That helps :faceplm:

I don't think his stats are wrong. I play with him on Benfica (bought him) and he plays well. His stats are almost as good as Di María, who's a year old, and a very good player. But in real life he's not really a good player, he's just better than he used to be now that playing outside of the MLS has enhanced his development. He's athletic with good dribbling skills and has the willingness and ability to take on defenders one on one. He's the only US player with those qualities. However, he doesn't do much else well (I don't think he could succeed as a good team player at a high level) and there are plenty of players where he's playing with those same abilities and much more. Thus he can't get playing time anywhere.

While i do agree with you on some points, he does bring a certain imbalance to the game, for better or worse. Its entertaining to watch him play, he's so unpredictable.
His talent seems to be indirectly proportionate to his results tho.

He does seem to have the ability to unite a team a la a team leader. But he IS a ball hog sometimes :S

I hope his stats are weak as to reflect his real life talent. Every year Portugal produces 15 players that are better than Freddy Adu, he'll never get past his current level. I saw him play for Benfica for a whole year and he should be much better than he is at his age. He scored several goals entering in the final minutes, but none of them showed more than great positioning. I rarely saw him dribble one oponent, two is out of his reach. A total bluff. I thought that 1,5 million Euros for him was a bargain, but it's actually more than he's worth.

no he just telling it how it is

I found him shortly after starting this thread and Im fine with his stats. I don't think hes that good at all. Living here in the US i think hes exciting to watch play for the US team. He definitely one of the better ball handlers on that team if not the best it seems when it comes to technique. When it comes to the rest of the world hes at the most a C to C+ player. Maybe a B- :p.

How so? Freddy had an incredible showing at the U20 WC, basically man handling and beating brasil with his talent, and his touch and skills on the ball.

He is unproven in europe right now because he is a late sub, and unluckly was loaned out by Benfica who is stacked at his position, and Dimaria not helping. IMO He had a better season last season, than Di Maria the Argentine Wonder boy. Had USA done better in the Olympics(not his fault) he would be better off.

The fact of the matter is, Benfica loaned out Adu to get playing time, to Monaco. But in doing so Monaco was more interested in selling shirts and his hype that he brings, attracting US fans. He has yet to start a game for them, or get more than a half for that side.

His last game in his measly 4mins playing for Monaco had some nice cuts, and plays and passing, almost setting up a goal for Park.

He deserves more time, but it looks like he isnt in the DTs plans for Monaco. He deserves to go anywhere to get playing time and to show case his skills.

Hopefully at a club that will start him and let him work his magic(good and bad). lol

The kid just needs playing time, and a coach to have faith in him completley. Everywhere he goes its bad luck that they go through a change in coach right away.

The truth is, like my friend says: Benfica is one of the worst places to put a wonderkid growing, it's a giant club but underachieving in these past few years. With a total of 14 million fans in the world (5 million alone in Portugal) and an average of 42 thousand people on the stadium, it's hard not to feel the pressure, having only been 1 time national champions in the past 14 years and only reaching once the CL quarter finals. Football is discussed here all day, 7 days a week and Benfica, having more fans than all the other Portuguese teams combined, has been a too bigger cross to bear for many talented players. However, it may also be said that this is the kind of environment where the best players thrive on. So I dunno.

I did not say that he was worse than Di Maria, the fact is that Di Maria was more expensive and he shined in the Olympics, scoring the only goal of the final. But he's also playing the usual crap for Benfica as ever - a good sub at best. We will sell him when we have a good offerI think the difference between them is that Di Maria might become a great player in another league and another team, but not here, this pressure is too much for him (and conversely to Freddy Adu).

Yep, Benfica got freddy for cheap, i think like not even a million US? But he needs to go somewhere to get playing time, to win over the teams faithfuls(which he has at benfica scoring those goals coming in as a late sub), and just have a coach put faith in him being one of the for sure starting 11.

Hes the kind of player the US needed, the one that creates plays, kinda like donovan :p
And with altidore up top the US might actually be more respectable.

I don't like to diss on my own club but if Freddy Adu can't get to the starting eleven in Benfica nor in Monaco when he's already 18/19, then I'm not seeing such a great future for him. In Europe there is much less space to play, that is why so many brazilians fail here. There a player can walk basically without running into an opposition player until he's in the middle of the opponent's half. Here pressure starts in your own midfield and it gets worse from there on.

On Di Maria, I see a guy that is able to dribble on short space 3 or 4 players and then make a stupid decision (bad shot, horrible pass, something) that relates to his immaturity; on Freddy I saw that, without the space, he wasn't able to dribble a single player. I rooted for him last year with his late goals but they didn't show nothing, it was just him in a good position scoring. What I want from him is to be a number 10, creating spaces, passing the ball, unmarking others and I don't see it in him as I see/saw in Rui Costa, Aimar and all the greats.

Btw, I saw those 4 minutes and it's exactly how he played last year. He's not going to get any better.

I think I might have to agree with Fixe. I want him to do well so badly but I think he's useless. Yeah, he looks great on the USMNT because he's one of our only creative attacking players. But that's all he does. He's a good dribbler and athletic, but there are tons of players like that in France and Portugall. Except they are way better team players, pass and cross better and are much more intelligent. Adu is just a poor man's Quaresma. Good at beating defenders off the dribble in lower levels, but not good enough to be a one dimensional player at their given skillsets. There will always be a winger with Freddy's skills who can cross better and and attack midfielder who can direct an attack better.

Adu could be sort of an effective attacking sub you might throw in when you're down against the tired defenders because of his abilities to move forward, but I don't think he's well rounded enough to do more than that. I hope I'm wrong and that he becomes a really intelligent player, good enough to hold down a starting position. I'd like to see him play for a mid tier Portugese team, I think the league fits his style better. Or maybe a lower tier French team. Some place where he's good enough to play a lot.
