PES5 Impressions thread

Ok, now i've played both these games WE9 and PES5. WE9 was the first and only game i've play of the WE series. But for PES series, i have played them all (almost).

I already did a impresion of WE9. And im not in the mood for antoher the writing of another impression. But I can say I was very impressed with both these games. First I thought that the WE and PES games were almost identicaly the same, but that is very far from the truth.

when playing WE9, i noticed the gameplay was alot slower than in PES4.
The fouls were obscure at some times, the ref was way to whistle happy. When playing in ML in WE9 at 5* i problably got 10-15 shots on goal avg, while the com only got 2-4 shots on, and half of my games they ended in draw!!! Was getting veryvery pissed of at that, and the ref. Other than that, the game is very good.

5 days ago i played my first game in PES5, and the difference from this game and WE9 is not so litle as i thought. The gameplay is faster (but slower than in PES4) and the ref is not the whistle happy ref!!! That is what maid me like this game more than WE9. But it is a a different challenge, may be a bit harder. The PES5 is something of a more arcade version of WE9. Both games are VERYVERYVERY good, but i would recomend PES5 rather than WE9, because of the ref, faster gamplay (more fun in 2players games), and the rosters for 2005/2006 teams are up and running, e.g. west ham in premiership and so on.

Ok not going to have this any longer, just go and buy either one, and play til your fingers bleed. These are the 2 best games i've played on ps2.

You want arcade? Go buy FIFA!

Fifa doesnt compare to the physics of PES. I was merely suggesting for some fun times rather than "serious" realism, it could be fun to have the option available. For example being able to choose fouls or the amount of fouling while playing against a human player could make it a lot of fun, in that type of scenario.

I love PES and as I mentioned no other game compares to it, but one example of the annoying aspect of fouling, twice in one half i didnt even use any button to pressure, the slightest touch and it was penalty, it annoyed the hell out of me as this would not be so in real life, if thats what we are simulating here, nor any previous version of the game. Another time i was steam rolled and play went on.

I have played three seasons of ML and it is very different to PES4, so it would not be right to compare, its almost a new game altogether not an improvement over PES4. The PC version though seems to have corrected these problems. We'll wait and see.

My Impressions of PES5 (these apply to both the PC and Xbox version).

I feel both really excited and slightly dissapointed in this version.

Excited because they have really taken a good step in the "right" direction (for me) and made the game more realistic in pace and movement.

Dissapointed since they still haven't implemented analog support for long passes and manual passes (and this is for a game which is native to the PS2, not PC where 50% of users might be using keyboard and no analog controllers). Sure there is a longpass mode (changed in the control settings, "long pass mode" 1-5)) where the passing is aided slightly to get the ball to the right receiver (or what the game thinks is the one you want to pass to), but I hate that myself. If choosing manual mode (mode 5), all lob (long) passing is 8 way, and so is the manual Right-stick ground and air passes aswell). This really ruins the mood since such a precise sport suffers a great deal from it).

Also, I feel that they have made long air passes (Circle button on the PS2, "B" on Xbox) and Lofted Through balls really bad.
Basically, the high lob passes' trajectory is now faster and lower, and looks more real. However, since there is no way to change the trajectory yourself (whether you want a fast and low, or high and more slow chip pass) these changes feel like they are for the worse. If they could somehow implement a trajectory control in how much you tilt the analog stick when passing (tilt it a little bit = high trajectory lob pass, tilt alot = harder, faster and lower high pass). As it is now one trajectory has to apply to everything, and this new lower one rarely works.

As for the High Through ball, it is also lower and ALOT faster and harder to catch. Where the previous versions featured a high through pass which was quite high and stopped fairly close to the initial touchdown mark, these new ones really go. If you are standing just outside the penalty area, there is no way to, like in previous versions, lift the ball in for someone to head or such. If you stand at the penalty area, the high through pass will land somewhere in the crowd behind the goal. Again, some trajectory control, maybe a system with:

The longer the Y button is pressed = the harder and longer the pass. So just tapping it would make a high and gracious pass landing just where the player has run to, as opposed to now where the ball usually lands several meters away from the player and requires a great deal of time to catch up to).

Of course this would make it impossible to hold the Y button and passing to a distant teammate and not the one closest to the ball, but maybe that could be worked out by simply making it so that for passing to distant players you simply had to double tap the Y button (first tapping it, then releasing it, then pressing again and golding to determine the "strenght" and trajectory of the pass as described above).

Does anyone agree or disagree, based on the PC demos and early Xbox version?

I'm hoping they sort out the high through balls in PES5 because they are shite in the demo. Sometimes all you need is to lob it lightly between two defenders and it ends up going directly to the keepers hands.

That was exactly what I meant. Glad I am not the only person who got a bit bothered by this.

What I ultimately really lack is more control in PES. Analog control of pass directions, and alot more control over pass and lob trajectories. Since PS2 and XBOX both have pressure sensitive controls it should be possible, and if one has to take in account PC and Gamecube, then atleast a system for controlling trajectories by how much you are tilting the analog stick when the pass is made. Could work for shots aswell, if you would want a lob show, moderate power and full tilting of the stick would give you a high lob-type show, where little tilting would give the shot a much lower trajectory incase you really need to kick it hard. As it is now, hardness of shot and height of show are a bit too related for me. Surely in the real world if you give a shot more power the ball tends to gain more height, but what I really miss in PES are the groundhog-killers, rock-hard shots traveling just above the ground. WOuld be sweet if a trajectory-control would enable you to do those kinds of shots at will. Obviously, more power on the gauge for low trajectory shots would mean more likelyhood of the ball ending up way outside the goal or straight to the keepers arms in the middle of the goal.

