Gaining optimism... still sceptical... hope for PES yet.

There are only two things that interest me when I think about PES: Gameplay and Master League.

The problem with PES2012 is PES2011. Although not every aspect of PES is bad, (a lot of it actually is very very good), there are specific areas of game play that are so bad they ruin the game. The severity of some of these problems suggest that PES2012 (or PES 2011 Official Konami Patch 1.4 as it should be known) will be, and definitely should be a glorified patch for PES 2011. And the main thing is, if these specific areas are addressed – forget graphics, boots, nets, and all this other stuff they seem to get distracted with every year – if they actually FIX the gameplay, and concentrate on gameplay like Konami used to, PES will be back with a bang for 2012.

I'm not going to say much about the curser change issue – it has been well documented elsewhere. All I will say on this is the use of the ® stick to select players just sounds likes something for Konami to mess up to me. All player selection needs to be is the closest defender directly BEHIND the ball. Nothing more, nothing less. I have a concern about the ® stick for next year but I will hold fire on this.

On both sides the AI players seem to have almost no idea what is going on around them and give over a very robotic feel when (or if) they respond. A symptom of this is how players rarely get out of the way of passes intended for a player further away, and how often the ball just hits a player without them responding, especially in attacking situations, for example from low crosses, is a symptom of this. This is a big deal to be addressed in the next game.

The players are also where the Konami description of PES 2011 as a 'simulation' has no accuracy what so ever.

Players do not or cannot shield the ball effectively with their body, and if someone just bumps another player off the ball from behind – as often happens is PES 2011, in the real world, that is called a foul. Fouls and collisions are another major let down, and are almost exactly the same as last years game. So Seabass' mention of better collision detection should be good news for the next game.

Player runs are almost non-existent and when they do happen are usually because the player them-self triggered them, and are always in straight lines – unhelpful and unrealistic. The specific mention of diagonal runs by Seabass for PES 2012, including outside overlaps is therefore very welcome.

Defender positioning and intelligence is at times poor – CB's go walkabout at times almost as badly as they did in PES 2010. Even if they have been given specific marking assignments. This has been mentioned in the bumf for PES games in the past – so a wait and see policy seems the best way forward with this one.

Fullbacks in PES2011 are probably the worst programmed players in football gaming history: They always drift inside, sometimes even ending up on the opposite flank! They never overlap, and are always caught out defensively. Basically they do none of the things a fullback is in a football team to do. Again, mentions of positioning, defending and overlapping from Seabass suggest this is being rectified which is good news.

The shooting in PES2011 is very, very bad. 99% of shots need to be placed shots to even have a chance of hitting the target. PES6's looping, floaty shooting was brought back for this years version, so they seem to have replaced bad shooting from PES 2010 with slightly less awful shooting PES's in the past. Shooting in PES4-5 is better than this. The penalty system introduced for last years game is also terrible, and if it cannot be improved, I would strongly suggest just returning to the classic system from older games. The main thing for me though is I am actually genuinely looking forward to a new PES game with anticipation rather than apprehension for the first time in years. Unlike most years where Konami spout the same old drivel when a new PES is around the corner, this time they have specifically mentioned problems that the gameplay has.

For me master league only needs three improvements:

1. Make the market more realistic: If you don't want to sell a player who is interested in moving, just allow the deadline for a response to pass and the situation is resolved – an exploit that needs to be addressed. If you almost HAD to sell Palmieri and Shimizu for example, take the money and had to buy normal players, the game would be better for it.
2. More minor leagues: I am sure Konami could get the licence or just create faximilies of minor leagues such as Belgium, Portugal, Scotland etc. this would greatly add to the experience of the game.
3. Real or close to realistic lower league teams. One of my dreams is to take a created club from the bottom of a league structure with 3-4 divisions to the top, and for it to take many seasons.

A personal request to Konami: Please can there be some very small stadiums created or creatable for PES2012. I mean 4-5000 seater stadiums.


Bring on the new season, and bring on PES2012, as a football and gaming obsessive I actually can't wait! I WANT MY PES BACK:realmad:

The R stick works well on FIFA.

And if it only selected the nearest player behind the ball, I could see it becoming a nightmare. Sometimes, I don't want to commit a centre back, and leave him to hold his position while I jockey with the CM. If I can't get hold of him because he's a foot in front of the ball and it moves to my CB instead, it would annoy me no end.

i've been on wenb forums a lot recently and read a few previews and listened to a podcast from people who've been allowed to play the game a, the feedback has been extremely positive - been finding it hard not to get my hopes up

apparently AI has been fixed - off the ball movement has been massively improved with players making intelligent and realistic runs in all directions, no more defenders catching up against quicker players, and apparently the switch player bug has been completely fixed.

I was so impressed last night when I witnessed, for the first time, a teammate near the goal duck so a shot from further out go through. Great AI. But then tonight my defender ducked to avoid stopping a pass in the box - pass made it easily through to opponent in front of goal and it was sent home. What a mistake in code. I don't know how to write these new fangled codes used in video games but I remember writing basic from my high school days; Here is a try at it
IF on defense THEN don't duck
IF on offense THEN duck.

Where do you get all of these insights? I am interested to see as much detail and videos about the game as possible. I would like to be part of bet a testing but I have no idea where to go.

Remember when you could release the control and the player would sheild the ball...well i hope this time around the use something 2 and R2 to shield....!

I agree, shielding the ball is one of the first things you learn when you are taught to play football. First touch into space, or shield the ball and look for the foul or an outlet. Basic stuff really.

I only care about Become A Legend for single player. As long as BAL and two player works nice, I'm happy. Unless they include more divisions and more leagues, ML is pointless in my opinion. And I respect anyone who disagrees, so no need to argue.
