I'm guessing it's an onboard videocard and you're playing from a laptop? Then the amount of memory shared from the RAM for the video card it's controlled by the settings in the BIOS. You might want to reboot and check it out, although memory alone won't do much difference.
Make sure you don't have any power saving programs on. Like in Nvidia control panel, there's an option to reduce the power being used by the GPU. Search for something similar on your PC. Also, make sure you have the correct drivers installed. Last thing would, maybe,unfortunately for you, your total video memory(=Dedicated+Shared) actually was 512 MB. And the picture above is showing the dedicated memory only.
