Now, I was lucky enough to get the game a day early today via a good ol' website that seems to send me games a day early. I'm sure some of you already know what that site it is.
Anyway, I've been going at the game for most of the day, I played the demo, so I was familiar. I'm quite stubborn when it comes to computer games as I feel bad playing against the CPU on anything other than its hardest difficulty. I really don't mind loosing to the CPU on the hardest difficulty, just as though it was a fair loss, but 9 times out of 10 on PES and FIFA, you normally get cheated.
So for my first 10 games...I played on the default difficulty - REGULAR, just to get back into the rhythm of things on Pro Evo...As for the past 2 or so weeks, I've been locked into the very very surprisingly good FIFA 12.
Now the funny thing is I detested the FIFA 12 demo and I honestly thought PES 2012 was shaping up to be the better game, to the point of I was going to boycott FIFA altogether, I had no intention of buying the full game on the basis of the demo, but I was going to get only Pro Evo this year around. But as usual I fell into the web of wanting to play a game with my mates until PES came out. So FIFA was a very risky gamble, but the full game for the first time in a LONG LONG LONG while with FIFA really took me by surprise. The full game itself is superb and I do recommend it, but I won't waste anymore of your time talking about that game and why I recommend it.
I'm here to talk about PES 2012.
You see, I really really really don't see much improvement from the PES 2012 demo to the full game at ALL....apart from being able to use all the teams, of course.
And while the football game itself feels more "alive" on the pitch compared to FIFA. EA stepped up their game for the full release, but like I said at the point of the demo, I disliked it very much.
Having played Pro Evo ever since they've been coming out, the one thing that always set it apart from the (tosh at the time) FIFA, was the SHOOTING. Everybody I know who used to play Pro Evo back then, said much the same. You had this ping like connection with the ball when shooting, it felt solid, rewarding and responsive. You felt that feeling of connection with the ball, pad in hand!
As the years passed on, Konami improved other areas of the game, but the the things that always gave Pro Evo the edge over FIFA, for year upon year, are virtually gone/broken this year. UNLESS THEY FIX IT.
Another thing that Pro Evo was renowned for was dribbling and being able to beat players with quick, agile movements. Last years PES was pretty much impossible to achieve such things whilst dribbling, especially combined with the one thing both football games can't get just right. PRESSURE.
But PES 2011 still had shooting in tact, after the patch that fixed the floaty-ness physiques of the ball. Of course you see some stupid scissor kicks from outside the box, but the shooting felt connected.
PES 2012 WHAT HAS HAPPENED?
The shooting is so slow, eratic, unresponsive and un-direct it keeps telling me the same thing over and OVER AGAIN. WHY?
The shooting for me is just not right and no where near acceptable. Gone of the days of the thunderbolts that broke the net, its all very tip-toey and panzy now. If you dare hold that shoot button....it's flying over the bar like a 10p fly away! LITERALLY. There is no weight or power!
The game is too much about TAPPING buttons. Even the good old placed shot feels broke. 9 times out of 10, when you shoot, it directs it self wherever also.
It feels terrible. The ping/connection with the passing is much the same, it feels very slow and off-tempo. I was expecting some improvement over the demo at the very least, but it seems like zilch.
The game is also very stop-start I find, and that little graphic on goal kicks will drive even the most patient, POTTY!
Goalkeepers are also useless as always, yet they apparently "worked" on them in that update?
Positives;
- Match atmosphere
- The game feels "alive" on and OFF the pitch, FIFA feels very boring in comparison
- Player movement of the ball is pretty good and way ahead of FIFA
Negatives;
- Ball physics especially on shooting and passing are terrible. FIFA's ball physics this year are tremendous, especially the LT + B (or L2 + circle) volleys! (You get that connection like back on the old Pro Evo's, first time ever for a FIFA game for me!!!)
- GOALKEEPERS hardly hold onto ANYTHING, they also make stupid decisions when directed to come out, normally resulting in a goal. (When holding Y or triangle) they will just run at the attacker and stand still!!!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I hope (in fact they BETTER) fix these issues in the next update, because if they do, it is a better game than the surprisingly brilliant FIFA 12 this year. If they don't, and totally ignore what the true PES fans are saying, then it is not even worth the pleasure of gracing your console.
As it stands, PES 2012 is unfinished.
