They've fixed the long passing system from #4 which really used to piss me off - many a time i'd be aiming a long pass upfield only for my player to inexplicably twat it back to the 'keeper.

Now the long passing is an absolute dream, i love it. In fact i'd say the much-improved AI of your opponents obliges you to incorporate long passing into your strategy, whereas in previous PES incarnations you could get away with short passes only.

Also the weight and physics of the ball feel spot on. I personally found it hard to score with long range shots in #4, not impossible but far easier to send wingers to the byeline and cut it back. I've already scored some cracking goals and am certain that, as my skill improves, i will score some unbelievable goals. The animation of players taking shots is fantastic and makes the replays worth watching.

The only gripe i have is that they've kept that ridiculous stripy pitch from #4 which makes seeing the ball an eye-watering affair. I usually quit the match and restart if i get that pitch.

Agreed with everything of the above. Haven't seen that ghastly stripy-pitch in PES5 yet though, but i'm sure it's in there if you say so. (urgh i shudder to think of it in PES4. i always skipped it)

The long passing system has changed for the better, and i agree that it changes the gameplay. Somehow it has become much more realistic as attackers seek out opportunities in a more realistic way. A long pass doesn't always have to go directly at the forward's feet (which usually results in the defender interfering) but instead midfielders can send it out longer/wider so that a fast-enough scorer can run for the ball.

Also i agree fully with the ball dynamics/physics. After the first time i send out a blistering shot with Rooney in an england friendly, i was sold. The ball actually looks like it has that weight and that it hurts. The keeper barely kept it out but fell on his arse because of the power of the shot... That kind of dynamics simply had me grinning!
It also encourages me more into trying shots from outside the box, especially with midfielders. Definite improvements, i say.

i would just like to say edit mode is vastly imroved, i was very dissapointed in pro 4 because konami made a total cock up of edit mode and it wet tits up, but pro 5 u can do just about anything and it's great, lets hope they don't change it for the worse in pro 6!

I simply love this game!!!

I have been waiting for Konami to put out a challenging soccer "sim" for years now, being devoted to the iss and later pes series. Finally it has arrived! A game where I feel genuinly challenged by the com team, and not winning every game on 6 star level at least 4-0. Now i can hardly score goals on 5 stars! It's superb!

Also, the tactics of soccer come so much more into play in this iteration of the series. For the first time ever, it really matters what formation and what tactics you use. And sometimes, I even have to change my formation according to the opposing team. I've never had to do that before in order to be able to score and more importantly: Keep the opposing team from scoring!

This game is top class, hope I never really master it ;)

Its cool as well how players pick up injuries when they exhaust, the CPU are better @ free-kicks, i have conceded a few free-kicks, one from 30 yards out against Bulgaria!, ive seen more than a few hit the bar and saved by the keeper

 I love it, Ive started a league with liverpool and its amazing, when you play rubbish teams like west ham they tend to sit back against you so you can play 4-4-2 but if your playing Chelsea they go for it and i always seem to play 4-5-1 with crouch uptop its cool because tactics really do matter, One thing that is annoyin apart from the crowd thing is that England and Spain are the best international teams, Whilst teams like france and brazil are just medicore:unsure:

Brazil mediocre? Are you playing the same game as the rest of us?
Adriano, Ronaldinho, Kaka, Ronaldo, Juninho, Carlos for starters. Any teams with players who can compare to them?

have you looked at there rating it is about as good as swedens, whats that about, Henry, Zidane, Viera, Trezeguet, Makelele, Pires thats France, On the game Carlos's free kick tacking ability is so over rated, you can get it on target most the time within 40 yards

Don't know if anyone has posted this but when you are 1 on 1 with the keeper what has happened to side footing it casually by the keeper?. Everytime I get a 1 on 1, the striker or whoever seems to hammer it by the keeper instead of a sid footed shot. Also when you get a 1 on 1, every player who has the ball seems to have a powerful shot

R2 after your shot is a placed shot 1 on 1, I think.

