After reading through all of these replies, I'm more confused than ever. :) Actually, I think I understand how it works now. Thanks all for the explanations.

Got another quickie question that I might as well ask here instead of starting a new thread. Which button allows me to take control of my player while the balls in the air on a say a goal kick or corner kick or even on a through ball attempt? My guys always seem to be stuck to the ground when the balls coming at them so I get beat to the ball most often because the AI is moving while I'm just stuck there. Let me make it clear that the control icon is over the player I want to control. It's just that they don't seem to respond to my movement of the analog stick until the ball gets right near them and then it's too late to react to the AI.

Hold R2 to slowly move, or the super cancel (R1+R2) to move quickly. R2 is usually more effective cos he only moves a little bit rather than darting off with the supercancel. Super cancel is best to chase a through ball, or move to catch on the chest.

hhmm i dunno... im guess he was the one responsible for releasing this trashy game so early. I mean obviously Konami have deadlines.. but as head designer or whatever, surely he could have worked on making the AI work, rather than having to cheat you into a 'realistic game'. 50/50's nearly always fall to their team.. youre through on goal, defender comes up behind you and 'jostles' you, THEIR free-kick. Free-kicks given for absolutely nothing. 90% of their free-kicks on 5 star going in or hitting post to rebound to their nearest player. On one season on my ML i didn't conceed one goal that wasn't either a free-kick/ penalty that i could not have avoided. (ie, the computer did the foul for me). A poor shot being parried passed all of my defenders and to the nearest COM attacker, or a header from a cross that it wouldnt allow me possesion of the player to clear despite numerous L1 taps etc.

lol, enough of the usual rant, but you're trusting information from a guy/company that produces a game like this. the notorious lying japs. I wouldn't believe all that i read, if i were you..

Anyways, long story short. have been playing it today and it's more than obvious how to put swerve on the ball. Maybe you should check ya sources.
