some with with no arrows on them at all. And yet, all of them make weird runs at the wrong times. I see no pattern. Seriously, has anyone gotten them to work? Do they make much difference? Please let me know if you've figured it out.

2) The Right and Left side attack and implementing alternate formations (strategy a and b) during the game are much better ways to encourage wing attacks. Having said that, I've found that all players have some sort of general aversion from the sidelines. Everyone wants to drift towards the middle and I find that much too often the middle of the park is way overcrowded - extremely frustrating. Ofcourse this could just be with Liverpool. Am I the only one feeling frustrated about this?

Also players with high Aggression will go deeper in the attack, so that plays a big factor aswell for backs to come up.

i usually put my side backs at high defence and arrow back and they still end up goin forward and that helps alot .. as they help u alot with attack and also get back quickly in defence, this is always the case with any team i play a 4-3-3 line up with

I use Liverpool all the time and I find that when the RB is someone who is attack minded (Degen for example) they do make runs up the right side. If I have the ball in or around the box Degen always seems to be about 35 yards out from goal waiting around for a loose ball. He has made some smashing crosses into the box!

I suspect that the arrow has got something to do with the attack/defence level (the 5 bars below) that we set during gameplay.. hmm anyone mind to test that out?

Also, have you tried putting the defence on low and arrow pointing forward?

Thanks, am really interesting in understanding how the arrow works