Here's my review of PES5, I am going to report on my first three games (I've played more now):

Note: All matches were played on five-star.

Manchester United 1-2 Juventus

As soon as I put the disc into my PS2, I could feel that this game was
going to be different and I was right. Straight from the kick-off, I realised the new dribbling system. It was a bit annoying at first but in the end I got used to it. The CPU made many through-balls and have since this match. The through-balls seem to be their primary method of attack. Anyway, my goal came from a rare fumble by Gianluigi Buffon. It was a throw-in on the left, Heinze threw the ball to Giggs and Giggs ran towards the touchline before putting in a cross. The cross had late curl on it and I think this fooled Buffon. He tried to go for the ball but fumbled it. The ball flew up in the air and Thuram, Van Nistelrooy and Cannavaro all went up for it. It hit Thuram's shoulder and went up in the air again. This time it deflected of that pack of players and fell kindly to Cristiano Ronaldo, who was level with the penalty spot and shot the ball into an empty goal as Buffon was recovering from his fumble and getting up. I was surprised by this fumble, especially as it was by Buffon. Juventus levelled in the second half with a Del Piero goal. It was a through-ball by Nedved and my defence was too slow. Del Piero cut inside from the left and placed the ball past the oncoming Van Der Sar. In the end they won it. It was a cross from the right and my defenders failed to clear it. Del Piero stepped past both Ferdinand's slide and Van Der Sar's dive and placed it into the empty goal. With hardly any time left, I didn't recover.

Chelsea 0-1 AC Milan (AET)

This game was a pretty drab and boring game but it showed how well organised the CPU can be when it comes to defending. AC Milan's defence consisted of Cafu, Stam, Nesta and Maldini, so it was hardly a surprise. But when you are Chelsea, you expect to breach even the best defences(?) Anyway, this game also showed the quality of the CPU's finishing. Gilardino shot a half-volley, on the run and with his left foot, from the left side of the penalty spot. It rattled the post (the post might still be shaking as we speak) with even Cech beaten. Their goal came from another half-volley. Cafu played a sort of chip pass to the right side of the penalty spot which Kaka let bounce a couple of times and unleashed a powerful shot into the roof of the net from a tight angle. Game over, no question.

Arsenal 2-1 Inter

At last, a win! This match showed how you need to bring your kepper out with care or pay the penalty. It also showed how useful cutting inside is. My goal came from a simple free-kick and header. It was a free-kick from the right, not too far out. Henry curled it in and Reyes did a sort of bending-down header, where he bent his knees and got under the ball, into the roof of the net. The marking was appalling and had Favalli moved forward a inch or two instead of daydreaming the goal would have been off-side. Inter equalised quickly after a mistake by Jens Lehmann. It was a through-ball, chased by Adriano and Sol Campbell. Lehmann tried to come out but Adriano beat him to the ball but was closed down by Campbell. The ball went loose and Lehmann tried to kick it clear but the ball was took off him by Campbell. Campbell tried to clear it but it went loose again and as Lehmann dived at the ball but missed and was down on the grass, Adriano had a open goal and socred but still had a lot to do as he was outside the box, on the left and at a tight angle. I then changed my team around and played Reyes just off Henry and slightly on the right. He impressed with a few chances but was closed-down too often by defenders. I eventually won it when a corner from Henry deflected off a pack of players and fell loose and Ljungberg was left with a easy chance. I learnt from this game that against certain teams, you should play your best dribbler on the wing. I had put Hleb on the right wing and he had impressed, beating defenders easily and putting in good crosses.