Been playing WE9 (patched) extensively since August. Picked up PES5 yesterday. Here's my inital impressions as compared to WE9 after a 5 games or so. I'll only comment on the major issues I think. Not bothered about new teams/rosters and such. Impressions from ML matches.

Presentation - About the same except for the background and music.

Display - 50hzPAL or 60hz NTSC?

50hz is very fast and arcadey. 60hz is better game speed, but felt a wee bit slowdown (occasionally).

Takes ages to load screens/cutscenes as compared to WE9.

Gameplay.

Immediately I felt the gameplay is faster than WE9 in both modes. Although 60hz seems to balance a bit better, theres some occasional slowdown on freekicks that I noticed.

Defences are not as packed as WE9 (for both your team and the opposition) Theres lot more space to play the ball into and they defend higher up the pitch.

Defending is tighter than WE9, and dribbling seems less efective.

Less fouls blown by ref, with more advantage plays. This could be becuse of the following.

I noticed that instead of getting stuck in or jostling for the ball, collisions are more pronounced inPES5. Therfore with body contact you tend to get pushed off the ball stumble more. More bouncy. Therfore the AI wins often. When you're defending, and pressure the AI, the ball bobbles more, but usually the AI is quicker to react.

Animations seem a bit jerky than WE9, and I suspect that the animation frames have been reduced. Hard to tell for sure, but porlly realize after more playtime.
Also I noticed that players ball controll a bit wonky. In WE9, with top players and application
and ussage of R1 or R2 you had good control of the ball. In PES5 using the same methods players seem having trouble cotrolling balls.
Ball seems a wee bit lighter than WE9 to me. I.e more float. Shooting bout the same.

Crossing seem to be better (in accuracy), but speed, trajectory identical to WE9.

Thru ball, seems the same to me. (rumoured to be fixed). Ground thru passes seems better, but can be also due to the fact that defences are not so tight adn higher up. If you have mastered the trick of lofted thrus in WE9, it feels the same here.

Trajectory of these high thru balls are still the same, the best IMO was in WE8LE. Just perfect pace , high with loads of backspin. Always dropped sweetly for the forwards run.

Accum. Fatigue seems to be less, than WE9a and palyers can last a few matches more before needing to be rested.

Still inconclusive on which is better, but after another week or so hopefully can tell.

Any specific questions reagrding gameplay, I don;t mind trying out and letting y'all know.

Won't entertain questions about stats,rosters,teams.
I dont have net adaptor, so online play is a no-no.

Cheers all.

Use This Formation To Stop Fatigue

hi guys right last night i was playing pes5 with real madrid (MASTER LEAGUE) and we all know about the fatigue thing. sometimes when u use ur good players they get fatigued after 1 or 2 games. So what i found out is if u use the 3-5-2 formation with counter attack settings and then put the players back to the positions u like (remember to keep 3-5-2 formation) then only a couple of ur players will get fatigued i had ronaldo, zidane, baptista and a few others play 3 or 4 games in a row. TRY IT

You can also sub them in before the 75th minute or so, unless you dont have a comfortable lead. You can close your defence when you sub your starplayers, so that you can rely on counterattacks.

one question how do you people get the game 2 weeks before it comes out?

I think most people's opinions on the game comes from the PC demos and from the early version which can be downloaded for the Xbox.

Now, obviously the early Xbox version (which is from early september) is uncomparable since it is far from finished. But considering it quite resembles the PC demos (that are newer in date) in some aspects (high through balls are the new lower faster type which suck imho, for example) I find it valid for general gameplay comparisons. But of course we will all have to wait for the final retail versions to hit the stores untill anything conclusive can be said. As stated by people there even seems to be some differences between the 2 PC demos released (one without commentary and one more recent with commentary) so alot can happen in little time. Usually demos are made from a finished version and doesn't differ from the final product at all, but in this case it seems to be different.

i have to say i love the demo, i did notice that about the through balls that are a lot quicker

Loving the long range shooting feels a lot more crisp as opposed to the floaty air shots on previous pes series

Im not too sure about the first touch in this game..They are so unpredictable?!!!May be I just need a bit more practice..its very frustrating. All the other pro games gave u the ability to control ball first time..now they always knock it ahead?

Completely hooked on this game now, had to change the way I play loads, more timed tackles, I seem to be using long pass more and crossing in the air for potential volleys, chip shots are now harder, dribbling is more skilled, the first touch is great, sometimes you pull off proper sweet looking plays.

Anyone who's looking forward to it you won't be dissapointed, just finished my 1st year on master league as arsenal, gonna try n buy ronaldhino woo.

HOw did you get the game it is not even out yet?

Just wonder whether the game is similar to PES4. In WE9, I was kind of disappointed with the fact that when the CPU is losing they do not attack that much like they do in PES4. In PES4, CPU are pretty mean in their attack and will go all out to get the equalizer. PES4 is so damn good that I am still playing it despite having the Japanese Version of WE9. I am not saying that WE9 is inferior to PES4, it is just that I can't stop playing the latter because of the attack factor. I hope PES5 will be like PES4 where CPU will turn on the heat when they are down.
