Pro Rage - another level

A definition: violent, explosive, expletive ridden bursts of anger caused by inexplicable moments of madness whilst "enjoying" a game of pro evolution.

We've all had it and it's arguably intrinsically linked to why the series has been enjoyed by so many for so long. These moments of madness, infuriating as they are, feed the triumphant moments where the game clicks, behaving as expected. Like running on to that cleared corner ball from deep midfield and unleashing a smashed, dipping volley past a despairing keeper from 25 + yards. Tension released in one glorious moment or one flowing move.

There's a lot of things I like about PES11 (smashed volleys back with a bang for starters) but with it I'm experiencing a whole new level of pro rage.

Cursor/player selection in this version can be excruciating. Infuriating. I want to calm down. "It's just a game"... "Breathe"... I laugh it off... it sounds sinister... I gather the ball, build up the play again, I see an opening but the opponent gets a vital knick on the ball and it spills in to open play, right in to the path of my oncoming midf... "FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK - WHY!!!!!?!!!!! WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY????!!!!??" Inexplicably my cursor has landed on every player EXCEPT the approaching midfielder. My opponent sheepishly gathers the ball (his mocking grin) whilst my midfield (apparrently paralysed wth shock of it's indicisive puppet master) try and gather their wits, leaving my defensive line's arses visibly twitching at the prospect of the inevitably well placed thru-ball.

I don't think I've seen this basic aspect of the game so hit and miss before.

And crossing?! Ok maybe Pro 10's crosses were a little too accurate but the amount of times I've put in a ball looking for that back post header only to have it fly past EVERYONE, for a throw in. A THROW IN. Now ok I've played nothing but MLO online but I've built a pretty acceptable team of no marks with early 70 OS on both wings. This, simply, should not be happening. Any tips on preventing this would be most welcome. Maybe then I can lay off the ketamine... ;)

I blame Dodo - it's always fucking Dodo's fault. Perm-haired bastard...

So no one out there controlling crosses any better then? Seriously?

I dont want to give the impression im some pro-evo yoda cause Im seriously not, im pretty average at the game, but I can manage a decent cross about 50% of the time.

The trick seems to be tapping the button really really lightly (for a start) and as soon as you see the power bar push away from the direction of the cross on the d-pad (if that makes sense) this seems to make the cross shorter another aspect worth noting is your position, if you cross facing the byline they tend to overshoot a bit, if you angle in toward goal slightly just before they have a much higher success rate. Using those tips I manage a good ratio of decent crosses...

Now getting someone on the end of them and then winning the header thats a different matter entirely :crymore:

Crossing isn't about how long you hold the botton. I'd say 100% of my crosses go in the general area I intended, unless I'm frantically tring to get one off under pressure and hit the wrong DIRECTION. If you've ever read the piggyback PES guides they explain well how it works. Essentially, if you're on the left wing, crossing towards the middle, DON'T hold 'UP' while you cross. If you instead hold either no direction at all, or towards the left (middle of the box) that should work almost every time. It's been like this for god knows how long, since next gen anyway.

Switching players is still horrible, I hope they fix it soon so that if you are holding left whilst pressing LB you change to someone to the left.

They finally managed to fix this for goalkeepers kicking the ball out of their hand (you can now decide the direction) so I live in hope they will fix this soon.

As for the crosses, I tend to double or tripple tap the cross button as I can't stand those give away throw ins.

well well... back in PES2009 my roomie broke his keyboard in half and his computer table got a crack in it as he smashed his table while playing BAL.. This wasn't cause of one particular hit, but multiple during his BAL-career :D

Lucky us he didn't play any other game modes ;)

I was pretty pissed last night... Semi final of mlo open 89th minute the other guy gets a cheap free kick from the left(never should have been a free kick) and the other guy just pressed X to maximum power...I thought I got it covered as I had 5 guys in the box who could have dealt with it, but somehow alll 5 of them just stood there while i was mashing the clear button and the other team scored a tap in

i always feel the goals i give away are fault of my players but something i acually havent done sometimes its clearing the ball and they chip it or passing and it doesnt go to where you want it or goalkeepers who still cant catch a ball and knocking you out of the fa cup (Ivarov) theres just a few things that need freshing up in this game to stop frustration.

Here's a thread I can relate to! I love PES but its the only game in the world that makes me furious enough to break a controller. To date I've broken 6 PS2 Controllers and 2 PS3 controllers. God the expense! I feel gutted just remembering it all.

I felt most gutted after I broke the PS3 controllers as it cost me 40 quid a pop to replace them! Gah!

Still broken controllers or not, I know every October PES comes out I will rush to get it and something will cause me to lose my rag! I might ask that Sony make me a controller from the same material as the black box recorders!

It is happening again
There are 3 things that annoy me on this game:

1. The AI cheating, which i'm prepared for nowadays, because I KNOW it will happen. Doesn't annoy me as much as it used to.

2. People online, especially those who go straight to the biggest teams, and especially those from a certain nation that I won't mention again.

3. The player switching. Sometimes it doesn't want to change, but other times it changes just as you're about to do a slide challenge on someone. Another player in another area of the pitch will end up cropping an opposing player. I've had 2 players sent off online because of this.

I've no problem with crosses, just tap it or what i do nearly all the time though, is press the opposite direction when crossing ,never gets over hit.
I think must people are pressing the direction they are crossing thats why they are getting overhoofed.

OP I completely feel your pain regarding rage, loving PES so much at the moment though feels like the old days. I do feel like a slight mug playing a game with flaws that a blind games tester could spot but hey Ive waited since pes 5 for a decent pes game so the good outweighs the bad. I do find myself sat there sometimes flabbergasted at some of the things konami missed, I have my suspicions that some of the player switching issues are directly implemented to disadvantage the player, part of me has come to this conclusion as a flaw as bad as this seems too illogical(not saying its bad for this reason all the time). I lost a crucial ML game last night and had to fight back tears, thank fuck know-one was there see how pathetic I looked. In my time I have honestly spent over 400 quid on replacing broken pads.

2011 has never made me angry: I always feel like I'm the one who made the mistake, or for some reason can rise above cursor-change irritations.

This is a far cry from last year. PES 2010 made me so furious at times it actually scared me. I remember my anguished screams as my defenders parted like the Red Sea while the opponent's CF jogged into my penalty box, the cursor flicking rapidly through my backtracking midfielders in response to my frantic tapping of L1.

I kicked the table over several times. I seriously considered grinding all of my possessions into dust as well.

I loved a lot about pes 2010, but i hated how the defence cost me to lose loads of games. Pes 2011 is so much more superior over pes 2010. The game plays incredibly well and i can defend great on it, the cursor select is annoying but i can live with it.
