Well, I'd like Konai to focus upon doing what needs to be done in terms of striving to make the other aspects of the game as authentic as the gameplay...for example, real money instead of points, referees and assistants...I gues my biggest gripe has always been crowd dynamics, and while PES3 is actually better, in terms of authentic crowd movement at key moments than other games, I still find this aspect of the game (an aspect which ALL of us know intimately in real life) lacking. Imagine the suspension of disbelief when the crowd is authentically responding to the game...its not bad...not much is...but tweaking the "realism" in all other aspects of the game, to match the gameplay, would be a goal.

The Superpatch and Wolf's patch go a long way towards aspects of that realism, but of course there's a long way to go...

I've tried FIFA, but there seems so little variation it attack. Goals from outside the box are also very near impossible, so......

Wouldn't turn back though, although FIFA fans are stubborn, think they're always better, don't want to try new things......

Agree with you there on the crowd dynamics..it does need improvement. Real crowd chants are also needed. The crowd, although vocal, are a bit wooden, and it doesnt add enough to the overall atmosphere. But I think a ref on the pitch is surely needed now...dont want him to just appear from no where, when an offence is commited...cos you just wonder, where the hell did he come from?? Online play is another aspect, but I don't know if that is worth implementing as yet...as the whole gaming network, is not broadband ready, and there is no way you could get this to work on 56k connection. Also, there is also the lag factor....even with a broadband connection which happens in some cases in FPS games and racing. Usually caused by bad coding, or just simply, some connections don't work as well as others, and if they are all not in sync, you'll get lag....no good for football, as a game can change in a split second. Anyone tried Fifa's online, and is it any good?

I haven't tried it yet, but at ISSExtreme, there are a bunch of guys who have been playing WE2002 online with each other for quite a while now. It's a PS1 game and I reckon that if/when PES4 goes online, those boys will be ahead of everyone in that aspect as they've done it all before.

Tried it. Lag makes it non-intuitive...as you said, football turns on a dime, and lag makes that splitsecond-ness impossible.

I think that it is right, and correct, to submit that the global infrastructure is simply not ready for online gaming, and that the various attempts push the envelope to make it so, which is good; I'm actually glad that Konami hasn't sacrificed their gameplay (this is all on the PC, btw..I have no idea about PES on PS2) for online gaming wishes...

Crowd reactions would definitely add to the game especially when you hit the post or crossbar or miss an easy chance.

I don't know if anyone remembers a game called Goal! on the amiga (going way back) they had crowd reactions spot on like oohs and aahs when you hit the post. I think these days they concentrate on the commentating rather than the crowd. But I usually turn the commentating off after a while because it gets annoying.

Goal! (aka Kick Off 3) was quite good but it was no Sensible Soccer. :)
I agree about the commentating.

Am I the only one that actually likes the commentary then?...seriously, i don't think its that bad....just needs more emotion, Jonathan Pearce style...just that there is no emotion when a goal is scored...should be a bit more excitement in the commentary box.

The commentary often seems to lag a few seconds behind the game, and timing is everything.

I'd like an option to focus it on the moves players are making: 'player name' wins the tackle...he plays a short/long pass to 'player name2', who makes a tight-turn, and plays a neat through-ball for 'player name3'; oh, a step-over and a low shot, he scores! etc. etc.

The COM is controlling the players moves, it could tell you what's going on at the same time it executes those moves on the screen.

I can't stand it when he says.

Offside!
then explains.

When the ball came in, he was in an offside position.

Who doesn't know that!!?

Lol, true..and remember in PES2 or WE6:I when there`s a throw in.. you would get a text on the screen every time.. saying t h r o w i n.. they fixed it tho..

For the text, I think that was because of someone sending them a patched version of WE6:FE (from evo-web I believe) and they had that throw-in/corner text taken out of that. If they did it due to that, it's good that they understood the situation. Not so good that they encrypted the kits but it's OK now as people got around that.

lol. I worked in the sport; I know the CORRECT name (although, if WORLD SOCCER calls it "soccer," doesn't that make it okay, lol?).

Happy New Year.

Actually, I just recently played Sensible Soccer; and I do understand the devotion...solid game, even today...shows you how specific and how...narrow the utilization of EA's vast resources has been as reflected in FIFA's development...its almost like they sit down each year at the first meeting for the next "version," and, instead of starting with something like:

"How do we take it to the next level, challenging not only ourselves and each player, but the very industry?"

They say:

"Alliright; let's not try and re-make the wheel; we've got something that sells...how do we tweak it? We'll let Marketing spin it as something "new," but how do we make it LOOK new?"

Shame.

Well said Mel

I feel that the question this SHOULD raise is...
"Aren't FIFA themselves aware of the difference between the two games, and how much better the PES series would promote 'the beautiful game' if they were to be granted the licenses?"

Personally, I think that FIFA feels that EA Sports do a great job of promoting the game to kids. In Britain there used to be a comic strip called "Roy of the Rovers", in which the hero would typically score a screamer of a goal from 40 yards in the dying seconds of a game (as you do!). Kids love the simplicity of being able to press one button, and the ball will be passed 60 yards cross-field in a wonderful arc to land right at the feet of your teammate....or do they?
In my experience, kids today are masters of the joypad, and will proceed to kick your ass in most games should you be brave enough to challenge them. The only reason they choose EA Sports is the marketing, including player endorsements...I mean, have you ever seen an ad for PES on TV? I'll bet that when Thierry Henry goes home at night after training, the first thing he does is to switch on his PS2 and play PES 3. But unless Konami get their finger out of their collective ass and give him some money to promote it, the kids will have to make do with EA Sports for another generation.

P.S. Send your r?sum? to Konami today
