I second this.

If you must play Pro Evo Online, play one of the older ones or get Hamachi for direct IP gameplay.

If you are playing on PS3 or 360, then get FIFA 09. Excellent online experience and a much deeper footie experience to boot, although it does lack the cutting edge excitement feature of PES in my opinion.

PES2009 is crap online. I'm not going to bother with it, ever again. People complained about PES2008, but I thought it was not too bad, but a lot better than PES2009.

If you want to play football online, FIFA2009 is he way. There is no lag and the 10v10 is really fun.

Agreed, PES is pointless online, the lag and the teleporting ball will push you into a psychotic break, you will probably start off just really pissed off, then it will escalate into lobbing countless controllers at the walls and having to fork out on new ones, which you will also break until it becomes so extremely irritating that you start chain smoking crack just to deal with the extreme stress and frustration, after a while you will probably endup deciding wether to go for the paracetamol and liqour, or just lob your sorry ass off a high rise, Its not worth it dude. FIFA is Ok online though, not as good obviously but if online is your thing then your only choice is FIFA.

I hardly ever get a lag online. Get the odd game where there is a bit of lag but nothing to major

You all must have crap connections

I use a wired connection that shows up as highest connection possible on any other game online but when i go online with PES2009 it always shows up as a medium connection. Weird that! Ive found normal online 1 vs 1 ridiculous. Any quick match ive tried almost always has a user with a dead red connection on the other end, has super lag and always gets cancelled. Ive never got through a whole match in that mode. It sucks!
On the other hand ive just started playing the legends mode online with my BAL guy and im really enjoying it tbh. It seems to be much more solid and if you've got 4 players in on the match (including yourself) and one loses connection the match still carries on. So far ive hardly played a online legends match with a greedy player either. It seems like most people are willing to work together which i find quite refreshing. On the downside i havent yet found any way of looking at you're personal overall statistics....Ya know, like how many assists, goals etc. The only things i see are combo points and matches played stats. Better than nothing tho. Anyway, if you have broadband an the means to go online with PES2009 try out online legends mode. Its pretty cool ;)