Summary

The game has improved in areas from PES4 but it needs itself certain improvement in areas. The game is now more quicker and the referee is slightly stricter. Dribbling is now harder but more rewarding and the CPU has mastered through-balls and long passing. The keeper is more likely to come out and go for the ball from crosses, thus increasing the probability of fumbles but decreasing the possibility of goals from headers. Heading itself is much harder and you are beaten more often than not in the air by the CPU. The CPU defence is more harder to break down and pace is now not a primary option when you want to beat an opponent. However, all passing is more effective, when beating opponents. The midfield of the CPU is also quite solid but they can misplace the odd pass just like you or me. The strikers are more lethal, so watch out. If you have a slow defence, you may be in trouble.
The commentary is a bit better as well and more accurate but still not good enough. I like the new options you have in all modes now. The edit mode has been improved a lot and the master league mode is still very good.

Graphics: 10/10
Sound = Music: 8/10, Commentary: 6/10, Crowd: 7/10
Gameplay: 9/10
Lifespan: 9/10
Overall: 10/10 (except for a few imporovements here and there)
--------------------------------------------------------------------

The master league mode has been quite difficult for me. I'm playing on five-star with default players. The first match I won 1-0 (thanks to a Huylens penalty in injury time) but since then I haven't been doing well. However, in my last game, I changed my formation to 4-1-3-2. I played my DM just inside the centre circle and in my half and I played the wingers as close to the touchline and the end of the green area near the strikers as I could. This worked well as I lead 2-0 into half-time. But the CPU found gaps in my defence and punished my slow defence, with Olisadebe getting a brace. The final score was 2-2. My defence is lacking in strength and speed so I will be making changes when the transfer windows opens.

OK my mind has changed. I reckon that it takes a bit of time to get used to pes5. Its just different... somehow. Possibly the best player is Nedved. He has a brill shot. Who does everyone else think is the best player???

Ok this is my first post since getting PES5 on the 20th. And i can't really find fault with the game (except the crowd glitch but, hey). For me everything is near perfect - the pace of the game, the passing and especially the shooting. I love the fact that you can really drill a shot now. Now off to play some more. Oh and the official guide is superb too.

I find that the computer is pretty good at playing keep ball which really :realmad: pi*ses me off :realmad: ...and that's jus on three stars!
Realistic I suppose but I just hate it when I don't have the ball in PES!

Dont play 3*. Play 5* instead. Three stars is very defensive and it might be boring as well. Five star is very attacking and more fun. When AI attacks it does open up in the defence for us to attack.

My Impressions Of The New PES

:D ... to master a whole new game.. where to start!
The new intro certainly kicks things off well for Konami and although there are other improvements needed its a series thing rather than Individual game.
The opening matches i've played on PES5 have given me the most enjoyment i've had from a console game since.. well pes4.
I waited for an extra day to play ML as i wanted the pesfan option file transferring.. its a long story and is off topic in this thread.

Finally.. I get to play ML. The layout on screen is virtually the same as PES4, with a few different colours and options here and there. I keep pressing [] on the ML main menu to go to save but you cannot do this on PES5.. I love the new topics section at the end of every game!
To me it would suggest Konami might use this in future versions of PES to release match day news and transfers.. it would be very good if they did.
My ML campaign as PES United is going well, I've played seven games and won five and drawn two. My striker Ordaz is out injured for 4 weeks though and he's been the main goalscorer!
The new additions to the PES game have made it much more like real football. I admit the control system for the players takes a little match practice ( the extra touch) but.. maybe its what the series needed.
My love of the series started against a game that continues to challenge me every year a new game comes out and PES5 definately delivers.
I say in ML i havent lost yet but most of my victories have been 1-0 or 2-1 the highest margin i've won by is 3-0 and that was in a cup match (i think the cpu's tails went down after the second goal).. worth noting too that when the third goal killed the game the cut scene showed the Cpu's Centre back throwing a tantrum at his team members.. which i thought was a good touch by konami.
Theres other additions too.. the main aspect of animation in the players has changed.. the shots now look amazing and yesterday in my 0-0 draw against West Brom away.. with the last few minutes Castolo received a long ball from Dodo.. chested it down and exchanged a one two pass with Ordaz.. Castolo had found room for the shot and hit a shot which flew just over the bar, the crowd were whistling at the home teams inability to close me down.. Kirkland was at full stretch fearing the net to bulge.. but the goalie animations while diving looked incredible. The major improvements in this area make the game look and feel excellent. Also the fact most of the time you can make first time passes without the ball ever being under control although doing this might catch your opposing team offguard you do give the ball away .. but this is realistic and i have no doubt konami are going the right way with the series.
Before the release of PES5 I was on the forum an awful lot I'm really sorry i havent been on lately but.. I'm sure you'll understand i wanna get back to playing pes5.
Theres loads more i could mention.... i could keep writing but i'm missing playing the ML.. so for now I have to go and play.

