New Slim PS2 - PSTwo

PSTwo

After a few days of intense speculation, Sony has confirmed the wide-held suspicions about the remodelled PS2: which has not yet been officially dubbed PSTwo (and judging by pictures of the box, perhaps it won’t be). It’s smaller and lighter and pretty much what had been expected.

In the words of David Reeves, president of SCEE, "We did it for Playstation and now this time for PlayStation 2. This totally redesigned, network ready model will demonstrate that PlayStation has once again the design flair and innovation that has made PlayStation the world's best loved and most successful games console."

Apart from the general liposuction; there have also been nips and tucks of a more functional variety. The network port has been built in which, on the downside, means that there’ll be no room for any additional HDD. Somewhat shamefully, there are also still only two controller ports. Although Sony has made the old multitap device obsolete in the redesign, it hasn’t made any compensation for that: in fact, an additional purchase of a multitap Mk II will be required to indulge in 4 player frolics on the PSTwo.

Another notable alteration is that the PSTwo uses a top-loading disc mechanism rather than a sliding tray. Although this does economise on space, it’s a slightly surprising move as that could potentially allow for pirated games to be played with the use of boot-discs. There is the distinct possibility, however, that Sony has addressed this issue elsewhere in the design.

The PSTwo will be lanched in Europe and the US on 1st November, following in Japan a couple of days later. The cost? A quite reasonable 149 Euros, which is around the £100 mark. If you’re in the market for a new Playstation 2, it’s sure to be a tempting offer.

It's basically a smaller ps2 ? Ridiculous. I shall not be purchasing, this attempt by Sony to grab the last crumbs left on the plate.

Yeah, like when they released the PSOne.

I can't see the logic in bringing this out, I doubt anybody with a PS2 is going to purchase it. One of the main drawbacks is that current PS2 multitaps can't be used with PsTwo.

I dont think i'll bother. Sony has pissed me off in recent years, what with the original PS2 being underpowered from the outset, no internal memory, lack of 4 joypad ports, crap online support etc etc.... Sony are just a bunch of money grabbers now. There was no need for a smaller PSOne, and PSOne multitaps should have been compatible with the PS2, the Silver PS2 was a cheap cash in. I would rather Sony put their money into making the PS3 something to look forward to.

Anyway its XBOX for me now, this is the console PS2 should have been.

PSOne multitaps should have been compatible with the PS2

They are. Atleast, all the 3rd party ones I have are.

The original PS2 underpowered? Mate, you lost alot credibility right there with that comment. Look as GT3 as an example of just how underpowered the PS2 is (sic). How old is GT3 now? And it still looks better than almost all other console games to date. And lets not get started on GT4.

By no internal memory, I presume you mean no HDD, yes? Fair point, but far from crucial.

Crap online support? No, not right. Sure, the sony online component is not as tight as MS's as far I'm concerned, but its no Counter-Strike either.

And don't forget, the PStwo is not targeted at existing PS2 owners, but is aimed at grabbing the last 10 or 11 people in the world who don't own one. It's nice and thin, would undoubtably be quiter than my one, and would fit in between (and look good at the same) my 5.1 receiver and DVD players.

That's what Sony are aiming at, I think it's fair to say.

*edit: As for the PS3, Sony have confirmed Blu-Ray discs for the media, which is fantastic news. And I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that they have ensured (not confirmed) PS1 and PS2 backwards compatibility, which will be a marvel of technology if they realistically pull it off, without handicapping the PS3 too much.

not to be taken seriously
I didn't believe it from the first shots, if they're press releases they are crap, but ash's link looks kosha. I reckon it looks sweet, and is probably aimed at all the brat-kids with rich parents to buy them one for the car.

I won't buy one but it is damn sexy! Why was PS2 so f/&&//ing shabby in the first place as mentioned previously by elfinke?

Looks like a PS2 crossed with an iron - think about it.........

However cool it may look I'm not going to buy it - not as essential purchase and probably downright useless seeing as I have a PS2. Waste of money.

I'd buy one this very instant, if I didn't already own a PS2. The reason? Mine sounds like a hoover vacuum, doesn't read all dual-layer DVDs, doesn't have built in IR for a remote and doesn't read DVD-R's.

But like I keep harping on about, this PStwo isn't aimed at preexisting PS2 owners, but is designed to get the last few people in. And with PES4, GT4 and GTA:SA all coming out for xmas, what a gift eh?

I am intrigued very much by this. I think the flip-top lid looks superb and excellent way to combat piracy but where theres a will, theres away. I dont think i'll que up the night before to buy it. If i come across one at the right time, i wont hesitate to splash the cash.

i wish they would bring them out earlier, they always bring out smaller versions years after the origional console's release! id love to swap my PS2 for that though, as for the XBox 2 comming out in about a years time, its going to be about the size of a large CD walkman! possibly

The new mini PS2

Just got 1 today, and all I can say is WOW!!
Those people who think it's purely a marketing scam by Sony think again.
Apart from being absolutely humungous in an ugly, Jan Molby kind of way, the old machine had turbine fans in it the size of Finland, that were like living under the flight path of Heathrow when in mid-game or DVD.
Good news is, the new one's not only wayhayhay smaller (slightly bigger than a DVD case) it's also quieter. In fact, it's damn near silent.
Only downside so far is that the little fokker gets rather warm. Must've been what those fans were for ;)
In short, if you use your PS2 to play DVD's, then beg, steal, whatever. Get yourself one. You won't regret it.
