Jon Murphy Comments...

"FIFA has the atmosphere, the crowds and certain licences we don't - and everybody knows they've got better commentary than us. I can't see that changing. And some of the stuff they're doing with the collisions looks great, depending how it works as you actually play.." - Jon Murphy

Quite frankly Jon, I find that statement pathetic. It almost suggests that FIFA have the exclusive rights to have atmosphere and crowds. Fifa has the licences, fair enough, but there are many good commentators they could get but never seem to bother.

With regards to atmosphere and crowds, this should be one of the easiest parts of the game to get right, it doesn't require clever AI programming or anything like that, it's just some sound files triggered at the right times, and simple graphics, animations and effects for the crowd, it's not like they have to interact with players or the ball.

Of course the gameplay is what matters and it's sounding like they've done a cracking job which is great news. However to just discard the rest as if it's not that important or worth the effort is very disappointing as for real football fans it's the small touches that make a difference.

When did jon say that?

Jon was at the CVG UK HQ yesterday, where he revealed that he believes that PES will "smash" FIFA, in terms of gameplay, at least.

"I really do believe that the offering we've got this year will pull some fans back from the competition. Perhaps we'll see another year when people buy both games, but after six months, we want to make sure they trade-in only one of them - and it's not ours.

FIFA has the atmosphere, the crowds and certain licences we don't - and everybody knows they've got better commentary than us. I can't see that changing. And some of the stuff they're doing with the collisions looks great, depending how it works as you actually play.

"But if you want pure gameplay, I think we'll smash them this year. We've got so many things going for us, but just the lightness of touch and the way the players move independently is fantastic. You notice it instantly.

"You can put the pad down and see your team's movement as individuals. I really hope we can get the demo out to people as soon as possible, because it's all very well me talking about these things - it's when you play it that you see instantly.

"We don't want everyone, it's not about that - we want the front runners, the opinion formers, the players who tell their friends "you've got to check out PES this year". We want to bring them back, and I think we can."

oh, i see. well, it is hard for konami to implement new commentatory as they will have to say the same line of commemtatory but cant they just copy how fifa make if
sound more fluent and for the stadium, konami probably don't know how to

I do have forums.

And it's cool mate. I just didn't want people to harass you for not having a source. Posting a link always helps when you're copying and pasting quotes, etc.

Ah, so you do, not sure how I missed that. Would be good if you could link your forum profile to any comments you make on a news story.

Sorry for turning this into an OnlyProEvo thread!

I like his honesty, I will only be buying pes 2012 so not concerned about fifa comparisons. Happy konami have focused on gameplay and I'm sure the game will feature attention to detail aesthetically and will look more realistic than fifa.

I would love konami to improve audio though, plus OP I wouldn't throw a hissy fit just yet konami still have time to improve these areas don't take his comments too literally, I find it more refreshing than him telling us what we want to hear.

Couple of things, firstly most of us are hardcore PES players and have been for years, we accept that FIFA is the glossier product but that PES ultimately has the better gameplay - although glitchey. Secondly, who really cares what Jon thinks?

THE ONLY problem about pes is the animations- they aint fluid and agile enough. movements are fake, they go down slowly, it just aint fast and that is the reason you can't do your own celebrations on pes unlike fifa because of slow animations so that is one area they are need to spend on their time

@sminky

Murphy is just a puppet, at the same time he shows passion for the product which is all I can ask for someone in his position.

I liked the smash em fightin talk, go on murphy:situation:

Also, I've seen on replays, players limbs striking the ball through the body of a player, Lucas scored two goals against me where his foot passed through the knee of my player to score it. Collision detection would be nice on PES.

The main animations that irritate me are the stumbling animation and the falling flat on your face after making a pass animation.

More variation in animations when striking the ball would also be nice, but for me animations are not everything.

And what sminky said as well regarding collision detection

fifa added player impact engine meaning players won't go thorugh players as they are 3d whilst pes animations are still 2d. they are improved in pes 2012 as they have added a collision thing however i am 100% you will still see those glitches.
i remember palmieri was holding the cup and it went through his body!

Secondly, who really cares what Jon thinks?

I do. Especially at a time like this, where there is limited information to discuss, to an extent.

He's a great guy too, and it's always interesting to hear what the team leader thinks about PES.

Tbh, I think there's a reason Jon feels cocky about the gameplay part of pes, and the reason is that he just knows that they have finally nailed it this year.. atleast the ai part of gameplay..

And even the previews of this game are lookin good, so I think this year will be a gooooodyear

Maybe Konami should go back to making SNES games. Leave the sports to someone like 2K that can make a quality product.

Agree about collision detection. It ruins the hard work of the player models when my striker's hand goes through the tiny winger's head...