Dunno if this counts as an impression but i was playing my master league yesterday, i cut inside with quaresma and hit shoot... instead of using his unfavoured left he wrapped his right foot round the back of his left leg and hit a shot in the style of the harry kewel/ronaldo cross, the shot was tame but still pes5 continues to rule, ive spent ages trying to do it again but i havent been able to...

first impressions

Played the last one ALOT, PES5 seems to have expanded on a few small aspects of pes4 eg increased player physicallity and more accurate player characteristics, which is great.I also think that the players move more like actual people with improved player animation. I haven't played master league yet and am hoping that they have improved the training part as this was mind numbingly boring last time.

Dont think most of you will like this much

Have had and been obsessed with the whole PES series, and been extremely happy with them. I know alot of you have been totally loving pes5, but i just dont see where you get your ideas from. I play a huge amount of football myself and have never played with a ball with that kind of physics... it bounces 40+ yards with the right kind of deflection. Jamie Carragher can play a 40 yard pass but beckham struggles to pass 4 yards on occasions. The AI trys to hard and trys to make spectacular passes for you when you only want to pass it to the person next to you. The physics is great a few of you are saying but i just dont see the greatness, YES its better that the players can't always turn on a sixpence and turn at a 90 degree angle from a sprint (as they could in previous PES) but the players on this game have the flexibility of a cream cracker and the turning circle of a boeng 747 !! Players like cristiano ronaldo and denilson.. arguably some of the worlds most tallented dribblers, cant ride a single challenge. A fast player no longer gives you an advantage, the player with the strength will always be able to catch you and basically throw you off the ball, aaaaand mr konami man football is a contact sport, the fouls on this game a FAR too easily conceded.

Why oh why does zidane have the touch of a rapist at times, why is the power bar so sensetive... why does a player move away from a falling ball and let it bounce instead of running in to meet it with head or foot, why does the 'manual' control setting choose a player for you sometimes but then is totally dead at others, why does a goal keeper dive backwards and slightly out from goal, when a low cross comes across the 6yrd box, why can the computer predict every single dribble you make even if its a cruyff turn from a sprint, why does the heavy touch button (you know when ur sprinting and u kick it far ahead of you) make no/very little noticable difference to your players ability to sprint(this is where the 'top speed' and 'dribble speed' should come into play because ur not dribbling anymore your just chasing the ball aka. 'top speed'ing. Alot of you will say that, that last comment is crap but the thing that allows u to get around players is a mixture of the element of suprise and the fact that the other player has the flexibility of a cream cracker and the turning circle of a boeng 747, like a mentioned earlier. Why does the lifted through ball slam the ball into the keepers arms now(or at least into his area) even with passers like beckham, gerrard and lampard?

So many questions and i expect many of you will like to have an answer but im just expressing my opinion like the rest of you. I guess that this post might even be deleted if its not to the masters taste.

But you must understand that i only complain because i used to love PES so much. For all you fella's that actually play footy in real life some of you must see some understanding in what i say.

ps. does anyone have trouble finding their created players in master league mode. I created my housemates and i and i can't find them in the 'edited players' area of the transfer market.... any ideas? Each of my housemates also avid PES fans and all off the same kind of opinion.

pss. dont flame me unless you have more than your 'opinion' to throw at me, nice one.

cheers
