Well, it took me long enough to get here, dinnit?
I'm in Kansas, but originally from the Los Angeles area. I'm 40 (!) and first picked up WE 6 (hmmm, that would be PES 2) a few years ago used. Once I found a name edit file and changed the "oranjes" to their proper names (for example), I got hooked. I also found WE 7 and WE 8 used, and enjoyed those as well. WE 9 (PES 5) was the first one I bought brand new, but I still went through the name edit routine using the help files at gamefaqs.
After hearing some negatives about WE/PES 2007 (PES 6) I decided to wait for PES 2008. Well, don't I look like a fool? Apparently there are even *more* flaws with the new game. So I just recently bought 2007, and having got some useful advice and info from pategato at gamefaqs, ended up here.
This game will be the first one I try an option file (once the max drive arrives, and assuming everything transfers ok), and also the first one I've played online (I had 56k dialup until about a month ago, so I'm still a bit stunned by being able to play online).
In terms of the "beautiful game", I admit I'm a relative latecomer. The first I ever heard about it (not watched it) was when Spain 82 was going on (too bad I didn't see any of it on TV). I heard about Heysel, of course, that fit the stereotype most Yanks (still) have about the game, so the American media was all too happy to devote a lot of coverage to it... then I followed Mexico 86 in the newspapers, and managed to find the final on TV, that was pretty cool. But it wasn't until 1989, when the US qualified for the World Cup for the first time in 40 years, that I was hooked. I managed to be in Europe (former Yugoslavia; Dubrovnik, Croatia to be specific) during Italia 90 and saw most of the games live on TV, including the infamous Frank Rijkaard *spit* (if you have to ask, you're probably too young, lol, G**gle it)... though I missed the final! Apparently it wasn't that great a final, though...
As far as clubs, what should've been my prime match-going years (mid-teens to late twenties) were the "Dark Ages" in the States, after the NASL had gone belly-up and before MLS came along. It was while overseas in Romania during 95-96, listening to BBC, that I fell for (*ahem*) Newcastle United. As it turned out, that was the beginning of a rocky relationship :-| But I'm still in it... HOWAY THE TOON! It's like being a Cubs fan here in the States... you hope, against all hope, that *this* is the year, and sometimes the team even gets... *this*... close... (to an FA Cup... or to the World Series)... but then they break your heart. But you forgive 'em... well, and utter a few profanities in the meantime. I still wince (but I also smile) when I hear or see Keegan's rant. I've subscribed to either Setanta Sports North America or Fox Soccer Channel over the past three years, so if anything I've become even more avid in following "footie" (I try, really hard, not to use the word "soccer") in the past few years.
For my experiences watching the game in person, the highlight is without a doubt the USA-Switzerland match at the Pontiac Silverdome during USA 94. I even brought a 13-star American flag and ran up and down the steps when the USA scored. I've never been to Britain or Ireland, so I haven't been able to watch Newcastle in person. I hope to treat myself eventually. In the meatime, there's Kansas City Wizards (stop laughing, lads...) X-D I've also seen Chicago Fire in 1999-2000 when I lived in Chicago, and while I was in Romania, Politehnica Iasi (95-96 being their one season at the top level in a long time, until 2004). I suppose that's how I knew I had the bug... even before I got to Romania I was looking forward to watching European football...
I began playing in a local Sunday league a few years ago, too, primarily because I'm in a university town (I'm in the late stages of a doctorate in geography) and there are enough international students and "Yanks who get it" to make it both possible and fun. We play in the "rec" division, which is *supposed* to be non-competitive... no slide tackling, etc. Haha, that's a laugh... that's not what it's like when we're actually in a match. As long as the elbows aren't too obvious, nobody's getting shot by invisible snipers, and one doesn't go all Joey Barton (sad, I admit... *grumble*... would've rather kept Scott Parker, though injury probs are the same), then it's mild enough for old farts like myself. I'm 'keeper, by the way. A bit short, but I make up for it with (increasing) width. I *did* stop a penalty last month... albeit it wasn't going upper-90.
So... that's probably WAY more than anyone wants to know. But hey, if I'm starting a new thread, I wanted to give a full introduction of myself. Cheers!
