Help on a war game

Does anyone know of a good war game for the late 18th or 19th Centuries ? I fancy smashing Napolean about.

Something similar to Rome Total War would be good but obviously for this more recent period.

Another one - has anyone played Spartan on the PS2 ? If so whats it like ?

Huw, what you need is the entire Cossacks series. Cossacks: European Wars, is an absolute classic. The American Conquest sequels are very good too. I haven't played Cossacks II but i heard good things about it.

I tried playing Cossacks a few months ago, but it runs very fast with current processors, which could be a turn off. It was for me.

Cossacks II should be alright. Large armies, musquet fire, cannonballs flying everywhere. Dragoons, how i love those guys.

It's a real treat if you like that kind of stuff. The naval battles are immense.

Right cossacks, age of empires, those type of games are and will always be imo fucking shit. Here are the good ones out there:

Shogun: The original and some say the best. Its a good game and the expansion pack really enhances it with the Mongol invasion

Medieval: The best imo. The xpansion pack does two great things. A new map filled with vikings raids on britain and the new modding possibilities. I made one of the best mods for it. BKB super mod. Its fucking great honestly. When you play the mod you will not want to go back to the original game. Many good mods out there. My favs are Fall of Rome, Barocca's shogun mod and Hellenic total war. Also Pike and Musket is well worth a download. I'm still working on a mod for it at the moment called Age of Warlords and it looks fucking amazing and will be up for downlaod in about a month.

Rome total war: A let down for many hardcore fans. The representation of factions and the unit skins are really shit. Still a good game at times. Check the mods. EB or RTR for a good balanced Rome game and Blue Lotus for stunning graphics of an ancient oriental magic world. Hoggy has done some amazing shit.

The xpansion on the fall of the rome is alot better balanced and worth trying. Also Alexander download expansion is great. The historical campaigns are really great. All the battles being outstanding imo and really hard in the bargain

Medieval II total war: An amazing game. Great skins, well balanced, the diplomatic engine is poor though but the game is quite simply on the greatest and most addictive games ever.

He wants games set in the Napoleonic era. Cossacks and Europa Universalis are the only ones that i know of.

Cossacks is the best in that genre.

But do you like it compared to the total war series Muad? I always found them poor second division attempts at a strategy game. Pike and Musket covers the cosack period well and Napoleonic Total War is a great mod also. I would just buy medieval then the VI expansion and download those mods instead

Of course they are nowhere near the Total War series, but he was asking for a game that focuses on that period. Besides, Cossacks is an RTS. You build and fight in the same map, and it's an old game. The graphics were nicer than the old Total War games, which is why it was attractive to me. It wasn't a bad game when it comes to the fighting, much better than any AOE, which, for the record, i never liked.

Now that you mention it, the Napoleonic Total War mod would be his best bet.

He could also buy Medieval II and play that until a Napoleonic mod is created, which i'm sure will be.

I have gone off the idea of taking on Napolean, just for a bit anyway. First I need to get some practice using my Redcoats to smash some poor defenceless Zulus and then move on to take on Afghanistan.

Disciplined troops against defenceless ones is what I am after :)

I have happily pounded the shit out of native armies with cannon and musket and then send in my cavalry and sword and bucklers to ruthlessly slaughter them. I don't normally find genocide amusing but its as funny as shit in this game. You just can't help laughing insanely as they run and are getting hacked and sliced in droves. I often wank myself unconscious

I prefer mopping up with light cavalry armed with crossbows, bows, javelins or muskets.

I love the way they shoot and reload as they chase.
